pigsticker challenge????

aloha jiggy, just learning about your prey helps alot, were the vitals are an how to get to them with a knife ,what pigs can an cant do,an learning how to handling a wild pig with out the dogs helps,we mostly let the dogs grab them then we go in for the kill, but sometimes you dont have dogs when snaring, bow , gun hunting or having to go in to save your dogs.remember always grab the tail or back legs an hold on for dear life hogs cant reach back to bite you,but be warned they are very very strong, practice in a pen with smaller hogs if you can, swipe the legs an take them down, sit on the pig an dispatch, never approach from the front,or near the head area, they charge, bite, mame, fight or run,you never know what they will do,very strong an dangerous animals, thats why its such a rush to hunt hogs.i like to hunt yearly morning, but at nite is when they are active.i am a 3rd generation hog hunter,i been bit, gored, trampled, attacked,i seen dogs fall like flies,,worst hunt ever maui 25 years ago,3 pits lost there lives to one pig an we didnt ever catch it that day.all we did was pack our dogs out to bury them at home, nasty boar, the next day we went back an killed that hog but 2 dogs were wounded bad ,the dogs lived, we couldnt hunt for awhile all our dogs were dead or hurt..the tusk on my avatar is that boar,an that knife took his life,my brother took 11 stitches to his calf he got gored when he went in to grab a dog that was cut..WE EAT THAT BOAR..

I'd say Scott has the market cornered on custom hog pokers

Thanks Kalama.
It's 13 1/2 inches overall 8 inch cutting edge, 3/16 O-1. I won't hesitate to chop with it. A couple of guys are going to do a passaround in the next couple of weeks before I get to play with it though. I hope after I get it to run over to Richard Js place and we'll put one of his edges on it too.

When I finally get the chance, the top one in the photo will be going with me!!!

It is a Swamp Rat Knife Works "Battle Guard". It's ~14.5" OAL, with a ~9.5" blade of 0.25" thick differentially treated SR-101 (52100) steel.

I have never been on a hog hunt, but if I went, I would use this one. Its my Cold Steel San Mai Trailmaster, I removed the back guard, and made a pretty sturdy sheath for it. This is my go to knife when I want a big bowie. Its pointy and sharp, and is a good chopper.

when thinking of a knife to kill hawgs with
it should be at least 9 or12 long
wide kills better than long. 2 inches wide or better
2 edges don't kill twice better than one they kill 4 times better than one
w 2 edges the kill is always a bigger hole ,quicker ,cleaner and w thrashing and flopping on behalf of the hawg
never stab, insert the knife quickly and acculturate
insert and crank it like pumping water from a water pump
never pull knife out till hawg falls off the blade

This handmade Spanish 'cuchillo de remate' is the one I use at wild hog hunting in Spain.

Forged carbon steel blade, red stag handle and silver steel guard and pommel. Thick leather sheath.
Of course, both edges are razor sharp, as the only use for this knife is strictly dispatching boars - shot or not - caught by dogs, as usual in Spanish 'montería'.
Hope you like it.
Regards.

Both edges on the Pigsticker are laser sharp.

A lot of very nice knives here, I have been playing with this one made from 4130 heat treated to RC54, not the latest picture it now has holes in the handle and could be turned into a spear.

Let me know what you think, will it work ok.

Richard
