Pipe Knives?

I have in my hands a very nice 1977 3dot Case delrin handled pipe knife . Only one I've ever seen for sale...bought on e-bay for 23.50....obviously very rare from the comments from the discussion.

Case Bros. 3dot 1977 pattern 6244 just received one in the mail bought on e-bay for 23.50 delrin handled e-clnt shape

I just received a Case ^244 pattern Delrin handled pipe knife that is in great shape bought off the bay 23.50 had to have it never seen another one.

This would be a cool BF knife, but almost no one would vote for it. So instead of getting a MFR to build a hard to find pattern we'll end up with something you can get in a dozen variations already. (If we ever do another BF knife.)
I know three pipe forums/sub-forums that would be all over buying a traditional pipe knife.

I think it should come with a sturdy main blade of around 2.75" for cutting plug and cake tobacco, an unsharpened blade with a rounded tip, a pick blade...also rounded to protect the briar bowl, and a flat bolster for tamping.

Doc, that's a very beautiful pipe knife!![emoji106][emoji106]

And to add, some very very nice stag on it. Unfortunately, I think pipe smoking is very rapidly become just another one of those things, a victim of the 'new' times. I used to have a couple of old friends that shared my enthusiasm for a pipe, but both Bill and Hoppy are gone now. I'm the only pipe smoker I know of in my circle, and it seems to be a shrinking circle at that.

I guess pipe knives are like the doctors knives now, reminders of a time long gone, when a specialized pocket knife was a tool of the trade for certain folks, because of a hobby or profession.
I disagree. I think it's growing. New tobacco blends, a lot of pipe carvers, etc. Go on Instagram and type #tpc or #iamtpc or #pipesmoking or #tobaccopipe . You'll be amazed at the current popularity.

I have one, very nice, Queen Cutlery Pipe Knife. It is a Doctor's knife that was modified to make it function for knives. It has a spatula blade, which is common on a Dr's, but one edge is sharpened and the sharp edge continues all the way around the curve of the front and stops at the spine. This is the bowl cleaner/reamer. The other implement/tool looks to be the square stock that is sometimes used to make bird gut-hooks for bird knives. The difference is it is straight, thus this is the pick. The Dr. knife has a flat rounded bottom bolster for tamping. It is stainless with cocobolo or rosewood covers. Problem is, its marked proto-type and I've not seen one for sale (other than the one I have).

I know this is a pretty old thread, but I came across this forum while looking up a value for a vintage USA made pipe knife I snagged at a yard sale today.

I haven't hammered out it's value yet, I'm probably going to keep it for my collection of old pipes and pocket knives, but I thought I'd share it since the discussion started on US made knives.

This is a Kaywoodie pipe knife with a pivoting tamper. The tamper pivots up at an angle to cover the tip of the spike, and blade, locking them closed to prevent it from poking you.

Nice find! [emoji106]

AG Russell beat GEC to the punch...

I'd still want one from GEC with a full sized blade in addition to the usual pipe tools.
