Pit Bull mauling and killing in California

Ya, GIVE US SHALL ISSUE CCW IN CA!!!!!!
F***ing Californian politics.

BTW, you answered your own question. EDC a gun if you can.

I'm not going to do the Pitbull debate that will inevitabily happen here.

Stories like this are horrible indeed, and sad.

This is a great example of why no law by any politician is ever going to tell me what I can and cannot carry for self protection.
No man on this planet has that authority.

I have neighbors that raise Pitbulls. They were always running loose. when we would go for a walk, they would come out and growl and bark at us. Scared the crud out of my family.

I am in rural OK and have a concealed carry permit. I refused to stop walking around my home. I took my Glock along, but my main plan was some pepper spray.

We walked our normal route and the dogs came running out. I doused them with pepper spray in the eyes and nose. They whimpered away. From that day on, they would run out barking, but when they figured out who it was, they would turn around and head back a fair distance.

I think pepper spray is a good measure. It is safer and probably more accurate under stress than a firearm. Also it was, at least for me, effective.

Pepper spray will work on dogs, and it's what postal workers use when they encounter aggressive dogs while delivering the mail. They have a kind of spray that is for humans and one for animals.....get the one for animals.

Edit: Also if you are male, dogs have a higher probability of just leaving you alone. Most fatal dog attacks are on women and children.

Really pisses me off when folks let their dogs run loose , especially larger dogs that can actually do damage to someone.

To me , that is the height of irresponsibility.

After two attacks on our Welsh Corgi by two different pit bulls, I have no use for them exept batting or target practice. In one case I had to brain the pit while it was chewing on our dog, and I thank the Lord above my hormbeam staff was strong enough to cave the skull in. The other time I had to inflict some crippling damage to the pit to break off the attack. In both cases the pits were off leash and attacked our dog who was on leash. In both cases the brash young macho idiot who owned the out of control pit was enraged I used a hiking staff on his dog, and left me no choice but to use it on him as well as he threatened to "kill you, you grey bearded old f--k!"

In both cases they were charged with harboring a vicious animal and mistameaner assault on me and my wife. In the first case the pit owner was ordered by the court to pay our emergency vet bills as well as the fine for the assault.

Like I said, I have only two uses for pit bulls these days. After the first attack I made a stouter hormbeam staff I now carry when we walk our corgi, and picked up a heavier blackthorn for when I don't have the staff around.

Did I mention that I really hate pit bulls?

Perfect! Well played sir.

About Pitbulls...

They are great dogs and mine is a loyal friend that just got done with a week holiday where he was cooped up travelling in a Saturn 4 door for 800 miles.

*Needless to say I was mauled badly, he killed babies at rest stops and made disparaging remarks about cats wearing bells.

Here is Stubby being attacked by a great ape. There are more pics but I don't want to offend with the graphic brutality associated with the Pit Bull Terror!

My grandmother told me about that Tiger getting loose in the US, I know they will be re-looking at our lion enclosure in our zoo :/

I like Pit Bulls. I have only known nice ones, with the accompanying good owners. Squirming friendly wannabe lap dogs.

I have had to shoot dogs before and pepper spray a bunch.

One shot from my 9mm stopped a vicious attack from a mastiff that was attacking my amstaff (like a pit bull with better papers) and me.

I have never had to shoot at a pit bull, but I have used pepper spray on three that came after me and my puppy. I use Fox Labs spray and have had very good results.

The pits ran away rolling on the ground yelping like little puppies.
A keeshhouse stopped in its tracks and just stood there for about five seconds (stopped its growling and showing it's teeth), and then ran off real quickly. It runs away when it sees me now.

I have been sprayed before and I can tell you it isn't fun. Just getting it in your legs or arms can be a pain.

Dogs have much more sensitive noses than we do and that is were the OC spray does its worst.

The times I had to shoot attacking dogs were the times when I just forgot to bring my OC spray.

If possible both the gun and OC spray will come out. For dogs I would prefer to have a big long stick (bo-staff), but I ain't Little Bo Peep;)

My dog is just a big couch potato:

As you know, it isn't the pit bulls, it's the pitiful owners that don't raise their dogs responsibly. I will bounce this thread right into Whine & Cheese if it turns into wild-eyed ranting. I've seen enough train wrecks in Practical Tactical when the subject was dog attacks.

If this is going to remain in Wilderness & Survival Skills, it will have to be on the basis of posts like okbohn's. Real facts on how you've dealt with a bad situation. Leave the politics at home. Leave the vulgar language elsewhere.

We are doing all right so far. Let's keep it that way.

I have only one use for Welsh Corgi's and Hornbeam Staffs.

I like to dress up like Gandalf the White and hunt Welsh Corgi's with a terrible pit bull in tow.

;)

Well said Esav!

I'd hoped the thread would FOCUS on practical EDC solutions to bloodthirsty 4 legged encounters...

Pretty sobering! We frequently ride our ATVs/dirt bikes and camp overnight in this area (Calico Mtns just north of Yermo). Shows that you just have to be highly prepared at all times, no matter where you are or what you are doing.

There was also a jogger killed in the outskirts of Palm Springs by a pack of feral dogs, a few years ago. Nobody seems to remember that one.....

The practical edc way to handle any vicious animal attacking you is too cripple or kill it as quick as you can with what you have on hand. For dogs a heavy duty stick is fine. You can use it to crush the skull, or break bones. if the dog is attacking a member of your famly, a heavy blow to the spine will break the dogs back.

Pepper spray is nice, but it is iffy if its a windy day. A stick is always there and does not have an experiation date on it.

Hence the humiliated look in the dog's eyes. . .

It's one thing to be bested by a great ape, but to be defeated by a mediocre monkey? Shameful.

Whatever...have you seen the trouble this monkey has caused, ten times worse than any pitbull. Ban Monkeys that carry guns while walking pitbulls off leashes.
