Pit's Camping Trip !!!

Pit, yet another outstanding thread and pictures. Looks like pristine wilderness there!

How does the fact that it's carbon steel enter in to it? Ferro rods will work with any sharp, hard edge.

Had to slap myself on the head for that one Doc:foot:, I don't know why but I always thought that stainless wouldn't throw sparks !!! I read your post and grabbed my Spyderco Temperance ( VG10 ) sure enough on the thumb ramp it throws a nice shower of sparks.......we live and learn eh !!!:D:thumbup:

Thought I'd add these two pics, the first one is of the hunting store where Pit Jr bought his Opinel and the second one is of the crapper outside....I just thought they looked kinda quirky !!!!

I think it is because most people are thinking traditional flint and steel, in which carbon steel is needed. It is easy to forget that the firesteel is a combination of many things and not "flint." I mean, it feels like you are doing things old school with one :D

Still, there is an advantage to carbon steel, and that is if you find naturally occurring flint while out and about. Then, you will have a piece of steel to strike with it.

Hey pdog, a lot of people have that impression, including me, at one time. We have to correct that impression when we come across it. Could you imagine somebody being stranded with a ferro rod but no knife and doesn't try to use a sharp piece of rock because it isn't high carbon?

BTW, nice sh*tter! :)
