PLAIN, PART, OR FULL SERRATED

Plain is my first choice. But I usually carry both a plain and a fully serrated. I also have the Spyderco Tim Wegner partially serrated and it works real well.

Although I own and have used some partly serrated knives, I find I get the most use out of plain edges. My main carry knives are plainedge. If I were a paramedic, a cop, or such, I would opt for a 50/50 or fully serrated. But for daily use, serrations seem to get in the way mostly. But from the magazines, you'd think most users of modern folders preferred serrations. Interesting. Jim

I like the plain edge also, but I carry a 50/50 out of habit. When I worked unloading trucks and moving bulk in a warehouse, a 50/50 or fully serrated came in handy with zip-ties, rope, plastic straps and such. They hold an edge, and you can always cut them with one quick swipe. Nowdays I carry a 50/50, but the plain edge right up at the belly, so material tends to just slide off the blade whan pressure is applied. I like carrying my ceramic which has a full titanium handle. It's light and I hardly notice it, but it can handle a lot of my plain edge chores.

Either plain or fully serrated. Plain for everyday use, fully serrated for self defense.

Plain edge, better for everyday use plus I like how it looks. But definitely serrated for self defense use.

I carried a half-serrated knife for about a year or so, but it started to annoy me. I found that most of my cutting tasks are more easily done with a plain blade. I think that unless you have a lot of rope or fabric to cut on a regular basis, plain edges are best.

My choice is Plain edge.
Serrated blades are a waste to anyone other than a sailor
Just my opinion don't get disturbed.

I like full serrated for any kind of cutting, a plain edge looks nicer but the only thing it can do better than a serrated blade is sharpen a pencil or peel an apple..
What do all of you cut all day?? Just my thoughts....
Mick

call me old fashioned. I hate serations and I hate tantos. a real knife has a plain edge. If I want a saw or a chisel or a prybar, I'll get one. I would make an exception in a dive tool.

Keep mine plain and simple

,please.
If it was a daily carry, then it would be
50/50. But since the Native will be a part of my collection, I'd like to keep it with a plain edge.
Mick- I cut everything from parachute cord,
to thread, to cutting patterns, to opening
boxes, to destroying gear so no one can use it(for safety reasons),and shaving(face, arms, and foam padding). Anything that calls for it in my work as being a parachute rigger.

Definitely fully serrated. I was skeptical at first but after using/living with a serrated blade, it's definitely the way to go! Like everyone says, it depends on what you're doing. Serrations are great for cutting boxes and plastic ties/straps; they cut better and longer.

My 2 cents,

Bernie

I'm curious... of those of you who prefer plain blades, how do you like them sharpened? (The idea of not finishing the rear was an interesting idea that I never considered before.)

Do most of you like a razor edge or a coarser one? Why?

I used to be a fan of combo edges but now my new buys are either fully serrated (like my new Military to be tested this weekend when I am on the range) or plain.

When condidtions dictate I carry both.

I have a 12in 3side bench stone and all
my knife are razor sharpe. I also stone knives

But I guess it all depends on the job you
use your knife for, Mike

Plain edge all the way. There are certain cutting tasks which can benefit from serrations, but for an all around "use" knife, mine will always be a plain edge.

Well, I must confess I have never owned a serrated blade!! Read so many interesting posts on how alot of you loved serrations. So I went out and bought a Spydie "Q" Hey,$18.00 Yesterday (full serrated) to do my own testing

It was very very shape! I have never been a fan of serrated blades, old school brain patterns.

Well I was very surpised in the way it cut.. Actually skinned an apple excellently, sharpen a pencil no problem. Cardboard boxes, very effective. It just kept on goin.. Now to whittle, that was good except left grooves , but did make for greater control of shavings. Did notice that it will cut you, say on the thumb when peeling an apple! those little teeth BITE!! But, I for sure learned one thing serrations can be your friend. Moral, if it weren't for these forums may have never tried serrations. IMHO,a 60/40 combo may be the optimal carry. This way you could use both edges say for slicing. Did notice that most of the big manufacturers say they sell more combo edges than any other. Is it more costly to add serrations? probably. Also interesting that alot said they would choose serrated for a tactical carry. I find this interesting, is it the intimidation factor or the cutting abilities? HMMM, AIRPORTS? Well thanks to all!!

Well at least Bartman tried it and liked it. Don't get me wrong, I like plain edges very much, but for my money and the length of time that the knife stays sharp, I'll take the serrated.
PR, seems like the serrated would be just what the doctor ordered for your line of work(except for shaving, of course...but I can still shave hair with the back side of my buck crosslock).
Thx for replying.
Mick

Plain edge. Razor sharp. Mostly the things I cut are best with a plain edge. Sometimes I carry a Cold Steel V. Grande, but that would be for self-defense only. And then only as a last ditch. If the Lord had wanted me to fight, he wouldn't have given me legs. :-)
