Ok I know I maybe shoudln't have made a new thread, but anyway here goes.

So i want the BM Mini-Rukus. I'm hopefully going to be able to get a friend to purchase it for me via ebay, as I have no ebay account, and this friend is also in australia, so I could give him the cash and you know the rest. However, it should cost me about 150 - 200 USD. However, I am a student and with a measly 500 aus dollars in my bank account, and still looking for work, I have no income. I just want you all to convince me that purchasing the BM Mini-Rukus will be a wise decision and good investment. I'm donig more and more hiking now that i'm older, and I think if i get this, it will last me a while. Butwhy don't i purchase a RAT 1 or Ka Bar dozier, they seem tough, not as good build quality as the BM.

But seriously I have read all the reviews, it seems awesome, I just want you all to tell me that honestly, spending 200 AUD on a knife is worth it, especially at my age, where money is hard to come by, and I feel like I may regret it. (which i won't), especially as my uni texbooks are gonna absolutley KILL ME, considering I spent 350 bucks on one book today

its kinda like my mind says yes, but my bank account says no (and its lying):D

So please swing me your thoughts and I appreciate all your feedback

For hiking I would just get a cheap mora and save the money. I think it would serve you better than the BM for that task. Or even a less expensive folder would be a better choice. But if it were me and my money I would get a Mora 2000 and a Victorinox OHT, and call it a day.

Honestly? I'd say no. Blowing 2/5th of your bank account on a knife isn't a wise thing to do at your age (which, btw, is similar to mine, I'm actually even younger:D)

What I'd do in your situation, would be to get a job. Fine cutlery is a luxury which poor students like us can't afford. I get all my blades through saving up-I'm still a financial dependent but I like to have a few hundred bucks of emergency cash. I've just saved enough for a new knife, actually.

That said, the price of the MiniRukus is only going to go up. If you have the discipline to keep it unused until you get a job, it's probably as good as the cash. However, if you're anything like me it won't keep its NIB, collectible condition very long. If you want a knife for carry, there's cheaper out there that will serve you just as well. Look around and read reviews-it's in your best interest to get yourself to like something less expensive.

fixed blade is not an option at the moment only a folder
and basically are you saying that for a folder I'm going to use, it wouldn't be a wise choice to get the 615 as it is now more of a collectable, due to it being discontinued and maybe a BM 707 sequel would be a better choice?

Knives don't make good investments plain and simple. The rate of return is just too small. Knives are meant to be used, so if you found a BM mini ruckus, what good is it going to do you locked up in a safe, just to be looked at. I can look at pictures of knives online all day long, and thats free. Get a cheaper folder to use for now, get a job, then get a BM. They will go in price a little, but probably not more than 10% for awhile.

In that case let me recommend a good SAK (30 bucks, tops). You really get an appreciation for those thin, flat ground blades. On the hikes I've been on I've rarely needed more.

Another option is to post a want-to-buy thread in the relevant section of the forum. Ask for a user-they'll be cheaper since there's no more collector's value. You might want to check other knife forums too, there are a couple of FS threads with MiniRukus going for 130-40. (Google benchmade rukus site:knifeforums.com)(Esav and mods, If this is considered deal-spotting I'll take it down)

Lots of tough folders out there. I've heard Cold Steel makes'em tough (most all of them) as well as Spyderco's Manix 2. The Manix 2 especially gets great reviews. Could also look into ZeroTolerance, for which Kershawguy has blems in the Dealers For Sale section. All will run you near 100 bucks, save the Cold Steel which are cheaper.

yeah I'll think about it but what i meant by investment is not a safe queen; a user. I meant by investment in like, i put so much money in this knife, it will do good, I find no vlaue in buying something to put it in a safe to look at it.

OK kinda reached a conclusion, yeah I COULD buy it, but I would pay for it somewhere later, sooo thining of a griptilian 60 bucks plus 30 shipping, will last a good while and I won't need to buy another folder for many years. I am kinda into "use something until it really craps out, not coz i see soemthing cooler" - even though I'm kinda contradicting myself

EDIT: and sorry for all the mind changes
Another edit: Maybe I shoudl just buy a KA Bar dozier instead, stop listening with my eyes and start listening to my wallet?

$90 is easier to swallow, but I would still go cheaper till I got a job. Have you looked at the Buck Vantage line. Quality steels, low prices.

Good choice. Never owned a Grip myself, but by all the reviews it's an excellent piece of knife. I will continue to advocate the SAK though:D

Well even though I don't have a job yet, I have kinda put aside about 100 bucks for spending on something, and really, I am willing to spend this on a higher priced knife, if it will outlast/ or be better than a 30 dollar one

Ok so I've had a big think, and I am thinking either a Ka Bar Dozier Clip point, costing a total of about 40 bucks AUD
OR
a benchmade griptilian Pardue Orange Knife, costing aboubt 98 AUD i think

should I go with the cheaper option, as it will be my very first knife, or should i spend a bit more money and get the BM.

I'm partial to the KB as I've never sharpened before, so I could experiment and get it just right on this before moving up to higher knives
however the BM appeals to me as it seems much better quality, but I wouldn't want to screw it up sharpening it inccorrectly or lose it. Also I guess I'd need a sharpening system then also?

Don't forget/overlook the BM Vex line. Good quality, great price, no regrets.:)

What are you going to be using it for? If a $100 knife will do the same thing as a $40 knife it may be wiser to go with the less expensive option. With this knife you can start to get an idea of what you like in a knife which in turn will shape you purchases down the road. I never really knew what I liked in a knife until I purchased and used a few different ones. At this stage save your money, get a decent knife for now and splurge later on.

Man im not much older than you and ive been in the army the past few years so most of my income is disposable and ive spent it on knives, then i met my fiancee and spent less on knives, and now im getting out right after i deploy and getting married and going back to school and as much as i want new knives i know that its just not a smart thing to do. A knife cant definatley be worth 200 dollars i have knives worth 4 times that but att his point in your life you can do just fine, if your hiking and camping get a mora or a condor rodan and save up eventually youll get yuor rukus and wont have to worry about eating :)

Since you mentioned sharpening, I could not advocate that skill more. Think of it as an upgrade to an entire knife collection.

It does not matter how good the edge retention is on a knife if it cannot be sharpened. Nice diamond sharpeners can be found for $30. I like DMT Diafolds or 4-6" diamond-stones.

That leaves about $60 left over for a good knife.

^And plus one to the Mora/ Condor idea. Tramontina is good as well. Add a Victorinox and you would have a small arsenal. Those three edged tools would only costs about $60...

I have always been one not to mind spending money for quality, but in your situation, you would be crazy to spend a lot of money on a knife. There are a lot of inexpensive options that will get the job done. They certainly won't be as nice, but a high dollar knife is a luxary that you cannot afford right now. Save your money. Only spend the minimum that will get you what you need- not what you want. Later, when you have the disposable income to afford something nicer, then buy what you really want.

Easy choice: Don't buy it!

Ask yourself, do you really need anything more than a generic SAK or something at this point in your life? Better to wait until you have some 'disposable' income to worry about getting into 150-200$ knives!

LOTS of good advice here. +1 on your post WongKI!!:)

what if I was able to get a griptilian AND a cheap knife from a local store, fro 10 - 20 bucks.
This would be keeping my 100 dollar budget, and I COULD spend 10 more.

Of course, the sharpening system would be 30 - 50 dollars and well, I can work that out.

But then if I bought the griptilian, which has a full flat grind, would i need to try and find a cheap knife with a full flat or flat grind?

I have SAKs older than me (I'm 25), get a nice alox farmer and it will be something you can give your kids and have a lot more utility than the Grip. It will do everything the grip will do, and be a lot easier to sharpen. Plus, people don't really notice a SAK, people will notice the grip as you open it.
