PLEASE Help convince me!

So if i did do something like that, how long do you think the 615 would stay around for, in terms of on ebay and such, or from private buyers, and once it went up in price would it reach a price and not go any higher or would it just keep going up and up?

You'll always be able to find them, there not all that rare. And, yes they will hit a ceiling and stay there.

for hiking a vic farmer or hiker paired with a mora is great and only about 40$ for both
vic knives have the BEST fit and finish even better than my customs

Hey, if you don't buy it and buy something cheaper, you'll probably be happy later on. Once you have some income you can spend away. IMO the mini rukus isn't all that great anyway compared to others in its price point.

my $0.02.

i rekon buy the knife that YOU want to own. AUD$200, while a decent chunk of cash, isn't a "ridiculous" amount of money to spend on a quality blade that will last you a lifetime (assuming you don't lose it or have it stolen). if getting the knife that you want means saving up for a couple of months, so be it. save up for a bit.

here's an example:

right now, i'm in the market for a couple of fixed blade outdoors knives. one ~5" and one ~3".

i've settled on a Fallkniven S1 blade blank for the 5" blade. that order will be placed in the next couple of days.

for the 3" blade, i've narrowed it down to two choices. the Fallkniven WM1 and the Fallkniven TK-6. now the TK-6 is almost double the price of a WM1. i want a TK and i'm prepared to save up for a little while before ordering one.

but then again, i'm 36 with a steady job, so saving up ~$300 won't take forever (well, first i need a grand to register my car).

ok, what was it that you didn't like about it?
just insterested in hearing all opinons

Yeah that makes sense, plus I won't go overly hard out on a knife I own, so it WILL last me a long time.

Also, does anyone know how Australian Customs will react to the griptilian or mini rukus. They are both manual, so I assume that there shouldn't be a problem, or should I apply for a permit

EDIT: I just got a job interview

Australian customs are pretty much a law unto themselves and they are well known for their inconsistent rulings.

i would e-mail Customs with links to the exact models you are after and ask them if there will be any problems if they arrive in the mail.

assuming they get back too you, send your original request and their reply to the vendor and ask them to include a print-out of that e-mail exchange inside the package.

or just get the relevant import forms. one Aussie Knife Knut i heard of actually had customs contact him and ask him to stop putting in B107 forms for every blade he ordered (I think that's the form in question) because it was creating too much work for them.

yeah I sent an email, so IF they reply that would be good. Not holding my breath though

Honestly, the one item I always carry in the field is my Leatherman Wave. Cost $50 and I use it waaaaay more often than my $232 zt 0300 or TB Tracker. Not saying either one was a waste of money. Ask any survival expert, infantry soldier or even Special Forces guys what they have in their back pocket and 9 times out of 10 it will be a Leatherman or Gerber multi tool. Watch Survivor man or that idiot on Man vs. Wild (to see what Not to do) almost every episode a multi tool is used. A good hatchet, Leatherman and a hand saw is all you will ever need in a survival/camping kit. You can buy all three for less than $100. I don't think I would ever use a folding knife for camping, but that is just me.

ok so i got an email reply back and this is what they said
Dear JCK
Thank you for your email.
The Benchmade Mini Rukus 615 is considered to be a flick knife or similar device under the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956. Therefore, permission to import this knife is required.
To obtain permission to import, you will first need to contact your local police firearms registry and obtain a written authorisation to possess the items. This authorisation must be in the form of a B709B Form - Importation of Weapons - Police Confirmation.

If you are successful in obtaining a B709B Form, you can then complete the attached B10 Form - Application for Permission to Import Schedule 2 and 3 Weapons form and forward to this office for processing along with your original B709B Form.

Applications for permission to import must be lodged with Customs and Border Protection at least three weeks prior to the expected arrival of the goods.

Please note that all Benchmade knives fitted with the AXIS locking mechanism are considered to be flick knives. There are additional locking mechanisms Benchmade knives fit to their knives that are also considered to meet the definition of a flick knife. If you are considering purchasing additional Benchmade knives, please enquire about these knives prior to importation and we can advise if a permit is required.
Does that means that i have to wait three weeks before i buy the knife, by which then it will be sold out?
Has any members here in australia, gotten one of these in?

Or is this guy just on a power high?
Don't get me wrong I respect customs, but this just not fair :(

I agree with saving up for the knife you want vs. buying a cheap knife now that you will regret. Nothing worse than being stuck with a crap knife that you will never use again when you buy the one you want. Reconsider using it for camping too. Just an old soldier's advice.

Appreciate the advice. I am gonna use it for hiking, so I won't be batoning wood anything like that. but do you say reconsider becuase its a collectors type knife

and does anyone have any advice on the aus customs thing? I'm a bit confused with what to do
i have a new problem, I'm not eighteen yet, wil be soon, but will be too late. Customs said i need to be 18 to get the form and lodge it, and even if I lied to teh epolice, they need photo ID so that would prove me not being 18.

The knives will be available for sometime...be patient.

yeah, but right now is when i have money to spend, in a 2 weeks time, I'm starting uni, and will have nothing :(

Also I'm not allowed to apply for import license form with Aus customs coz I'm not yet 18, so what are my options - shipping it in parts, but then what if i cant put it back together lol

ok so i got an email reply back and this is what they said

that means you should get all the relevant permissions and forms sorted out BEFORE you purchase said knife.

no, they're not on a power trip. they are telling you quite clearly that the knife in question is considered a "flick" knife under Australian law.

now, you can own said knives in Australia with the relevant chunk of paperwork that this would entail. becoming a member of the knife collectors club in Oz would take care of a lot of the hassles.

now, i just looked up the knife in question on knifecentre.com.
there appears to be two versions, an "assisted" opener and an "auto" version.

the Auto version (assuming that means "push a button the blade opens") is illegal in Australia and even if you have the relevant formwork covered to own one, actually carrying it anywhere in public is begging for jail time.

the other version, i'm not sure about. there seems to be some hoo-hah about one-handed action locking folders. yet a Leatherman is still legal to own and carry, so idk.

i would e-mail them back, specifying (and or linking too) exactly the knife you're after. I'd also point out that it's already available off the shelf in Australia.

i would also consider getting said knife from an Australian supplier (and copping the costs on the chin) if it looks like Customs are going to be dipshits.

edit: you're not 18 yet? then FORGET ALL ABOUT IT. no knife supplier in Oz will sell you one of those.

if you get an adult to get it for you, if you get caught carrying it both you and the person who got it for you could be in a LOT of deep crapola.

i don't like Australia's knife laws, but that doesn't mean i'd like to see someone of your tender years get smacked around by the all powerful Department Of Public Prosecutions.

until you are 18, i suggest you either get a SMALL Swiss Army Knife or just continue to save up and buy your beloved benchmade as a present for yourself once you turn 18 (or get Dad to order it for you and give it to you on your birthday).

I would but legear is out of stock, and I can't findy any other retailers in aus that sell them, does anyone else know of any, becuase if I can find them, I will pay that bit more to not have to go through a shitstorm just to get it into my country.

The knife collectors club seems a good idea, especially if it would take care of some of the paperwork.

also sent another email to customs making the points you told made

Also I'm almost 18 in like a weeks time, so i'll be an adult in the eyes of the law soon

true. you'll be 18 and can get tried as an adult and sentenced to an adult prison rather than juvey detention.

however, and please take this in the spirit it's intended, being 18 and getting caught with a knife can still land you in some hot water.

i'm 36 and have no criminal record. i have been warned about carrying a knife by cops in the past. being 36 and with no criminal record, i am much more likely to be able to talk my way out of any potential trouble than you would be at 18. hell, if a copper tried to take my leatherman off him, he'd probably get laughed straight out of court.

the same probably won't apply to an 18 year old.

so, here's a bit of advice i have for you:

avoid, like the plague, any knife that's even vaguely "tactical" looking unless you will only ever carry it on private property.

remember: if you're in public, even if the knife is in it's sheath, wrapped in a t-shirt down the bottom of your bag, a copper can still confiscate it unless you can convince them you have a "legitimate" use for it. it's a lot easier to explain away a SAK or a multitool than a "tacky-cool" blade. i'd avoid black-bladed knives for the same reason. going with something less aggressive looking and more "sheeple" friendly for an EDC blade is, imho, a very, very good idea.

i'd also check with legear that they'd sell it to you once you turn 18 anyways. they have a caveat that some of their gear can only be sold to "authorised" people (eg: cops and customs officers :P ). this may include the benchmade knife of which you are so fond.
