Please make a cf calypso jr or the paramilitary in ZDP-189

Senate, do my eyes deceive me, or does that catalogue page say it is laminated? I may have missed this in this or another thread but are the Delica and CJ going to be laminated ZDP-189? If so what's the 'bread' in the sandwich?

The Delica is laminated with ATS-34. The Calypso is laminated with 420-J2.

Sorry if we missed on the color for some of you.

I think you're doing a darn good job. You can't always please everybody. I think there are more people who like burgundy than who dislike it.

I love it. Cranberry/Burgundy is one of my favorite colors (for anything).

Thanks for doing the Sprint runs and giving us all an oportunity to grab one of these sweet knives.

God Bless,
David

These just keep getting better! I definitely need two of each... Where's the wallet moth smiley?

Re: the colours-who cares? Nobody is buying them because they are burgundy, it's because of the steel. I understand people may have preferences but does it REALLY matter!? :D

So how hard is the "bread" in the laminate sandwiches? The Calypso Jr blade is pretty thin. I would hope not to bend it accidently because the outer layers were too soft or break it because the outer layers were too hard. I would hope for something around 54 to 56 RC.

Intrigued. I thought the reason to laminate a blade was to cover the harder (possibly more brittle) core with a softer (tougher) steel, to combine hardness with toughness. Wouldn't the ATS-34 be overkill for this, and be a little hard ? I would have thought it would be quite difficult to heat treat such a thin blade as the Delica without also HT'ing the ATS-34 to be quite hard ?

Not complaining of course, it's going to the top of my "to get" list
:D

I, like others, am anxiously awaiting the upgraded CJ. I will buy it regardless of the color, but as much as I love burgandy (one of my favorite colors), I prefer colors that blend better with khakis or jeans. I ASSume that most of us clip our knives into our pants pockets and that most of us want it to blend in, not stand out...

Just a thought.

Mark

When you laminate a blade you tune your heat treatment get the desired hardness for the core alloy. Next you test that heat treatment on other alloys to see if they come out with a reasonable toughness level. I guess that a heat treatment for ZDP-189 at 64 RC will yield an ATS-34 hardness of under 60 (hopefully under 58). You are sort of over-tempering or under-hardening the ATS-34 compared to its normal target of about 60 RC.

I see the theory, and understand that ZDP-189 will reach it's optimun hardness before ATS-34 does, but why pick a steel that risks getting too hard in the first place ?
Then again, I have to accept that Spyderco have more access to information and testing than I do :D :D :D

I assume that they used ATS-34 because it gave them the hardness that they wanted for the outer layers when given the ZDP-189 heat treatment. Maybe 440A or 420HC would be too soft.

It's interesting that they are using ATS-34 for one and 420J2 for the other. Does this indicate different price points for each maybe?

My guess would be that it gives them the opportunity to try out two different types of "bread" and get user feedback.

Both variations were available. What better way to find out than to test both?

The answer is obvious: If we end up liking the "meat," then we'll want a steak and not a sandwich. :D

I dont know about a Wireclip, the G-10 would be really nice.
Whilst the wire clip might not look as good as a flat steel clip, but IMHO practically it's significantly better.
Grips the pocket better, doesn't scratch furniture and is more resistant to being bent when caught.

Sal,
Looks like you are going to make us yet another great Calypso Jr. I will get one of these for sure!

Any chance they will be available at Blade? See you there!!
