Update on Beanie Weiner:
We are starting to wean him off the pain meds and steroids, as the vet says he's likely about as good as he's going to get.
We are instructed now to let him walk a little, as he can to build up any lost strength and reverse any atrophy from being cage bound for 5 months. We are also continuing to diet him to relieve back stress as much as possible. Fortunately he has taken a liking to many vegetables which help him feel full without adding much calories at all. His favorite is squash or broccoli. The steroids were preventing much weight loss, so once off of them we are hoping he will lose more weight.
He still isnt back to 100% normal. His left leg seems more messed up than his right, but he has feeling and usage of both.
The last couple of days he has been scratching his right ear with his hind leg, so that is another small improvement.
He can walk, but not normally and prefers not to stand much. although he did stand to pee the other day, which is another good sign and small improvement. When he walks he sometimes will fall over, and his gait is more of a bunny hop than a walk.
Thru it all he has remained his happy self and his only wish is to play ball. We now throw the ball straight to his mouth instead of him chasing it. He doesnt care as long as it's some form of play involving his favorite object in the world.
We are still saving every penny we can for surgery and due to kind donations, the raffle from Auntie and the selling off of the better part of my collection, we have just about saved up half of the needed $5000 for the surgery. I'm trying not to get rid of the things i cannot replace, like my G&L bass guitar and my KZ1000 motorcycle (in parts) and the pieces in my collection that cannot be made again due to the kamis being retired or gone. But if it comes down to choices, bean will get what he needs if its necessary.
I'm praying he never needs the surgery, but am going to have the money handy just in case. I don't want to put myself or the wife to having to beg for help like we did when marbles needed his. I still miss that little boy terribly, as does the wife.
