Please Show Bladeforums Your Support

I thought this thread could use a little bump since it's been a while. Just a reminder about supporting Bladeforums. The benefits you receive:

  • Feeling good about supporting the business that hosts our favorite makers' forums especially since our F5 F5 F5 Fiddleback Fridays probably put the bandwidth costs through the roof.
  • Private Messages
  • Selling knives
  • Avatar
  • Custom signature
AND

  • $5 off your Fiddleback Friday purchases. In this thread Andy says it's for the first, but later clarified it can be used on all knives you purchase (although some of us don't take the discount)

I also think it's cool seeing more folks popping up as Platinum. That'll get you more PMs, Custom Title, Larger Avatar, and even more of a warm fuzzy feeling.

The OP:

Guys, BladeForums is where I learned to make knives, and have run my business from the start. I owe this place a lot. If you do a search here at BF, you can see the entire thing develop and get rolling. Please show your support for the forum by buying a membership. A Gold Membership allows you the freedom to buy, sell and trade. Forums aren't an easy business, and they aren't very lucritive either. The owner here, Spark, has been in charge since I joined, and his forum has nurtured Fiddleback Forge from the seedling stages.

As an incentive for us all to go Gold, I want all folks with a Gold membership or better (even if you've been Gold for years) to take $5 off their next Fiddleback Forge purchase.

And the clarification about the discounts:

This thread is just to clarify the discounts offered at Fiddleback Forge. Please limit your discount taking to one percentage type of discount per knife plus the $5 for the gold membership. The three percentage type (10%) discounts are military and first responder, supporting the dealers, and reviewing a Fiddleback. If you are a gold member, please take $5 from every knife. If you are gold, and a firefighter, then take 10% plus the 5 for gold membership. Please don't take multiple 10% discounts at a time.

This is a minor policy change and is not happening because of or directed at any person, so please don't take it personally if you have done this in the past. Before now, it was not frowned upon, and came up very rarely and that has changed significantly.

Discount type and details:

1. 10 % off total purchase for military service or first responder services.
2. 10% off one knife after purchasing one from a dealer.
3. 10% off one knife after posting a review in another forum.
4. $5 off every knife for Bladeforum memberships of gold or higher.

Thanks for bumping this thread Nathan.

It is important that we support the forum with paid memberships to help pay for the cost of maintaining and improving the website. I personally get way more value out of this forum than the cost of my Gold membership. In fact, I will be upgrading to Platinum on my next renewal because of that.

If someone is brand new to bladeforums or just looking to buy one knife or logging-in only occasionally to learn, I understand starting with a free membership. In my opinion, once someone has moved up to using this forum every week and buying multiple Fiddleback (or other maker's) knives, it should not be an economic hardship for that person to pay a nominal fee for a Gold membership. Regular buyers & users who are reluctant to support the forum financially strike me as cheap and I discount their opinions accordingly.

Here's a wild idea. If Spark adjusted everyone's refresh and reply response times on Fiddleback Fridays according to their level of paid membership, suddenly there would be a lot more interest upgrading membership levels to Pirate or Platinum (albeit for the wrong selfish reasons) in order to get the fastest response times. Don't worry, it won't really happen. This was just a fictional analogy to make the point about some people's motivations.

I encourage everyone to upgrade to a paid membership for the right reasons so that this forum can thrive for years to come.

I have been a free member of bf for some time but didn't spend much time here. That all changed when I bought my first fiddleback last December. In 3 months I've picked up about 10 more and bought a 3 year membership to bf. I don't need the discount, I paid because of the value I get on this forum.

I would recommend anyone participating in this forum who is not a gold member yet to go ahead and join up if you feel you are getting value here.
