Pocket Clip VS No Pocket Clip

STR,
Over how much time are you talking when you say the clips wear the pockets? And what kind of pants?

I mostly wear jeans or Khakis. I never seem to see much wear from the pocket clips. But I buy new pants about every 3 or 4 years. (The old ones become work project pants and wear from clips definitely would not be noticed.) Maybe that's not enough time to see the wear marks from clips.

I wear jeans. You have to realize I make clips, and work on knives so I'm carrying some of everything ever made on my pockets. Some like the Buck Strider knives are incredibly aggressive and abusive to pant pockets. You may as well stick a piece of course sand paper on the clip side and slide it up and down on your pants repeatedly for a bit. That will give you the general idea.

My wife complains to me all the time because of the condition of my right and left pockets from knife carry. All my jeans, and even many of my other more dressy slacks are slightly worn or tattered where I slide my knives. Normally I'd have pics to post to show you but I clean out my computer of all pictures at the end of every year to start again for the new year. All my 06 pics are now on disc and I'm too lazy to dig it up. :D

I have worn spots on all my jeans, where the pocket clip sits. It is no big deal to me.

I do not own but 3 knives without clips a spyderco jester ka bar mule and an aluminum handled sak. None of these are ever carried as primaries. The mule is on tac gear in its pouch. The jester never gets carried and the sak stays in my pack.

Hi All-

Anyone who claims to have lost a decent knife "due to a pocketclip" either didn't use it correctly or the clip wasn't properly adjusted. One should be able to virtually hang upside down from a tree branch without fear of the knife coming loose. The benefits and convenience far outweigh the minor liabilities.

I won't purchase a knife without a clip. I hate to have to reach down into my pocket to get my knife. And if there is any change in my pocket it scratches the heck outa of the knife and coin can wedge in between the blade and liners.

I always carry two knives, so one will be a utility folder with a clip thats resides in right rear pocket. The other is a fixed blade Dozier defensive (or similar) mounted horizontal in front...

So I like the clips for the folder, but prefer a sheath knife for other uses...

I carry larger folding knives on the clip and frankly I like the comfort over a pouch or down in my pocket. Small knives are OK down in the pocket. I have not had any problems with losing a knife due to a clip. I live in the middle of no-where and no one cares what your pants look like.

So I took my B/S and sanded it down with 20 grit. Still good traction but I can get it out of my pocket without the checkering hanging up. Works pretty well with the clip provided, and is easier than a SnG, which hangs up on the blade stop pin.

I'm certainly not backsliding from a S30V to 420H blade, tho.

Until recently, I've never regularly used a clip on any pocket knife. Always felt that a pocket knife belonged in a pocket.

Then, about a week ago I decided to try and use the clip on my BM 14205. I cliped it inside my left, front pocket.

In the last week, I've scratched a bunch of stuff. My kitchen table, several chairs, the trim around both the front and rear house doors. About 30 minutes ago, I scratched the paint on my truck while squeezing out the door while parked in my garage. I just now removed the clip, and the knife is in my pocket.

Anyway, I don't mean JUST to gripe, but I want to ask a two-part question.

To those of you who have carried their knives cliped to BOTH their front and rear pant pockets, I ask:

- Did you scratch less stuff when the knife was in your rear pocket, as compared to the front pocket?

- When clipped inside the rear pocket, does the knife interfer with your ability to sit comfortably?

Thanks................Frank

My bone to pick with pocket clips is when using the knife some of them are brutal to get a grip on the knife the BM Snody 420 is one of them, I had to take the pocket clip off just to make the knife usable.

Really? I have the same knife, and found the clip in the position it's placed IMPROVES the grip for me.
But yeah, the placement of some clips suck. I just don't buy those knives.
I find the clip helps keep the knife in a position where lint doesn't get in it as much. I HATE lint in my knives.
And it keeps them from jiggling around in the pocket.
But hey, different strokes for different folks. It's all good, and keeps the knife market bigger.

I don't carry ANYTHING in my rear pockets(don't like things jammed against my ass when I sit:)).
I haven't scratched anything with the clips though; I just don't bump into things(except with my shins, or my head on low doorways).

Properly designed pocket clips are my preference for carry in my right front pocket on anything with a blade over 2".

The CRK Sebenza has a properly designed pocket clip that can be replaced by an insert if you choose to. The clip is polished on the backside to reduce draw resistance and is quite substantial and stiff.

Yes, a pocket clip wears out your pocket at the edge where you carry it but without one, it wears out the whole pocket in general plus collecting more lint and suffering from the opportunity to either open or collect enough change to wedge it shut.

As a matter of fact, too many folders have aggressive scale designs that may do wonders for wet hand retention but will tear up pants in no time at all. Again, the Sebenza is a refined design with only a blasted surface to wear against your pants.

Pocket clip, anytime. I preffer to carry my knives IWB.
From all pocket clips they make out there, my very favorite is the wireclip Spyderco introduced to some of their models (like the Native III or the Salsa).

I prefer pocket clips. I DO have a couple of knives that do not have pocket clips. I use them when I want to be more discreet.

 on the IWB tactic of carry - Right at the hip, underneath the belt, just next to the belt loop. This helps keep from broadcasting what I am carrying and feels very natural to deploy. I find this works for me carrying a BM 970, Buck Tempest, Sirus or Rush (Read - Looking for a nice used Sebbie). The only time I ever scratched anything was when I had a Tempest clipped IWB and went down on a gravel infested, middle of no-where sweeper turn on my BMW Motorcycle at 35 MPH...I scratched several things - mostly my pride:eek:. The Tempest survived unscathed (I had leathers on top of the jeans). I also will generally carry a utility knife - Leatherman wave or more usually a SAK Trekker in my sport-coat side pocket - no clip. I need both, but will always have one of the one blede floders clipped "IWB".
