Pocket clips; yes or no?

Either I'm in a place where I don't want a clip showing so I take off the clip and throw it in my pocket, or I'm in a place where it doesn't matter, so I take off the clip and throw it in a sheath.

I keep the pocket clips on my knives, but I don't use the clips 80% of the time. Its not because of our "written law" enforcers though, its more because I don't want to stand out, or have someone think that they can just grab the knife from me. I just bought a couple pair of the Tru-spec 24-7 pants that have duel knife pockets, but I just keep a leatherman wave in one off hand. the front pockets are quite deep, and I'm still getting uesd to that. I carry mace though in my off hand front pocket, as I wouldn't go to a knife for most defencive situations. Its all your own preference bro

It seems to me the majority of forum users prefer to use the pocket clips on their folders, Me I don't, I like them in the bottom of my pocket, they feel safe and secure there, I find the clip tends to get in the way when I have my hands in my pockets. Anyway in New Zealand knife crime/violence is on the rise, so an obviously visible clip can tend to attract the unwanted attention of the law. I'd like to here you views,... Kris

Having a visible clip "cuts" both ways. It may attract the attention of LEOs but it may also act as a deterrent to hooligans on the prowl for their next victim. If they see that you have the means to protect yourself, they may think twice and move onto the next guy or gal who may appear to be easier pickings. Having said that - I always use my pocket clip with a small lanyard for quick and easy deployment.

You may want to consider removing the pocket clip but attaching a simple lanyard long enough to snake out of your pocket so you don't have to root around just to get a hold of the knife.

My philosophy is I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Choice is yours.

I sure read a lot of reports of clipped knives being lost. Seems logical to me. Sit or kneel down the folded knife pushes upward, unclipping itself, and falling to the ground. Comments?

It's lanyard-only for me, either carried in pocket and attached to a belt loop, or carried in pack and attached to pack strap.
Sheath carry for heavy multi-tools.

Definetely yes for me, I'm afraid I'd lose the knife when I wear cargo-type pants with larger pocket opening.
Only knife without clip is my trusty SAK.

I use both. At home I carry a tradition folder. At work I use my knife a lot and I need a bigger blade so the clip comes in handy. I only like the deep carry clips. It took awhile for me to get used to having a knife clipped to my pocket, but now I don't think twice about it.

I've had more knives fall out loose in my pocket then clipped to my pocket.

I have recently tried carrying my small Sebenza 21 without a lanyard and without a clip and I really like the slender and sleek feel it has to it. I can carry it in my coin pocket or let it ride in the bottom of my regular pocket. That being said, that is only one folder out of several that I carry without the pocket clip.

All depends on the size of the knife.

Some large folders are just not even an option in the bottom of the pocket, as they fall horizontally and you will feel it all day.

Smaller knives such as my Fallkniven U4 disappears in the pocket just fine.

Yes, and no.
I wouldn't carry a modern knife without a clip, and wouldn't carry a traditional with one.
I carry a clipped locking knife in my right pocket, and a small or medium sized single blade traditional in my left.

I rate pocket clips on folders just a tiny bit behind thumbstuds [or any other mechanism allowing one hand opening] Like stirrups on saddles ,clips seem like a simple improvement, but both are revolutionary.

I do not use pocket clips for a few reasons, the do have the potential to attract the attention of LEO's and others who maybe "knife shy", when you get the phrase, "what the hell is that and why do you need it!!". Also they have a tendency to scratch things you may brush up against, cars and other vehicles, furniture, people, etc.. One more reason, if that clip grabs something it may pop out of your pocket and may get lost. As for "printing", smaller folding knives like a Strider PT do not show a knife print at all. Just my opinion though.

I like the clip. Makes the knife easier to access and it won't get scratched up by the stuff in the bottom of my pocket.

I like clips, but I also carry a Vic Farmer everyday in the bottom of my pocket. It depends on the knife, I guess. On "two handed" knives, I don't like clips. On one handed knives, I prefer clips.

If it's a smaller thin knife I take the clip off and use a small lanyard to grab it with, normally the style I carry at work. Otherwise I use a clip for everything else.

I do not use the clips on knives I take to the office. I removed it from my mini Griptilian and much prefer the feel of that knife without the clip. The other knives I take to the office are all traditional folders without clips. The knives I take in the field, hunting, camping or hiking, keep their clips and I use them. That would be my Doug Ritter full sized Griptilian and/or my zip tied Delica.

Depends for me on which pants I have on as well as what knife it is. For example on my cargo pants and my jeans I use the clip on my dress pants I just drop it into my pocket because I don't want to ruin the pants. As for the knife part is if the knife is too thin I like to have the clip to grip when I close the blade so I know I won't close it on my fingers but for blades that are either longer or wider I prefer to not have the clip. So usually I end up having my griptillian in my cargos and my large traditional in my dress pants
