Pocket clips; yes or no?

I carry a mix of traditionals and one handed openers. For the larger modern knives I do use the clip. For my small Sebenza and Mnandi they just get dropped in my pocket with my keys. The main reason is that in my office environment it is not good to advertise having a clipped on knife.

I'm generally not a fan, because there are very few that design a clip with ergonomics in mind, IMO. There are a few exceptions, such as the HTM M390 gun hammer, and a nifty pop-out integral clip that is a spring-loaded part of the frame, but as a lefty, by and large, I remove them from my knives. That being said, I use the clip on that M390 Gunny on a regular basis.

For larger tactical folders I prefer a pocket clip, without a clip I wouldn't be able to comfortably carry a knife that size in my pocket. As long as the knife has a good "handle to clip size ratio" I have never had a problem with the clip getting in the way or the knife coming unclipped. I also prefer knives with low ride clips that put more of the knife in your pocket. I only have one knife with a pocket clip that I wont clip in my pocket, the CSAR Buck, but that has nothing to do with the clip and everything to do with the thickness and weight of the knife. Fortunately it comes with a really nice molle case. That being said, when ever I am in the woods or in a situation where it might come unclipped I take the extra precaution of clipping the knife under the pocket flap on my cargo pants. I am also a fan of 5.11 and truspec pants because they offer dedicated pockets to clip your knife in. These pockets offer good retention and also keep the knife from coming unclipped when you are digging in your pockets for lose change. Smaller traditionals get dropped in the pocket, they are small enough not to bother me if they move around. I usually use a dangler clip to keep my SAK from flopping around. I have yet to find a multitool that clips or rides well in any pocket, the smaller ones are too small for me and there is no way my SOG is going in my pocket that thing is a brick. Well there is my two cents on pocket clips.
