New to traditionals and enjoy carrying them but don't like the horizontal lump at the bottom of my pocket. I've seen some sheaths but don't know if they will make a difference. Do they? Recommendations? Seen some sheaths to keep knives vertical in a pocket but can't seem to find one to buy -if they would even work. What's the best way to carry a traditional knife?
Thanks

My KSF pocket sheath just came in the mail today. If you don't want to go the custom route, it seems pretty nice for $20 and so far fits all 3 of my traditional knives. Not alot of knife experience there but I'm happy with them.

Thanks. Seem to get pretty good reviews from most.

As csisland mentioned KnivesShipFree has a selection of pocket sheathes. A.G Russell and oldhundered collectibles also have some pocket pouches and sheaths in a few sizes.

I've used various leather pouches and sheaths and as long as the leather is a little grippy, my knives stay upright in the pocket. You can also wad up a bandanna and stuff it in your pocket next to a knife or sheath, that seems to help keep them vertical. That's a trick from one of our own, Jackknife.

There have been numerous threads on the subject in this subforum too. If you're up to doing some searching you might find some more info.

Thanks. I will do some searching and try those tricks.

I find most pocket sheaths tend to add more bulk than I'd prefer, while slim sleeves (thin leather, or even chamois or the like) can easily achieve the desired effect.

I was just going to mention this. A slim leather sleeve, either of suede or with the slicker side in, can provide enough friction to make just the right kind of difference in keeping a knife upright in one's pocket.

Most of my knives ride nekkid, but I've stitched some rudimentary sleeves from scrap leather for a couple of the longer ones. The older GEC sleeve does decently, too (no idea about the new ones), once I scuffed the back a little to create more friction.

William Henry makes/made alot of pocket sheaths with clips on them. Some use/used a tip up design with a pigtail lanyard. Others use/used the tip down configuration with no lanyard. I don't know if they will sell a sheath as a seperate item, but it doesn't hurt to ask. I have also seen the sheaths for sale on the bay as loose items. PM me for email photos.

Get a front pocket wallet, then carry your knife vertically next to it in the same pocket. This is how I carry every knife I own and it works perfectly. If you wear really loose fitting pants, there is a chance the knife will fall back behind the wallet and turn into that "horizontal lump" but I live and work in Levis 501s and have zero issue.

Thanks for the ideas and pics. Definitely going to check out the William Henry sheaths.

I carry a leather wallet in my back left pocket. My traditional folders ride vertically beside the wallet without a sheath. The only time they ever fall to the bottom of the pocket is when I take out the wallet. When that happens I rearrange the knife when I put the wallet back. This works well for all but the smaller pocket knives, which I don't usually carry.

I have a larger Case Back Pocket Knife and a KSF pocket sheath for it. I sometimes carry it by itself in my right back pocket alone. It works fine that way too, but it also works sheathless beside the wallet (which is exactly how Tony Bose envisioned it would be carried).

Leather Glove fingers is an excellent idea. Jon_sliders home-made leather slips are great. As light and slim as you're going to get. A glove finger would be very close to this.

That is a great idea. Might try that first. See how I like a sheath.

Here are a few I made
The knot at the end of the cord sits outside the pocket, keeping the pouch vertical:

And a few little ones:

If you have a Tandy Leather in your area, they sell scraps by weight. The real thin veggie tanned leather is pretty easy to stitch.

The 'free knife' is a Rough Rider Dogbone Jack. I got one for $10. Not bad for the price, and came with the sheath and a little whistle.

Say, I really like that one. Great idea with the knotted cord and its placement (the higher 'back' on the sleeve), and clean execution.

Agree completely. Great idea to keep the sheath vertical. Thanks.

You can also experiment with a longer cord that loops through a belt loop. It works, but is a little more visible.

I use a rubber band as a wallet, basically credit cards/etc with my money warpped around it and than my knife on top of it with a rubber band wrapped around it all. The rubber has enough grip to make sure everything stays secure and doesn't move around, combine that with the length/width of the cards once you drop it in your pocket it stays there very securely.
