IMO the Survive GSO knives are the best out there in "super steel" category knives.
But also there are many fine makers doing models in 1095, 1084, and other carbon steels and for me these will also do the job.

Really it is just a matter of trying some out and finding your own preferences.

+1, Survive GSO series from 3.5 to 10" offerings and many in between.

Another tip....you are not going to get any ideas from your poll from peopleh answering "other." All you will get is the preference among the list you provided. So Im a bit confused. Why not have a "open response" thread where you ask "Whats your favorite survival knife?"

Mines "other," BTW.

..yep..

Maybe if you told us what a "survival knife" is (other than an empty, meaningless marketing term), you would get more answers. Just a suggestion.

Marcinek, thanks for your suggestion. This is what I mean...A knife that is ideal for wilderness and outdoors. A versatile, durable knife that can be used for cutting, digging, splitting, and defense.

I have a Survive GSO 5 that I would feel quite comfortable with in any situation

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

Ha, that's what I was looking for.

It is a tough question, and my gut said Mora. If cost was no issue though and we get to live in a fantasy land...

Personally Esee 4 is what I would say was the best... just an opinion though. large enough to do what you need it to small enough to be easily controllable and practice fine cutting skills. good quality and affordable (to most) I am not high income and consider it worth the investment. ps it can be found for about 90$ shipped.

Ah. A outdoors recreation knife. Well...since I can use a knife to make tools for digging and for splitting (though all the woods I have been in seem to have both large and small branches available), and since I'm not sure what "defense" is involved while camping, I'm going to stick with my original "other." (Alox Vic Farmer)

What wouldn't be on my "best survival knife" list of any year (but are on your list) would be a Gerber product (Bear Grylls sucker bait nonsense) or a Medford (insanely overpriced). Or anything with "survival" in its name. Except for the old Jet Pilot Survival. That came out when "survival" actually meant survival and not camping! :)

..but the Gerber Bear Grylls has a USB port for your laptop to tell the heicopter where to drop the evian and california rolls...:D

Thanks! The Medford is really a specialty knife thats not for everyone. I appreciate you responding back.

I suppose not everybody is willing to dish out 400 bucks for a 4 inch bladed D2/S35VN/CPM3V (not sure which) drop point with micarta scales and a kydex sheath like the NAV-H! :D For that kinda money, as a "survival" knife, it should have a satellite phone built in and a sheath made of beef jerky!

I picked other. For those on a budget, any Mora. Retro, the Jet Pilot knife as made by Marble's, Camillis, Ontario. The one that goes with me everywhere lately is Randall's Fireman Special.

Probably my modded Kershaw Tension pocket clip folder and a CS Trail Master to back it up,
although a modded CS GI Tanto could be the big blade.

Hey everyone, I have been doing a little research about the best survival knives. I know there is a lot of different opinion about these, but I wanted to make my own list for 2014 and get some feedback from the rest. I mixed in some the “every day” knives along with some of the pricier ones.

1. Ontario ASEK-Aircrew TM Survival Knife
2. Ka-Bar USMC Utility Knife
3. SOG Seal Team
4. KA-BAR Becker BK2 Companion Fixed Blade Knife
5. Gerber 22-01626 LMF II Green Infantry Knife and Nylon Sheath
6. Cold Steel SRK Kraton Handle Concealex Sheath (Survival Rescue Knife)
7. Buck 119BR Special Fixed Blade Knife
8. Gerber Bear Grylls Scout
9. Medford Knife and Tool NAV-H
10. Other: Please suggest a knife, the suggested knife that is most common will be considered

You must be new to the knife world.

Well since it's a question about a knife I wouldn't consider the other section getting the most votes a fail, but simply the expected outcome. Most times you ask about one specific knife, people will kinda ignore it and just talk about what knife they like instead.
