I'm looking at the Saber grind as being the Thicker of the two with the flat grind not having the thicker upper part of the blade and being swept down into a thinner more slicing edge

Just so people know what you are talking about:

edges_02_2D11_2D07.jpg

- The Sabre Grind

The sabre grind is a strong edge format. The bevel starts around the middle of the blade, and proceeds flatly towards the edge. This leaves a strong edge for chopping and other hard use. But it also means the edge will be fairly thick, so this design will not necessarily slice all that well.

The sabre grind is found on many military classic designs such as the Randall #1 and the kabar.

- The Flat Grind

The flat grind endeavors to provide an edge that is both thin and strong, and leaves a strong thick spine. The grind is completely flat, going from the spine to the edge. This grind is harder to make, because a lot of steel needs to be ground away. However, the edge ends up being fairly thin and so cutting very well. Because the bevels are flat, there is plenty of metal backing the edge, so it's much stronger than a hollow grind. It is not as strong as a sabre grind, but will outcut that grind.

The edge on this design also penetrates better for slicing and chopping. The hollow grind expands non-linearly as you go up the blade, the sabre grind expands linearly but very quickly. The flat grind expands linearly and slowly. Kitchen knives are usually flat ground, because when chopping/slicing food you need to push the blade all the way through the food. This grind is an outstanding compromise between strength and cutting ability, sacrificing little for either.

It depends on the thickness. If it's .32, like my HOG ASH, then flat is fine. If it's skinny, then perhaps I'd prefer saber ground. I already have a fairly thin flat Ground SFNO. It would be nice to have the newer version be more heavy duty, to complement what I already have.

Nice summary Robstar.

+1 on flat. The Sabre is "pretty" but for me the flat is more functional for a general camp knife.

HOGS want Both options on the order form, If you have a possible 10 color combinations availible and a HOG wants one of each he orders ten knives. Add both blade options and now he has to order 20 knives to have a complete set!:eek:

This is an all around midsized blade. I would be using it as a main fixed blade for camping hunting etc. Full flat grind makes for better slicing, Saber stronger, and saber ground blades tend to have thicker points on them than the same thickness blade profile in full height grind.

So I voted saber just for the extra strength.

Having used both I like the weight and balance of the Sabre grind. I would prefer sabre but will take whatever Jerry throws at us. I figure most will be flat since thats what I have seen people bring back from the shows.

I'm a full grind sorta guy, I like my knives to slice well so that's what I voted for.
HOWEVER
I'd take whatever!

The sabre grind on the SFNO's from a few years ago had pretty thin edges.

I agree with Evolute on it depending. Take a look the FSH and HOFSH. The FSH was 0.25" with a sabre grind and the HOFSH was 0.32" with a full flat grind. They were ground at the same angle.

I had and sold a saber ground SFNO and that's what I want (only with mag tiger canvass or green linen scales and a crinkle coat this time :) ).

no to the sfno.

nO NO

if one is made

make em fat please. Like a nuclear meltdown SFNO .270 fully convexed

THat makes it different and wouldnt necessarily be against protocol.

but I still vote no.

This will diminish price IMO.

How are all of ya that paid inflated prices gonna feel now??

Bring on the muk. THese are old news.

been there ...done that

I do like the idea of the Mini Muk, I think the SFNO wont be up long. I mean its already been up once, and the way Jerry is bringin it I wouldnt think it would be up very long and then the MINI MUK is sposed to be at Blade west.

I would LOVE to see the MUK! and get it shipped in time for hunting season, it looks like it would make a decent skinner.

They don't diminish the price for people who read that the Fusion series would be rotated. It used to be a sticky, but now it's gone.
