That bottom sheath is AWESOME Dwayne !!!

I've never seen that one before.

Thanks! I really liked making that one, the customer wanted a quick draw sheath that would positively lock in place when the strap was engaged yet be very quick to draw on release. Thats why theres a longer than normal nub on the bottom.

For all y'all that wondered what the kydex/fusion looks like from the inside, well, here ya go. Nuttun speshul. :p First one on the left is obviously unfinished to show the insides, middle one has been out in the boonies a lot, that thing has been through a lot, the black one is getting stitched up right now, but it shows the layers well.

up closer, you can really see all the layers in there.

Many many thanks for all the PM's and e-mails, I am very proud to be an official HOG and on the list of Busse Combat Sheathmakers. :)

Dang, busted, :o

scuttling off to my shop now..... :p

I had a reply typed out for this days ago, but BF locked up and i lost it. My points then have been addressed already but I figured I'd weigh in on what Dwayne said.

I have to agree that most things have been done in sheath work and there's not much new under the sun. Occasionally we discover the same things in different ways. For instance, I've done exposed spine Kydex before out of the need to get an odd shaped blade quickly released. It was purely a spur of the moment thing. David has done it under a different set of circumstances, trying to make a faster draw on a large blade. Either way, like Dwayne said, it's all been done before and it will all be done again.

As for the "spam" thing. I know I'm not a regular on this forum, but I do browse here often and see sheathmakers and customizers post there work a lot here. It's always in good taste and seems to go with the atmosphere and fellowship that's been developed here. I have my own forum on BF, but I still tend to post for input in WS&S, because that's where I feel most comfortable. Those are the guys whose input I respect the most, and I feel that's the way it is for makers here too.

As for the original post. You do fantastic work. My suggestion would be the keeper strap on large blades, though I might actually prefer the magnets for a smaller blade.

Sounds like you hit the nail right on the head kiahs. :)

I did notice the "proprietary" comment and didnt get a chance to respond to that one, I have shared nearly everything that I consider my intellectual property. Techniques, patterns, styles, etc etc. I consider it a great compliment to have other makers use something that I designed or popularized. Most of my leather crafter friends are very open to teaching their methods and techniques and never forbid someone from using something that they might consider unique to them. Though, it is good form to ask if its ok to use certain designs, or at least give credit for the inspiration.

I wish rawhide had not taken his ball and gone home on this thread, this could have been a very productive discussion. :(

shhhh, dont let skunk know I snuck out of the shop again.... ;)

I understand that kydex infused with leather sheaths have been around for a while and all but I also think that the way Richard is doing it is unique in that the kydex is used for retention of the knife. The sheaths that Dwayne shows arent that way they just have kydex sandwiched between leather.
The leatherdex sheath works just like a handle retention kydex sheath but it is also leather which I think is a great and original design.

Also when Richard spoke of his "New Concept" sheath, he probably meant it was a new to his line of sheaths not to the sheath world in general. And he may not have took his ball and went home if he was spoke to a little nicer also. I think there is room here for him and his sheaths and I hope he does hang around and keeps offering his sheaths to us because I think they are a great compliment to a great knife.

Just my early morning opinion.......

I have a leather sheath with magnets for my Active Duty. Holds it in quite nicely.

As somebody said though, you don't want your credit cards or some electronic devices or even some watches getting too close to it.

And he may not have took his ball and went home if he was spoke to a little nicer also.

The only people that were not "nice" to Rawhide were steelnut and maybe me for saying "I think being part of this community, a community welcome to new members, is to contribute more than a product you want to sell". When steelnut apologized, he received a less than gracious acceptance of the apology.

Rawhide,

I wanted to take a second to appologize for calling your thread here SPAM,
when I saw that you had never posted anything here but what you were selling...

As Leatherman said, Brotherhood and excitement about the knives is what this place is about.
You may not be excited about the knives, but maybe it will set in.

The Brotherhood part is what I though I was defending....

Scott - Big of you to offer an apology and of course it is fully accepted. My ego isn't as fragile as some folks'.

When leatherman had a nice post (#49) to Rawhide, Rawhide has an aggressive response to him (#55). They are too long to quote here, but I think are worth reading/rereading.

I think the real reason he "took his ball and went home" is when Rawhide posted this

In my defense, I do realize that Kydex has been used on both the inside and outside of sheaths for a while but if you have seen a Kydex "sandwich sheath" like I posted l would surely love to see a photo of it because I certainly haven't. If you do I will remove them from my website altogether.

leatherman posted this

I am on the run this morning but I can provide you with all the pics you want of kydex sandwiched between leather on a sheath.

and then Rawhide left with his ball before leatherman could post pictures.

Steelnut nailed it early on, show me the knife love. At least get to know the crowd here before you start introducing your products. It's just about being polite.

From what i've seen on this forum while some people do make a living from sheaths they are also collect the knives that go in them. It's a symbiotic relationship not a parasitic one.

If this hadn't been called I don't know what would have been next, any sort of knife related product could be 'spammed'. Sharpening systems, stones, strops the works.

Look at 308sniper's example. He genuinely likes knives and has a great product for them. No one has questioned his motives because he did it the right way.

Rawhide Leather mentioned his age and that his:
'days of getting excited enough about material things to want to gush about them to others are pretty much over. Also, it has never been my style to do so - that's just me.'

While he may not gush about things he did seem to get pretty touchy when a few more experienced guys asked some probing questions. Maybe it is better that he takes his ball and goes home for now. I don't mean for good but at least until he cools down and sees how he could've gone wrong here.

With more and more people joining here this stuff could really hurt the forum so for me it's good that we have people who are prepared to ask questions and take stands. Just my opinion on this.

Well said Kiahs:thumbup:

Richard, you are welcome here anytime!!!
You don't need severall Busse's to participate in this room. Please just ignore the people here that whine. Every room has a few, but most people here are good.

I don't think anyone will argue with you. My point from my original post, I think, is still valid.

He was wanting input from Hogs, not just pushing his product. I take a man for his word and thats all I know to do.

He's not buying knives one day to flip the next like some are doing. And there not catching any heat, why should Richard.

PM incoming with some info.

Pretty civil thread here for drunk Hogs! Anyways, Richard, come back around, the discussion is fruitful and your sheaths contribute to the variety available to all of us for Busse knives--a GOOD THING :thumbup:. Leatherman is one of the good guys, so I'm sure he means no harm. He's the kind of guy who'll go out of his way to help. I'm also sure there's room here for both of you, and you DO have different styles. Having seen many of Richard's sheaths, he has developed a unique aesthetic that is different from what else is out there. Keep on keepin' on, Richard, you'll settle in here soon enough, and more variety for Busse sheaths is always nice.

What does knife flipping have to do with this thread?
If the Boss had a problem with people re-selling his product,
I am sure he would of said something about it long before now

In fact the only mention of it I have ever heard Him make was in the SFNO LE thread:

"So, PLEASE behave like HOGs and be true to the battle cry that has made generations of BLADE Show attendees cringe in fear. . . . NO REGRETS!!!!. . . No hugging. . . No holding back so that others may score. . . No complaining that someone is selling them for a profit. . . Just be all the HOG that you can be, and remember that HOGs eat their own"

I don't personally care if some of you whiners on the subject form up for a group hug every now and again,
But I certainly would not post about it here:cool::cool:

Buuuuuuuut IIIIIIIIIIII, dont whiiiiiiiiine! I never whiiiiiiiiiiiiiine! Your a meaaaaaaaaaaaanie! :grumpy:;)

There's some great stuff here since last night, well said y'all! :D

Rawhide's style is unique, and I like that! Its not totally unique, a similar sheath was posted by Last visible canary a long time ago using layers of kydex and kevlar. The technique is the same, the materials are different.

Dont forget Martin over the pond, he does the sandwiched leather and kydex molded and the retention is on the sheath. Been doing them for more than a year now. Its not a new thing, its just the craftsmen that did them earlier deserve credit for the inspiration.

Balislinger, your right! We are a very civil group of drunks! Amazing isnt it? You ought to see them around the fountain at Blade, its downright scary. Milling around like a buch of sheep with the sheepdog Amy bouncing around them....... :p
