Early in 2017 I was able to choose from several 48's available from multiple dealers. This one was my first GEC. Sadly it has been rotated out, but more followed!
I probably bought my first GEC before 2010. And my last around 2015. I think I have four currently. I don’t pay any attention to them any longer. The purchasing routine along with lack of stainless steel has made them a no go for me.
Like many others it was 08/09 and was a 25 in orange jigged bone from Collectorknives. The old website where Mike had the yellow PayPal buy it now link next to every knife. Dozens of GECs and S&M to scroll through that were all available for long periods of time. I think I remember buying a red bone Washington jack from Mike too after mulling it over between that and an ebony possibly for several days; until finally making up my mind.
I bought one in the early days from SMKW in person on a trip to TN. It was February 2009, I recall that they had plenty to choose from though not many patterns then. It was a #73 in grizzly bear bone, wish I would have kept it, but I let it go here within a week of getting it for $75 , I didn’t like the nail breaker springs, coupled with half stops, it would send a shock down my finger when opening, a great knife otherwise, I it had a slight bit of side to side play, but gorgeous bone and the rest of the fit and finish was wonderful.
Realized I voted but never said exactly when. for me the steel bug bit around 2014, I had graduated college in 2013 and got a job by 2014 due to the tail end of the recession. Frenzy really hit towards maybe september 2014 give or take a month or two.
