POLL- Who thinks BM has below par QC?

I have had good luck with BM lately. I think they were in a lull, but have worked through it. Their new stuff is fantastic.

I have talked about this very subject here and at BM's forum.
Needless to say, Travis didn't answer my questions, and I believe he deleted the thread from the forum.
If you do a search here, you'll find it in the archives. Pretty interesting replies in the thread.

General, as for you being banned at BM's forum, and their refusal to answer your mail, does it REALLY suprise you?

I have four BMs, all bought over the net, all perfect. I think they make a premium knife at a corresponding price.

I do not worry if a knife does not come sharp, I sharpen them all. I also do not worry about pricing, I buy the knife I want at the lowest price I can find when I decide to buy it.

Once in a while I buy a knife that I view as overpriced, I chalk this up to demand, not to a pricing policy. I respect the right of a respected, well known company that makes good quality product to set prices as they see fit.

Many complain about the prices of Sebenzas and BM knives, the demand is there, but let the quality go down for very long and they are GONE. A name can not sustain you these days...not for long.

I buy Benchmades because I think the Axis lock is by far the greatest thing going. I have a hard time convincing myself to look at knives with lesser locks. That said, if I knew that BM was intentionally ignoring me, I wouldn't buy their stuff anymore. I just wouldn't.

, about the price fixing
rolleyes.gif
, as I said, I AM NOT GOING THERE. I could talk about it, but I won't. The ONLY reason I even brought it up was as so many people were mentioning it to me in private and I wanted to make clear I would NOT be talking about that.

This 'vendetta' thing is getting boreing. I did once state I had an axe to grind with BM, and yes I do. My problem with them is qc and to a lesser degree the way they ignore a paying customer. I have accepted that they can and do ignore me and there is not a damn thing I can do about it, so I have let that matter go, I only mention it to show others what they do. Yes I could refuse to buy another BM product, but why blame the product, when its the company at fault? You have to admit they do make rather good knives when they are WELL MADE. I can accept, being ignored over my opinions as that is the RIGHT of the company. However, if I have a problem with one of my BM knives and they refuse to fullfil their LEGAL responsability (assuming that they STILL refuse to talk to me) be assured I will raise a level of **** that even the Devil did not get from God for messing with Adam and Eve...

I have been VERY careful to avoid a duff model for a number of obvious reasons, one of which is my concern that BM would refuse to do what they are expected with a faulty knife under guarantee. Perhaps I am being unfair to expect them to be that spiteful?

I don't want any fellow formite to be in my shoes and get stiffed.

On the issue of a ban at BM Forum LOL! I supose you have a point my friend! Not a good thing to THANK them for fixing a knife and then later on happen to mention that you are still having problems, bad for business the truth. One thing I would like to say is I have had quite a few e-mails regarding the policy of BM to delete posts and ban at the slightest whim, so no, I am not surprised now...

Wayne,
Why even bring up this horse**** again???

We went all through it a few weeks ago. You say you have to do a 'massive search' to find a good one. I have to do a "MASSIVE SEARCH" to find a bad one.

Get a life, let it go. Some feel the way I do. Some feel the way you do. Many fall somewhere in between. IMVHO this stupid *** discussion is ridiculous. What purpose is it serving?????????

Let it go Wayne, seek professional help for your BM fixation.......
smile.gif
biggrin.gif

I got 5 new ones since I talked w/ you last: 690 - 942 - 450 BC1 - 145HS - 770 BC1.

I did not have to search for good ones...
They were all good... some better than others ....but all good. Good enough to even satisify me. And like I told you I AM VERY PICKY.
smile.gif

Wayne, I also told you if you will find out what kind of laws affect shipping a knife from the US to the UK; if it is legal I will pick out and ship you your BM,s.
Then you will never be dissapointed again, because they will all be as perfect as the ones I get for myself...
smile.gif
Then you can enjoy your new BM's w/o your blood pressure going so high you are in danger of having a stroke.
eek.gif

Think about it, I was serious when I told you that......... I am not a dealer, but I can probably get you what you want and you will be happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
smile.gif

If you would, send me a private email about the' "price fixing" whatever it is.' Just for my own info I'd like to know about this discussion and I can't find anything on it.(probably still don't know how to do a 'proper' search yet..
frown.gif
.. oh well)

Have a good one Wayne and let me hear from you................

Just a quick thought, perhaps I am seeing much older stock in the UK than you lot? After all, most B&M shops over here, see BM as the 'top of the range' models. The prices are certainly out of the reach of normal people. You can expect to pay $200 for a BM 750 for example. In the UK, as a rule a knife is not seen as a tool worth spending that kind of money on. Thus, perhaps the stock is a year or more old and I am seeing the 'bad' stuff? Perhaps BM HAVE made things better? Hey who knows? I will watch the situation with interest.

If ANYONE has a bad experience with BM or a GOOD one, drop me a line or post it up. Or if any of you want to publicly post up, what you said in private, feel free to do so. I will not post up private e-mails. NO WAY. I might not be as diplomatic as some, but many agree I have a point here. As long as that is the case, I am on the case of ANY company that takes the qc issue as a joke.

My personal experience with BM has been a perfect 12 for 12. Not one of the knives I purchased has been flawed. I also think the Axis lock sets the standard for folders in the new millennium.
What I am asking here is for everybody to keep in a positive mode in their comments. If you disagree with Wayne, as I do, then post it! Please do not let this turn into a mud slinging match or personality war. The first rule of conduct on Bladeforums is to BE NICE. Take the name calling and mud slinging to Whine + Cheese. That's what it is there for.
Thanks,
David

I've had no problems with my only BM, a Mini-AFCK. Several of my friends have aquired their own subsequent to handling it, in fact. That said, would it surprize me to learn that a few sub-par one's slip out? No. But like someone already said: It happens with everyone.

Upgrading to semi and custom knives usually eliminates QC slippage to a large extent. You get what you pay for, as we all know. Even then, it wouldn't surprize me to learn of a few that get by.

Not that I would mind BM improving their quality
wink.gif
However one's gotta be honest and fair. Said that hereby I declare that I own 14 BM folders and all of them are Axis lock.
After reading this thread I've examined very carefully all of them regarding the offcentered blades and honestly I have detected nothing significant. Apparently using very precise instruments probably I could've measured.
My biggest QC complaint so far was the spacer on 710s. Doesn't really matches the liners perfectly. I won't mention the edges and sharpening job, as I don't really care about that one, either way my trusty Edge Pro does it
wink.gif

P.S. General, as of the legend about MT hiring BM employee to sharpen thei knives,
As microholics say Tony sharpens all of the blades himself, strange that he did that anyways...

Fair point David. Sometimes we all get upset. Thank you for your opinion on this topic, it is valued, as are every persons opinion. That is what I asked for after all!

Gator, about the sharpening story, in hindsight, perhaps this was a 'rumour' started as a backhanded swipe at BM? What do you think? I have always been impressed by the Microtech edges.

Regards to the spacer, do you mean the alignement of the spacer? Or the fact that BM use a cheap plastic spacer rather than a metal one? This is something that has been complained about on the BM Forum. I personally have NO issue with this, it has never been a problem for me. See, I am not a total nitpicker!

I started collecting BM's a couple of years ago. After a lucky start finding a 975, I've added a 2550SP, 30, 330, 42, 640BLK, 705-05/00 KOTM, 705BT, 705BT First Production, 705S Pre-Production, 710, 750S First Production, 812SBT-LH, 940-10/00 KOTM, and a 940BT. While only a couple were scary sharp out of the box, that's really a non-issue for me personally. Most of mine get used, so they're gonna need sharpening at some point. I'll usually re-profile the edge for a Sharpmaker, so edge grinds is not an issue either.

At first, I had to look at a few knives, the 812 and 710 as I recall, to find ones that didn't rub the liners. The 812 continually works it way back, but I've bee extremely hard on it and the linerlock is now bent enough that the blade has some play in it. I think the rubbing was an QA issue for BM, but not the bent linerlock.

I also had a screw break when I went to flip the clip on the 705BT for LH carry. My local dealer swapped it out.

Aside from that, I think their QA is top notch, and has gotten noticeably better with the past year's new models, such as the 940.

If BM would take one suggestion, it should be one from Professor - they oughta use brass pivot washers!

If they'd take two, I'd hope they'd improve their on-line PR. Having a website and not supporting it in a timely manner, well, I guess I'm spoiled by BF. Some things they seem to respond to quickly, others appear to be ignored.

I like every Benchmade that I've kept (key word being kept).

Recently QC has been way below par, I've gone through 3 710's in an effort to find a good one (QC wise) and have had no success.

I don't know why they have such a hard time drilling the pivot holes in line with each other.

I did not realize that the Crown allowed its subjects to own knives and other dangerous weapons.

Only wading in here late to get on the score board. I've owned four Benchmade knives -- an early AFO, an early large AFCK, a medium size ASCENT, and a current small AFCK. All have been perfect in the blade grind, sharp, blade center areas. My large early AFCK cracked the handle spacer but was fixed for free with the explanation that all early AFCKs had a handle spacer made from some plastic that had shown cracks over time. It was replaced with delrin, another plastic, which has held up well.

Some of the "deficiencies" mentioned above are not QC or QA problems at all but design problems. A cracked spacer after three years of life, pocket clip screws that won't stay tight, coating that flakes off after use, etc. are not QC issues, they are engineering/design issues. Just a technical correction -- they still do not make anyone any happier.

So from my experience of 4 knives, BM has no QC problem. Some of the broad, general opinions expressed above, beyond personal knowledge, should be disregarded.

Oh yes, even the Matriarch and Civilian are legal here... As long as you have a reason for having one. Not hard to think one up.

Surprisingly we are not the toughest place in Europe for knife laws. By a LONG way! Just ask about Switzerland

I recently bought a 705 & a 710, both in ATS-34. NEITHER had much of an edge on them. I've been trying to sharpen them myself without much success (Meyerco Sharpen-It), and I guess I'm going to have to ship 'em back to the factory, which is a giant pain in the rectum.

For what these things cost, I expect an edge--it's not like I bought WKC knives, which I know going in may or may not have an edge!

Hey General, I was in Zurich, Switzerland last winter, and while autos were illegal, I found a knife store which was absolutely fantastic. A lot of selection, some really high quality stuff.
Re edges, I don't have much sympathy for those who complain about them. If you use a knife, it will get dull, so it pays to learn how. One of the first things I do with any user knife I buy is put a nice edge on it with my Edge Pro.
