What am I missing? CT has a blade limit of 4". If the Socom is 3.98", it's legal. Now the rub. The Socoms blade is 3.98" long, and the CT statute prohibits knives of 4" or longer "cutting edge". I know, as long as I don't do anything stupid I'll likely have no problems as-is, but I like to "hope for the best, but prepare for the worst" and avoid having to get hauled in for an illegal knife, even if later proven to be innocent after spending on a legal defense...
Why would it be “destroying” If I’m going to carry it six months out of the year?Get a smaller knife, don't destroy a Microtech for no reason. Try the Benchmade adamas mini. Best folding knife for the money I've owned.
Any police officer that's going to arrest you for carrying a 4" blade isn't going to care if you add a finger choil to reduce the cutting edge.If your absolutely stuck on carrying the Socom, and feel that it is too close to the legal limit to be comfortable with, I second the idea of adding a finger choil. No special tooling necessary. Hell, I've added a choil to some of mine using a dremmel lol. Just take it slow with plenty of water as to not mess up the heat treat.
I just would prefer to avoid any potential hassle a overly gung ho rookie might give when he left his micrometer at home and sees 3.98” as 4”. And the law is 4” and over is illegal. Felony illegal. So again, not worth the risk to me when the solution is a simple and I’m finding out inexpensive modification. What am I missing? CT has a blade limit of 4". If the Socom is 3.98", it's legal.
I’m not going to use a tanto. I said I’d pick up a drop point version for this. Much thinner tip then the tanto profile. If your absolutely stuck on carrying the Socom, and feel that it is too close to the legal limit to be comfortable with, I second the idea of adding a finger choil. I just feel that if you chopped a quarter inch off the tip, especially already being a tanto, the terminating grind would be so thick that it would be hard to get a respectable cutting edge back on it. Just my .02 cents![]()
Maybe come down from the top (like a wharnie) instead of up? Seems to me would be a little easier and less destructive.
BUY RIGHT KNIFE !!!
Hi David, take a look at my most recent post, I’m talking about a drop point blade, not a tanto.
THIS exactly. If the knife he wants is the Socom Elite, with a mod, then the Socom Elite with a mod is the right knife.
Ok, let‘s take the conversation offline before we aggravate too many people lol.Understood. I still recommend the same approach, it just takes a slightly different line.

And that right there is the sign of a true professional. The other potential issue with trying to come from beneath towards the spine, instead of from above down toward the edge is making sure the tip still fits in the handle instead of poking out slightly. That issue can't happen if we drop the tip height instead of raise it.
With modders and makers around, knife change is never not possible. So change State if knife change is not possible !!!
