Wow, you get some cool stuff!

Sweet stuff guys! JV3, is that Kifaru's new UL stuff?

I know I posted this already, but I just received my custom SAK last night and was able to snap some comparison pics with a standard Vic Farmer and the SwissBianco Bushcrafter. More pics here.

Wow, you get some cool stuff!

have you seen posts by HikingMano and OwenM? they are the true gear whores :p i'm just trying to lighten my pack weight so i can carry more knives instead :D that book by the way was highly recommended by pitdog so i thought i'd check it out.

thanks! yes, that pocket connects to my ku3700. it'll contain my shelter setup and first-aid kit for quick access instead of digging into the main pack.

Whaaaat! Hahaha. Dude, whatever, Owenʻs got a whole basement worth of gear :D:p (read: envy)

Sweet  Thatʻs a good plan. I took the integral rain cover out of my Kestrel and stuck my FAK in there for quick access. On my Talon 44, the FAK is in the top zipper pocket, and the tarptent mounted with the sleeping bag straps on the bottom.

Iʻm going to look around later for whatever you have posted on the Kifaru UL goodness

I think all three of you are pillars of the economy recovery plan! By the way, my Tarptent Stratospire 1 arrived several weeks ago. I took it out last weekend for an overnighter and I love it. My next purchase has gotta be a light weight sleeping bag, which I think is going to be a Feathered Friends Osprey.

Glad you like that Stratospire;)

Wait. What?
Yeah, I get it. You goobs think you're funny, trying to group me in with y'all, because you know you can't stop like I can.
Besides, I'm done, anyway. DONE. Seriously. I just need a bike and a wetsuit, maybe some drypants, a roof rack, 8mm rope...

Ha! Well I've got a Case Sway Back Jack on the way off the exchange, then I'm pretty sure I'm done for a while. My budget won't permit me anyway, and I'm running out of crap to sell as I've reached a pretty good level of refinement and satisfaction in my gear. I think :D. An MLD Cuben Fiber shelter is still far on the horizon....

Mamun, you were doing good with all the BMW, Busse, and Kifaru porn... Then you had to go ruin it with a diet coke!:p:D

LOL. How'd that get in there? How about this one instead?...Just dont mind the top of the can peeking out....

After many back-and-forths, I purchased a Feathered Friends 20 degree sleeping bag, the Swallow in UL Pertex and 900 fill. What an awesome sleeping bag! I traded my almost 3 lb REI bag for it and it is night and day difference in quality, compressability and weight. Between the new tent and sleeping bag, I've shaved almost 5 lbs off of my back.

Very nice! That's an awesome feeling

Your REI bag must be synthetic? My goose one specs at an oz or two over 2lbs. One of these days I'd like to pick up a quilt from Enlightened Equipment. I rarely use my 25* bag as a bag, usually end up using it as a quilt, although I haven't been much below freezing yet. I always overheat for 3-season use, so I'll either pick up another lighter weight bag for 3-season (Western Mountaineering Summerlite or something) or a 20* quilt from Enlightened Equipment that I can button down if doing nights below freezing.

What pack are you using?

It was a 650 fill down bag, the 20 degree Radiant down. I had the long/wide version and it weighed over 3 lbs. The weight difference between the 20 and 30 degree bag was the amount of down, 4 ozs so I choose the 20 degree one. I often encounter temps that hover or dip below freezing in the mountains here in Washington and I wanted a bag that would cover the shoulder seasons. WM bags are really nice too, but the FF won me over due to their location, fabric choices, and the ability to feel one before I bought it. I've read that the Pertex UL fabric was a little more weather resistant than the WM bags, which make since as FF is based out of a state that is renown for its seasonal rain. Honestly, I dont think you'd go wrong with either company though- they seem to be the quality standard bearers for sleeping bags.

Ah, yeah, I see. My Halo is 800 or 850 fill, and normal sized. I forgot you're a taller guy.

It sounds like you made a good choice going with the 20*, since you are in temps around freezing often. I figured 25* (EN 23*) would cover me pretty well for conditions I'd most likely encounter on my trips, especially as a warm sleeper, and so far I've been right. Last time I used my bag in Tahoe in May in freezing temps (along with a REI camp bed and WinterSilks SST top and bottom), I still overheated and had to open the bag in the middle of the night.

I haven't read too much into bag fabrics yet, but your reasoning seems pretty sound . The Enlightened Equipment quilt I've been eyeing uses Impetus 15D-WR (weather resistant), and the last time I checked I couldn't find much comparative info out there. As I go towards more minimal UL shelters, I'm paying much more attention to shell fabrics since there's more risk for the bag getting wet from weather.

I, too, don't think you could go wrong with either, from the reading I've done.

FF makes great bags, tough to go wrong w/ one of their bags

one warning on the WM Summerlite, it's a rather tight cut- I ended up trading my for a Marmot Hydrogen, if the Summerlite fits- it's a great bag, very well constructed (and light!)

Good to know, thanks for the info! The FF Sparrow looks nice for the looser fit  I may end up going milani's route, if not a quilt.

Mike, I got my daypack down to 10.8 lbs! That's including the Sawyer Squeeze  I know I can get below 10 (I'm thinking 8 or 9), with a few small changes.

if you're on the slim to medium end of the scale you'd probably be fine w/ the Summerlite, it was too trim for my liking- I like adding my down jacket to push the rating of my sleep system- a trimmer bag also interferes w/ that

quilt is a good way to go imo, just make sure it's wide enough- to narrow and you'll have gaps, Enlightened makes great quilts, also look at Katabatic if you go the quilt route

good deal on the day pack, a svelte pack makes for more miles :D
