Post up your Snake Pics!

I don't agree.

Yes, there are plenty of rattlesnakes everywhere, in Northern California, but they are not particularly unfriendly, and you don't generally need to have a shotgun handy to make it very far. Rattlesnakes aren't evil and malicious and out to get you. They need to conserve their poison for when they actually need it for hunting or for self defense, and they're not out to envenomate anyone they can at any chance they get (with the possible exception of immature snakes). I've run into plenty of them; I've accidentally stepped on one, barefoot; I've had them slither right over my foot. None have even tried to bite me, yet – just threaten me to leave them alone....

I spent from age 9 until about age 25 hiking, biking, and horse back riding in the NorCal foothills. In all that time, I saw two rattlers, and they were both headed away from whoever found them.

When I moved to SoCal, I saw a lot of rattlers. They're not exactly crawling everywhere, but you need to keep your eyes open.

I've never killed a snake with a gun. I'm sure it's possible, but rocks or a shovel work a lot better.

Here's a shot of an unwelcome visitor to we had, 4 days after moving into our new place in Spokane:

I usually leave them alone, but not when they're 30 feet from my garage, and headed towards the house/lawn where my kids and family are out playing, so I dispatched this one.

Nice pictures. What's the fat snake with rattler like markings, but no rattles?

Thats a Cotton Mouth, aka Water Moccasin. It looks like in the picture it is being less aggressive and more deffensive. Which is my limited experience with them as well. I never quite understood the stories of cotton mouths chasing anyone....

Right you are. Most of the cotton mouths I have encountered you could poke with a stick and observe for 20 minutes without so much as an aggressive movement or false strike. However, some of them just seem to have a complex. I have only seen one that moved aggressively toward me and struck repeatedly at my snake stick. It would be hard to call it being chased by a snake, but he was uncommonly pissed off and very confrontational.

Although its nothing special, this little Garter snake stayed still just long enough for me to shoot her and my Ratweiler!

Another one I found on the road last friday, about a 5 footer and very Camera shy. :D

Friday night the temps here have dropped to the 30's with saturday no going above the 30's with snow.

Where oh where did they go? :D

IMHO, Cottonmouths are terrifying. I've had way too many encounters with them (especially up at Reelfoot Lake in West Tennessee) and they are one mean, aggressive son of a gun.
