You're from near me. Eastern King, Black Rat, Hognose, and a Ringneck. Love it. That is a fat freakin' Hognose! A gravid female, perhaps?

Almost stepped on this one last summer. It started making noise, so I decided to give it some room haha.

Wish I could find the pics of the HUGE black snake we had up in Flagstaff last summer. All of 8' long it was terrorizing the local gopher population.

I'm down in Westchester county. The pics were taken in Harriman state park, while hiking on the Kakiat trail I think. Can't remember where in Harriman I was .

I've been told that it is venomous, but not all that bad compared to other snakes in North America. Harriman is a great place to hike, with trails all over the place, and Bear Mt has a sweet car show every wednesday on the main field starting soon.

On a sidenote (not to thread-jack), I noticed your avatar. VW/Audi ASR or ESP symbol?

They are quite toxic. As far as rattlesnakes go that one ( C. horridus) is in the top 30 percent for venom yield/toxicity. They are however fairly easy to deal with because most individuals are reluctant to bite and most bites, from adults, are "dry" for the initial strike. I've been working with the Catoctin population of this species for several years, tracking ranges and seasonal movements with radio telemetry. This is a typical example of this snakes temperament.

Here are a few of my favorite female copperhead. She's in the tracking program as well and is the first snake that I did the telemetry device implant surgery on by myself. I have done several dozen in the years since her, but she's the most memorable. I track her about twice a month on average and she's become so used to me that she lets me get close to her with my camera to get shots like these.

That bottom pic is me releasing her four years ago after implanting the tracker.

How long will the tracker work?

There are lots of different kinds. How long they work depends on the battery type. Most of the ones that we use for adult snakes will last for about a year before needing to be replaced. The ones we use on box turtles can last up to 18 months but they are a bit larger. We try to change the trackers when the "ping" is noticeably weaker, even if it isn't the scheduled time yet. The last thing you want is to lose a study animal and have all the data wasted....
