Post your firearms collection!

Well, if the rest of the forum dwellers here think like I do then guns are simply tools, tools perform a job or make performing a job easier. Sure I can try to wrestle a deer and kill it that way to feed myself and my family or I can shoot it. Sure, I may be able to stomp a rattle snake before it bites and kills me. Or I can pull the pistol from my hip and kill it before it kills me.

Also... yeah... if you have something you're not supposed to have please don't post it here or anywhere on the internet... you never know who's watching...

well , I know they are not meant to be per se, but I consider them works of machine art-- almost like a steam engine or a simple water wheel, it is a tool, but a tool so perfect in its job that it elaborates into art, I just love weapons in general for that purpose alone, as I am not a martial artist or anything, I just like the way guns and blades look, I don't really think about the damage they do, but the effort it takes to machine them.

I will post my own gun collection(which is almost entirely revolvers) separate from my old man's stuff which is still a mighty collection of pretty rare ww1 and ww2 stuff, all the parts are original to the pieces, and in most cases the original receiver was welded to the frame where necessary. I am being slow because some of the things are rather large and unwieldy but I will post them-- we have a 75 mm recoilless and a shoulder mounted that I think is 57 mm, neither one works of course, but its very cool, I have dummy rounds for the 75 with carrying cases.

I had quite a few good times with machine guns in my youth, and I daresay the landscape is poisoned with lead from how many belts were put into it :/-- but too many neighbors now.-- RESERVED FOR FUTURE PICTURES !!!!

Twolfnm So what powders are you finding good matches for those 175MKs? my husband seems to prefer 39-40grains N140 for that bullet in a M14 base rifle. Not sure what a commercial Savage would think of that though.

Hi, Shavru! :)

Well, almost anything works well in a .308, and I've been loading a LOT of 175s with leftovers of IMR 4064, Reloder 15, Hodgdon Varget, and VihtaVuori N140 and N550. That bolt gun and a few others will hold less than 1.25 MOA out past 600 meters with all of those powders.

But if you're lookin' for serious sub-MOA performance, or as close to that as you can get?

*IF* I still had a .308 gas gun like an M14/M1A, or even a DSA FAL ;) I think that Varget, N140, or Hodgdon H4895 would be the best performers. All 3 of those aren't very temperature sensitive. That is 30+ years of reloading experience talking, and it would come down to the individual rifle as to which of those it liked the best. I try to build pet loads in the spring and fall at ~65*F, which is our annual average here. That way, they will shoot nicely no matter what the temperature is out there. Of course, I have tons of data to build loads for our monthly distance matches, according to the forecast temp.

I'm not as anal as a benchrest shooter, but I get pretty picky about my match loads, especially when there's some expensive beer waiting for the top 3 shooters. :D

That Savage has a fast barrel, and it chronos 150-200 fps faster than published load speeds, so I use VV N150 in that girl, with H4895 as a backup powder. If she had a normal barrel, she would probably love N140 ... ;)

Bottom line, tell yer ol' man to try those other two if he wants, at 0.3 gr intervals and 200 yards, with 5 round groups, if he doesn't do that already. And I imagine he has a chronograph/skyscreens, right? That's the ONLY way to test rifle loads.
Testing at 100yds or with less than 5rd groups won't tell you anything you really want to know. :D

Oh, and I would never post pics I kept of the really wild toys, although I paid a lot for the dubious honor of owning them legally. But, alas, they were all lost in the great fire of '07. Really! :D

OK, sorry for derailing the thread, people. Seeya ...

LOL twolfnm Thanks, but actually I was asking what YOU were using just because you were so detailed with the rest but left that out so it had me curious. I already know what all of my rifles prefer. However the only .308 we have around here these days is the M25 which is a M14 based SSS so that is why I used it to compare. And it really likes the N140 better than the N150 even adjusting the grains for the difference in the powders. Just seems those NM barrels don't seem to like the N150. which is strange because with a 175grain (really anything 155 or heavier) the N150 is usually the better choice.

In general for the distances I shoot .308 is a little... erm.. light to keep at moa with any sort of wind LOL. .338L is about the minimum these days to get into a mile shooting and if I am reaching out to touch a target I generally prefer the 6.5s because they are a lot flatter and don't blow around as much. though hubby uses 50bmg and .408/419 cheytec for his shooting though both of us learned on M24s (.308) in the Army. (Yes, I know as a female they wouldn't usually let me play with them, but I was on the post shooting team.)

Oh and we are in the Cantina, So I have been told slight deviations to thread path isn't a problem as long as it isn't too wild a swing but if I need to cut back someone just politely nudge me and I will shut up I promise LOL.

Shavru, I figured you knew your stuff, I just didn't know to what extent. Guess that clears that up! :)
I know precisely what you're saying, but it's nice of you to add notes for some of the readers.

Maybe the reason that M25/M21 doesn't like N150 is, despite a better case fill, it might be bordering on an overpressure load? N150 is too slow for a lot of .308s. But then you'd see the primers starting to back out? Maybe? What does the Pact machine say? LOL!

Yeah, it could be the barrel. I've talked to Dan Lilja, Robbie Krieger, Jim Hart, and just about every other barrel maker out there, and one thing is certain:
Barrels can be funny critters, and your M25 sounds a little off, like my BVSS. Although I took the time to painstakingly break in, cryo, lap, etc. that cheap factory barrel, it's still one in 10,000. I'll be sorry when I finally burn it out. :(

I try not to shoot it too much anymore, because even though there's a "new" Douglas #7 barrel all set to go for her, I can get my hands on other .308s for that 800m slot. And as you said, stuff with much better BCs and range, but not as much horsepower, like the 6.5/.284. I also know where to find some toys that fill in at longer ranges, although I never went for that M107 or newer A1 I think about. But there is that TRG42 that is an old friend. I'm kinda old school in that I prefer the older, more common rifle calibers, with a 3 in the front. Hell, I remember when 6.5/284 was a weird new wildcat! But I don't shoot much past 1500 meters. Like Matt Quigley, it isn't that I'm not good at it, it's just that I don't see much of a need for it. ;)

Then again, if I ever get around to that .416 Barrett, I might change my mind just like that. It does have the edge on that .408 Cheyenne Tactical. Nasty overbored beasts! :D

Well, I went off on a tangent again, sorry, people. :)

Enough about rifles. Who wants to see a Dan Wesson Model 15VH? I still have the 4" and 8" barrels! I could try to take a few pics with this newfangled Wonderphone thing if you like! :D

No apologies to Python, Model 27, 686, or GP100 fans, the Dan Wesson is the most mechanically perfect and insanely accurate .357 ever made! I bought mine back in '77.

But no shotgun pics. I've never owned a Saiga with a drum mag in my life, I swear ... ;)

OOh Greghvac with a caption like 2 stamps you had me all set, I even went and got a towel for the drool... then broke my heart with a broken link? or is it just me it doesn't work for?

Twolfnm, Funny, I never got a PACT. We use an antique LOL, a CED Millenium with IR screens. Haven't upgraded to a M2 because I just don't trust the self adjustments of the skyscreens. Anytime it can modify itself I feel uncomfortable believing it is consistant and hubby so far has gone along with my paranoia.

Isn't it amazing how each barrel is different, sort of like the Khuks here. Even though many of the barrels are mass produced they seem to vary wildly in personality, though proper break-in does make a world of difference. And I definately agree a Barrett .416 is on my wish list. Unfortuantely I wasn't good enough last year for Santa to bring me that...well at least that is the only reason I can think of for my not getting it.

Show us the 15VH LOL. I wanna see, I wanna seeeeeeeee!!

Just to jump back to thread here is a pic of my favorite rifle these days.

Barett MRAD in .338lapua Mag

Beautiful rifle! Shiny stuff rocks!

Also I personally don't care if the topic goes off track a bit so long as it's still sorta firearms related, I love learning new things!

Don't got any of them guns. Nope, none.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Just because you're paranoid does not mean their not out to get you.

yeah but if the government comes to get you, not really much you can do :D, may as well be carefreeee! also be polite, besides ATF is much cooler than people give them credit for. bad press, justified in many cases, but 3 decades old or 2 decades old in those two cases. otherwise they do a hard job, and weapons of war should be watched, simple as that, I mean you can own a tank with a working gun if you get the right licenses.

I disagree. I don't want nobody watching me. I don't want anybody looking at me. I get nervous when they even think of me.

Course I have no evil intentions but of course can't prove that to the self proclaimed watchers. If you have a black rifle, you have to be up to no good right?

well more talking about actual machine guns and explosives, which you can own if you go through the right hoops-- I dont think any of the recent anti gun hype took hold, nobody in america is giving up their guns-- and I am liberal, but you would never see me saying "we need less guns on the streets" I kinda agree with heinlen, I think every reasonable person should have a pistol and be able to shoot a unreasonable person who tries to kill them.

Withdrawn, my fingers sometimes type faster than my brain.

I think your pulling our legs. I have zero hate for you by good friend but you are right everyone hates liberals.

LoL, Love the Chiappa Zombie slayer Gehazi. Though I don't think you should consider Mexican carry  with either of those. I will tell you what, you can be a liberal all you want and I will support you in that right, right up until it effects my rights like they are doing in Connecticut. :D

The MRAD is the reason Santa didn't bring me the .416 I had a BORs and Leopold Mark IV setup for it that I got instead, I am getting lazy in my old age and tired of calculating windage and holdovers then manipulating for temperature and... YAY for computerization LOL.

Well, that is a nice rig, Shavru. BORs, huh? Hmmm ... ;)
Oh, you forgot to put that other "n" by the end of that communist country you mentioned. :D
And Greghvac, maybe God didn't want you posting your Class 3 stuff on here.
Gehazi, even a liberal should know that those contraptions are going to burn your nice khuks with all the muzzle blast. :D

OK, LOL ...

As promised, here's the Dan Wesson. It's actually a model 15-2 VH, made in '77. Second gen Model 15, Ventilated Heavy barrels. The great thing about the DWs is that you can interchange the barrels/shrouds and set the headspace precisely. That's part of what makes them more accurate than other revolvers from the '70's, and most others even today.

Don't get me wrong, as far as wheelguns, I love most Rugers and Smiths, and Colt has a few that I like. But these are pretty cool 'cuz you just don't see many around anymore.

Anyways, here she is with the 4" barrel:

5 minutes later with the 8" barrel:

And, just for you S&W 686 fans, I found this old pic:

OK, that's enough. The Great Fire of '07 destroyed everything but a few old guns, and I'm sure y'all don't wanna see more pics of stuff I used to have. Right? ;)

Besides, I have to get busy around here this weekend. Seeya.

I love dan wesson old revolvers! great picks, dan wesson built one of the finest revolvers around for a period of years there
