Greetings all,

I have been conversing for the last couple of days with a forum member about a sale that was posted by me last week.

I posted a sale, as I often do, to reduce overstock on hand. Part of the sale was an Urban Shark for $22.00.

I sold it, and then marked it as sold in the posting.

Now this thing costs me $19.98, so obviously this is not a sale that I plan to carry on indefinitely, just had a couple to get rid of.

I am not going to name any names at this point, as I believe that this person will address this, if needed.

This person tried to order the knife at the price of $22.00. I emailed back telling him that we had sold out of what we had on hand, and that others would be at our regular price posted on the internet. Sounds reasonable, huh ?

I get a reply "If you have posted a knife at a given price and that knife is available don't you feel obliged to make good on the advertised price?"

and then explained it again to him.

this morning I get this "Your post said nothing about stock on hand. Do you want to reconsider to show some good will? This is a matter of principle to me and I am willing to pursue it further if necessary."

Now I might have gotten another for this person at that price, but now I don't think so. Seems a lot of frustration over $22.00 on his end and $2.02 profit on mine.

I fully expect this person to make a flaming post about this shortly, and just wanted to set the record straight up front.

I've never dealt with you John.......but when you get ready to make your profit margin lower than the $2.02.....please let me know !

haha

Good will? Amazing!

There are some folks out there that "expect" a free knife for just answering an ad.

Sounds as if a someone is tryin' to hump ya !

I'm feelin' your frustration John! I wouldn't worry about the "humper" tryin' to post a "nasty" over this BS !

If he does ~ then he's "definitely" not the sharpest tool in the shed !

John,
I am with you also. I have dealt with John on a couple of occasions and have always being extremely pleased. No matter what comes of this I will definitely do business with you again.
Thanks
Eric

Too bad that one guy has to try to ruin it... If I were John and this was what I got for giving one guy a great deal on a knife, I'd reconsider doing it again. John's done this quite a few times; posting a great deal for one lucky buyer, and I've kicked myself a couple of times for being too late (especially with the Sifu/Sharpmaker combo

) but to demand he cut me the same deal? It wouldn't even have crossed my mind!

I think that guy is just upset that he didn't get in on a $22 Urban Shark fast enough. If you only have three to sell at a certain price, you only have three.

If I understand correctly, he wants you to order one for him, then sell it to you at a close out price? That's crazy...I can't think of any store that will special order something and give you the closeout price.

thanks for the support guys ! I have just blown this off as 1 in 1,000,000. I am pleased to know that my reputation is in tact here. I felt it prudent to make a pre-emptive strike on this issue before it got out of hand. I have worked long and hard to stay off the bad and ugly side of this forum.

I really had not planned to do this. It took me forever even find this site. The only reason I am responding is because John has misrepresented the facts. He says, "I sold it, and then marked it sold in the posting". In fact, he left it posted for sale after he sold the knife and only marked it sold on 5/18 after he heard from me(see his original post on 5/13 and the 5/18 change). When I ordered the knife, it was posted at the lower price wiht no indication of any limitation whatsoever. He was not sold out of the knife; in fact he tried to sell me one at the higher price. He was just sold out of the one that he offered at the reduced price. This is the lightfoot urban shark- hardly a knife that would be overstocked or discontinued. It is one of the hot new releases. When he informed me that the knife was not in stock, he invited me to shop his website. There is a name for this. It's called "bait and switch" and where I come from its illegal. Let's see if his subsequent "sales" state that there are limitations on stock. Perhaps dealers should indicate the fact that they are only selling one of the knives they have in srock and then promptly post the fact of sale. If he had done this, I never would have contacted him. But wait, he would have lost the opportunity to solicit my business to buy from his website. Lets see if he is willing to do as I propose. I'll be watching and hopefully so will you.
It would have been so easy- all he had to do is sell one of the knives he admittedly had in stock at the price he posted. Is that really too much to ask? Is his integrity not even worth the couple of dollars it would have cost him?

As you can see by my number of posts I am still new to this site, but I have to say in response to Laro1 Get over it
He had a knife for sale,he sold it,you missed it.
he does not owe you anything and you should not be accusing anyone of bait and switch as
you can always say No
I don't think John owes you either a discounted price on a knife or an apology
He honored the price on what he posted for sale
thank you

I don't know either party.

These are very small numbers, seems like a small hill to choose to fight from.

It seems from the Cumberland Knives post that he was even thinking about ordering a knife and selling it to the guy for the listed price, but not after being threatened. That is what I dislike about disagreements, some turn too quickly to threats.

Bait and Switch has nothing to do with selling out of stock on hand, then ordering another knife and charging a higher price. Some dealers don't keep great numbers in stock, and when a knife doesn't move for a while they choose to run specials to move old inventory. Inventory turns are the bread and butter of any retailer, or wholesaler, or distributor.

Bait and switch is when I try to sell you a Dodge Viper because I am out of the Dodge Neons I advertised for $5.00.

I'm a pretty fart smeller, and it sounds to me like buyer didn't get his way, buyer threatened seller, seller isn't going out of his way to please threatening buyer.

But then again, I think Elvis is still alive.

I consider this matter closed and will make no further posts on the subject. You have no idea what my stock level is. I will continue to post sales on this forum. I will do business with you, if you ever choose to shop with us again in a professional manner. All of my posted sales are on stock on hand, unless otherwise specified. I do plenty of business without "baiting" customers. I know where you get that term, and also talked to Mike T this morning on the issue and he is in agreement with me. No dishonesty is, or has been involved on my end. I will mark all future sales as being limited to stock on hand, to avoid future misunderstandings. Peace to you.

TELL YOU WHAT, YOU SEND ME YOUR ADDRESS OVER EMAIL AND I'LL SEND YOU YOUR KNIFE, GRATIS !

There's my Integrity. Take it and do what you want with it.

John I am still with you as I stated in my earlier post. I hope that everyone can move on. Laro1 you haven't been a member here long and I think there may have been a misunderstanding as to John's sale. If you keep your eye on the dealer sale forum you will get a chance at another good deal. But to be honest this is going to be a hard battle for you to win. Too many extremely happy customers on Johns side.
Eric

Err.. John, I don't think you need to do that. It's not your fault in any way.

Stay cool,
Dan

John,
I did not expect a free knife, although I appreciate the good faith of your offer. How about I send you $22.00 plus shipping and you send me the knife?

John at Cumberland Knives. Most definitely one of the good guys. (As if there was ever any doubt).
