Practicality for Combat?

Does anyone actually take something like a FBM or an HH into combat situations? I love these knives (although HR is my favorite) but not being a Marine and having no experience with such situations (respect given!) thought maybe these knives are too big and heavy to take into combat? Do you need that kind of chopping power/prying, etc? What do you guys who are/were in the armed forces think?

Traditionally "Combat Knives" are more in the 5"-7" category, so I think a Hell Razor would be more of a military knife than the camping/utility. I would also love for the people in the service to comment on the day-to-day of a soldiers knife. Would it be better if you could carry a bigger knife?

It all comes down to personal preference and what your mission is. To tell you the truth, Unfortunatly, If I had to pick a knife from my stash to go to combat with, I wouldn't have a Busse that is the right length or width for what I would need it for. If I had to choose from the knives I own, I would take my CRK Green Beret with 7 inch blade.

I am carrying the mud razor now on my webbing and it isn't too heavy or bulky. 7" would be about the maximum I would want to carry with the army and is even seen as a little too big by most guys, but I like knives, so I don't mind the extra size. I can't imagion the FBM hanging of my chest rig, but, what a bush blade it will make!!

Blasphemy!!!!! What about the Hell Razor, Satin Jack, and not to mention Natural Outlaw.

Now you must send me all your INFI... ;)

I'm not military, but my buddy says that the Satin Jack or SFNO or NO-E would be good picks, just like Snafu says! He also says that a Hell Razor with a fully sharpened top edge would be perfect.

mud razor , st-56 arent these military overruns ? that would imply that they are being used would it not ?

combat? killing people? what do you mean by combat?

better off with somthing smaller... like a ranger shank.. pull a knife like that on me and i would put the mother of all beatings on you.. and im not that fit..

a hellrazer i would think would be to easy to block and grab out of the hand.. don't forget about weight/speed

What was your daily use of a knife? You see companies advertising this knife can do this and that. What is the most typical use day to day. Do the service personnel really have to open cans and ammo crates like they say in the magazines or even punch holes in brick walls to shoot through them? With modern weaponry and team tactics I take actual knife fighting is almost zero, probably sentry elimination (and that is probably pushing it).

having a big knife in the middle of combat would be a misstake.. it would add more weight and possibly couse problems .. how much do they carry in those backpacks now? 100 pounds or more? + ammo?

I traded my hell razor for a badger attack 3. Maybe if we still fought in the forests and jungles that I would of kept it. Having the Hell Razor on me, had the 1SG look at me like I was acting crazy. But having the BA3 is alot better, not to mention lighter. I use my swiss tool just as often as I do a knife. UTILITY is what knives are usually for.

Bigger knives just get in the way. I suppose a machete would be nice for clearing brush if you didn't have to worry about being tactical.

Maybe my definition and your definition of "satisfactory condition" differ, but I would say you lived. Though being brain-dead does count to a degree.

No almost

Sentry elimination is done with a 500lb bomb.

HRs do look really similar to the M9 bayonet.

I'd take a HR into combat.

I'd also take a FBM into the steaming jungle too, where a good chopper is needed. But, in the sandbox, I really doubt it.
