Practicality for Combat?

in military situ, weight and reach are the compromise. Definately fixed blade... i would lean towards a cheap SRK or KaBar, if i need to pry or it chips, id get a new one... The fantasy or myth of knife to knife combat, and or breaking anothers blade on your blade is BS, so INFI vs. 440 is not much of an issue in that situ, and on bodies in clothes, both work great, heft for chopping, thin for sticking, but all work.

In an "Urban" battle, what you got is what you got... but a local SHTF situ, weight is less of a concern... so an AK/sword would be great, personally,.. i would want a SMATCHET on my hip... slash, stick, move quick,... does it all. Something like a FBM is great for some, but with my size its heft would slow me down, and i like to be more spritely if i ever need to use it...

And when you trust your life to CRAP and it predictably breaks and you CAN'T get a new one..............then what ?

You're SOL.......and that's a 'best case'.....

Far from crap my good man.
Just as many a bodies lay waste from a .22lr, i dont need to carry a .454, finding a nice .40 will do just fine by me. By that same token, not much metal is really necessary to do a guy, and what i listed will certainly not be broken by bone or flesh, or beard... I recall how deadly the Zulu were with their rusted out hand hammered short swords, even against the armed english
