Practicality for Combat?

Here's one perspective, cut and pasted from an email I just received from a friend who was there.

First Email (I asked him if he took the picture):
Nope but thats him... crazy bastard;)

Second Email, requesting some background info:
Najaf. April 4,20004 He ran out of ammo and charged a mob of savages that were beating his buddy down taking prisoner for the Mahdi Army.

These motherf---ers had GUNS.

And when that lil brown devil came rippin threw them? They s--t their pants.

Balls the size of Texas boy.

Yeah, I threw an award ceremony for him in front of his BN. Presented him with the Chris Reeve GB. Man he was so f--king proud. Sec. Rmy went to El Slvador in 2005 and awarded him the Silver Star. Not common for anyone let alone a foreighn national.

Chris Reeve read about the story and sent me a replacement for my GB. Its in my kit bag ready for work.

But that Benchmade folder you gave me is in my pocket right now.

Miss you brother.

"B"

That's from my friend who was there, that's not wikipedia or google. Just the straight facts as I know them.

OOps! edited for spelling!

Thanks JW!

"Little Brown Devil" indeed!

Thanks for the info!

Best regards,

John

Does anyone actually take something like a FBM or an HH into combat situations? I love these knives (although HR is my favorite) but not being a Marine and having no experience with such situations (respect given!) thought maybe these knives are too big and heavy to take into combat? Do you need that kind of chopping power/prying, etc? What do you guys who are/were in the armed forces think?

The FBM and HH are to heavy/slow in combat, good camp knives. For combat use you'll need a good knife that is fast. I'll like the feel of a Extrema ratio Col Moschin and a Venom got them both,:D also not much can beat a Mad dog Panther and a Mercworx Sniper!!!... For Busse knives the ST-56 has the looks and the design of a very good fighter.

Any chance you can actually site an article or a web link? I'd like to read it because that Salvadorian Cpl is about the only "real" knife fight I've read about in Iraq.

I'm worried now the source of the news is the UK Sun, I don't know if it is a serious news paper but still.

They were british troops not american forces. Can anybody confirm if this is true.

Depends on theatre. In the jungle group in Colombia, I used a knife quite a bit and always made it a point to carry a capable blade. I spoke to a good friend of mine who operates extensively in Bolivia and on one operation they encountered a casuatly. Their options were to:
1) hump their injured buddy approx 14 kilometers to the next designated landing zone....or
2) cut their own LZ with the tools (carried knives and machetes) they had on them.

It took them four days to cut the LZ. I explained to him what a battle mistress was and he told me that he sure would have wanted one.

A knife is a tool, more than a weapon. But it is a very useful tool.
thanks for this post, it is very insightful.

Id take an HR into combat, the point of balance seems to be perfectly centered on the front rivet/right below the finger choil, this makes it very easy to switch grips by spinning the knife in your palm. ive been using a hellrazor for everyday knife kata practice since i got it, its much easier to maneuver than any other knife ive bought, i dont know if its just how its balanced or what but i can make it DANCE. lol. Its got the weight, sharpness and the length i would need. but to each his own.

I'd think of something like a hell or mud razor, something geared mainly towards use as a cutting tool but also very tough. Spreading jam on bread, cutting open packages, rope, wire, etc. This is without a doubt going to be the main usage, and probably the only thing the knife is going to be used for, so I want a knife that's 90% optimized for that task. As a combat weapon it's going to be very much a desperate last resort anyway, so as long as it isn't an extremely, practically unusably terrible choice for that, I'm not going to make a call based on that.

Ok what's up with the negative energy. This should calm all. :D

Umm, that dress is unpractical for combat. Although if she wore it under a nomex flight-suit she'd be ok.
Just looking out...

Show 'em your Vegas prize knife, flatlander!! Come on, please??? I **love** that blade!

My Nuke was delivered to me by Jerry at THE INFI 1500 after I retired from the military in 2003. It is one of the Nukes that were made about the same time as the Vegas knives.
Just to clarify a little. Sorry no pics but we'll see what the fat man in the sleigh brings me next Monday;)

My mistake. I do love that knife! With the distinction of how you received it, probably not as much as you though! Three years too late but I feel compelled to say it anyway:

Congrats!!

I don't know about combat knives but the mojo would make ap retty good fighting knife if the need ever came up.
