Hey guys,

I recently picked up a new belt sander, a bunch of belts, buffing compounds and a few machetes. I am going to practice on these just for fun and when I get to 1000 posts I am going to give one away (if anyone wants one:eek:).

Anyhow, I am going to try to put a full satin finish with a convex edge. The handles will get wrapped with hockey tape (Okay Rambo:D).

Anyhow, I tried shaping the handle on one and found out they are hollow:mad: I stopped sanding when I realized this.

Here is where I am at right now (you can see where I started hitting "hollow handle"):

Anyhow, I want to do this as a way to show my appreciation for all the kind people on this forum (even if its not much I CAN't give away a Busse:p)

Sounds like a cool project. Here's an idea I stole from another machete project on BFC. Bring the edge right down to the handle, and make that edge a more acute angle. Then you can make wood shavings, cut notches, etc.

I like the handle mods!!!

So, you're giving one of these away at the 1,000 post mark???. . . Well then, fire up that keyboard!!!!!

Extremely generous offer man!!!!

Now get postin'! ! ! ! !

Jerry :D

Thanks for the kind words boss. Yeah, I am giving three away to buddies at work and one here at the forums. I am trying to learn to put a satin finish on a blade. I ordered some 3m belts from 40-500, a few leather belts and buffing compounds.

Here is what I came up with after a real quick attempt with the belt that came with my little kalamazoo sander on my old machete:

Thanks again boss:)

Rich, that satin finish is looking pretty good.

You realize by doing this you are going to have your email flooded with requests right?

If you don't mind, while you do it let us know your process and equipment.

hey richstag, those look awesome, yea i will be glad to have one, don't have a machete in the stable right at the moment, great job!!!

Nice work mang,,,

I am with Boss on the handle mods. I have thought about the same thing as you were but have not gathered the nerve to do it! Keep us updated kind sir.

Nice... Looks good so far. I've got some G10 laying around that I would swap out those scales with if I win one.

That is a great idea. I think it is known that the handles on these things are complete crap. I would not really know where to start to put new handles on though:confused:

To the handle guys:

If I get some micarta or wood and some fasteners what tools would I need? I guess I can drill my own mounting holes?

I was thinking I could dig up a jigsaw for general shaping?

If I go to the woods for materials would a planer work for making flat sides?

I am clueless.

Thanks for any help.

there is alot of steel on those machete patterns its a mod happy man's dream.

So far i have half finished a golock type short blade, and a second larger one with a two handed handle from a 22" machete. no edge work as of yet.

I wish i had a belt sander i would do more work on the edges currently it takes forever doing it with norton stones.

The handles are fairly easily replaced on those for mikarta or G-10 slabs with standoffs and bolts. The holes are a tad bit smaller than 1/4 inch and the steel under the handle didn't appear to be completely hardened as it was easy to drill out and then ream the small bit extra to make the fit.

Crappy pic but those are 1/4x11" G-10 slabs. with torx bolts and 1/4 SS standoff underneath, you would have to counter drill the slabs a bit but they fit up nicely.

it is also missing about 5/16-3/8 of the spine from the back side of the blade, I just changed the angle the spine leaves the handle.
