Practice

Here are three different angles of it so far. Sorry for the lighting.

I am done all that I am going to do with this one. I kept the sides flat and the edge convex. I tried to make that little fuzz maker or whatever that is for near the handle.

Foo, I am sending you everything in this pic but the NMFBM:D

Thanks to everyone who helped me do this:)

I figured out a lot and my next attempt is bound to yield much better results:thumbup:

Hey Hogs:D

I am moving on to my next one. Trying to take all of my mistakes from the first one and learn from them. For this one I am going to fasten black canvas micarta handle slabs and try to produce an actual satin finish (Not just the varying sized scratch marks of the first attempt:D)

Anyhow, here is what the inside of these high tech handles look like:

Why is this still in the Busse forum? Well, because you guys are cool;)

And it would be nice to be comfortable enough to strip and satin one of my coated busse knives one day down the road. That will probably never happen but who knows. Blah blah blah:barf:

Looking for feedback on this one if anyone is willing to take the time. Is this finished enough for under a handle? Also, is this too fine or too coarse for the entire blade? Also, pointers are very welcome.

Thanks!

I went over the blade finish and the edge a little more and put black canvas micarta handles on. Not completely finished on the handle because I realized the micarta dust was making its way out of the basement and into the rest of the house so I stopped. Going to switch to wood for the next handles. Thought you all would want to see what I finished up with for this one.

THAT My Friend... is THE NICEST machete I've EVER seen!!! Great Work!!! When you're ready to start selling those modded machete's....I'll be waiting in line!!!! So far I've really liked both styles you've come up with!!!

damn, that one looks awesome. well done.
+2
I also, would like to get in line. I'm going to pick up some supplies soon and attempt some of the same. I'll have some questions for you soon :D

That last one looks almost like a mirror finish. What grit/compound did you leave off at?

Thanks a lot guys! The idea of people wanting to PAY for one of these is flattering. I am not doing this to sell any though:o Just for fun and practice.

As far as how I did it and the finish I can answer that I think. For the handles I didn't use anything fancy, just a handheld jigsaw clamped upside down. Can't find a blade for the OLD floor standing jigsaw:confused: I just cut a piece of micart in half, drilled ¼ inch holes, then I figured how deep I wanted the shoulders of the fasteners to go and I drilled 5/16 inch. I attached the handle slabs. I used a 40 grit belt to shape and then a 180 belt to finish it a little nicer. I didn't really finish the handle like I wanted but I am not poisoning my entire family and the pups, they don't have respirators:D

For the blade I am not sure how I would repeat that but I can tell you what I did. While experimenting and trying to help 230 I found some things I liked. Basically I went 40, 80, 120 with zirc belts on the platen until all of the original HEAVY grind marks were gone. Then I used nothing but cork belts. I used 180, 240, 320, 400, 600 and then plain cork. I tried different compounds with these. Going all the way to plain cork did give me an almost perfect mirror finish. I actually went all around a few times until I went right from a mirror polish to a cork 180 with green compound and it gave me this. The pic actually shows what "satin" is there you just have to look hard. In person it is a really cool finish. Hit the light just right and it is a neat satin and the rest of the time it is basically mirror.

For the edge I also tried a lot of different things. What I ended up liking best was to stop with a 3M grinding belt at 320 grit and finished with a leather belt and white compound. Very sharp and polished.

I am really happy how this turned out and feel that anyone can do this. I am a, “if you can do it I can do it” type guy. This is my new found hobby and it is very relaxing. Thanks again for all the positive input 
