Prayers Requested

Update:

Surgery actually took place this morning, and the surgeon said it went well. He repaired the damaged vertebrae, and he reported no perforations (that he could see) in the spinal cord.

They've put a HALO brace on, and my cousin's husband is supposed to be taken by air ambulance to a spinal clinic near Atlanta this week if all goes well.

I don't think any additional feeling or mobility has come back yet. It's still a matter of wait and see with the swelling. According to my uncle, the quicker he recovers sensation and movement, the better the long-term prognosis.

What he does have going for him is that he's young (early 20s), in good shape, and in good health otherwise. The doctors said that the damage would have been much worse if he'd been out of shape.

Thanks to all for the continued well wishes.

Round 3 - On the way...

It looks like he dodged the bullet. What a relief!

Still praying for a full recovery...

I'm sure he's scared to death as well as depressed with the possibility of paralysis. The frustration and helplessness, I can only imagine. I'm hoping that he can keep a positive attitude and avoid falling into despair while he waits out this swelling, which is certainly putting a lot of pressure on the spinal cord. He does have a lot of family around him down in Florida, and he'll have even more once he makes it up to Atlanta. We're all hoping and praying to see some improvement in the next couple of days.

Guyon, I just saw this.

Prayers and thoughts sent to you and your family!!

Just an update after over 5 months:

My cousin's husband (Aaron) did have some good news this week as he was able to move a toe. I'm told this is extremely uncommon in the 5th month for someone with his injury. He is still confined to a wheelchair, but the use of his hands does seem to be showing some improvement. The other night, he grabbed a remote control and manipulated it without thinking (typical male move) and then was astonished at what he'd done. Such signs are small but promising.

My uncle has set up a website for him. This uncle is a bee farmer and runs the "Queen Bee Gifts" mentioned on the site. If you're interested, you can find more info about Aaron here: http://www.aaronpolk.info

Sounds like good news to me. :) I hope that this is just the tip of the recovery 'iceberg", as his condition improves... To 100%, I'm hoping!

Guyon,
Thank you for the update, and for the link to Aaron's web site.
It's humbling to read about his circumstances and how he and his wife are handling them. Thanks again for sharing the good news.

Oh man, sorry to hear that. You and your family will be in our thoughts. Best wishes to him for a good recovery.

Thanks, guys.

His wife has been a real trooper. I know I've been impressed by how much she's taken on. Aaron, to his credit, seems upbeat and positive in his outlook. I'm certain such factors have played a role in the ground that he has regained.

He will continue to be in my prayers for sure. Thanks for the update

The advances we are making in repairing neurological damage are astonishing. Here's to wishing him all the luck in the world.

Hey bro, sorry to hear all this, Warm Wishes and Prayers sent out! Godspeed for a full recovery.

Bruised nerves can recover full function. In case it's relevant, I'll mention my recent experience. Due to repeated very severe bleeding, I had an artery clamped off permanently. It was between the bridge of my nose and the corner of an eye, but deep underneath a nerve bundle. I had complete numbness over that part of my face as a result of the surgeon lifting up the nerve bundle to gain access to the artery, but about nine weeks have passed now and nearly all the feeling has returned. May the fellow with the neck injury be so lucky.
