So, inside the Esee Laser Strike I got there was a firesteel of sorts. I /think/ it is a magnesium ferro rod.
I decided tonight I was going to do a make shift fire starting session. SO I got some dryer lint and I got my leatherman out, and I got a pie pan that I put on a board across the sink.
First thing I did was just some magnesium and lit it with the rod. It took a few tries to figure out what worked the best but I was able to figure it out. I was able to replicate every time. So I took some dryer lint and put it down, then did the magnesium and lit it. I was surprised how quickly it burned.
So, I took one of my ranger bands, wrapped the dryer lint around it scratched the magnesium off, and lit it. Apparently the lint burns TOO quickly and won't get to the ignition point for the ranger bands in time. It did get it warm enough to start to disfigure the band.
On an off chance I took the ranger band and lit it with my zippo. Holy jeez that thing burns FOREVER relatively at least.
I doused all the materials cleaned up.
So, I took the left over lint I had and tucked it into some clam shell packaging that I had left over from some cold lozenges. Wrapped those into ranger bands put one into each of the packs on the tweeners. It isn't much but I figure if worse comes to worse I have the basic materials with me to start a small fire in an emergency.
