Apples and oranges kind of thing -- the BK9 is a good production knife that chops. The M18 is a purpose driven tool that currently shares a common handle shape.

Ah..... thanks.........but, this is Ethans house WW...........the bk9 is my favorite Becker knife. It is second to none for what it is. I've seen some amazing things done with one that was nothing short of inspiring as far as a knifemaker goes. Having said that. The M-18 is a whole new animal. You see when you get yours what I'm talking about. Its really in a different catagory than the 9 so I feel it (the 9) would be at a unfair disadvantage, and the very last thing I would ever want to do is discredit Ethan, or the bk9. Because they both kick ass. I don't wish to be compared or compete with either.

Ok i understand, i know they are in 2 different classes and everything and i love the bk9 its an amazing knife really and it hasnt failed me once but it is the best chopper i have and i love how the 9 chops. the bk9 is very very capable of chopping with out issue. But being mmy best knife to refrence the M-18 on i thought a comparative review would be good. not to say one is bad or 1 is better but solely for informational reasons. I would never want to discredit anyone or there products. i Am after all a beckerhead and spend alot of time in the becker forum because i love Ethans knives. I wouldnt take away from that. But i will not compare the bk9 to the m-18...... on the board anyway :)

Im running out of limbs that need chopping :(

too bad you gotta work tomorrow - I got SWMBO a small variable speed lathe for X-mas and built her a table for it yesterday.
gonna make some sawdust tonight and tomorrow while she's at work since I can't go to the hammock outing.
(quality control check - it would be a shame to wait until X-mas eve before finding out it doesn't work as described, right?)

It's OK, it would be like comparing a Mora to a BK2 on a bushcraft site -- totally different tools with an overlapping circle of function, nothing wrong with either.

Got some more work done on the scales. New pins tomorrow and some final sanding.

Wow Moosey. I forgot what #2 looked like. I know what you gonna say. There all the same. Well that's true. But me being the maker I know every little subtle difference and every little tweek I made on each one to make the next one a little better. (At least try anyway) I can see tiny differences on yours. Have you got any woods time with it?

I have used it some, but not as much as I would like. I used it to trim my Rose Bush here. Neighbors are odd folks, all 25 of them that can see my place. Grrrrrr!!!

I had old ladies coming out on their porches to see what I was doing. So, I put it up and went got the pruning shears. :(

I hate living urbane......

I think its good for the neighbors to be a little frightened of you.

Soooooooooooooooooooo... Interesting li'l story, apparently my old manager's boyfriend threatened to kill her tonight while they were drinking. She decided to be preemptive and ended up getting arrested. She called ME as her one call, and captain sav-a-ho hung up on her ass. I'm quite proud of this.

uhm, so she killed him? what?

I talked to Kabar and it seems there will be a care package arriving in the short while. That means I can get some contests rollin' again........

i remember care packages... haven't seen that kinda thing in ages though ;)

there is ONE item that i haven't gotten out yet, a BK5 stamped model iirc. will have to have some kinda of contest.

i'm in mind of a potential New England thing... perhaps involving a geocache? i dunno. we'll see... we'll see. no hurry though right? i have lots of free time being between jobs now, so, i'll have to come up with something magical.

Did you have pins in and removed them?
usually the pins go in with the epoxy.... glue it together as one unit. power-sand or file the pins flush with the scale, then commence shaping.

I like how you've rounded out the finger area behind the guard.

I did have pins in when I epoxied the scales on. The pins are just slightly smaller than the holes I drilled so they didn't grab well so I punched them out and I'll try to find bigger pins tomorrow.

what size holes did you drill?
holes in wood tend to contract after drilling due to the springiness in the wood.
If you drill 1/8" holes and buy 1/8" brass rod, you will likely need to sand the rod down a few thou to fit.
Sometimes the pin stock is a bit oversize too.

I think I drilled 1/8 inch holes. They could be 1/16 but in not sure. As far as the pinstock I was using they were cut down nails. I know my local ace has various pin sizes so ill try to stop down there tomorrow and find some.

they look like 1/8", given those choices. 1/16" is really skinny.
I recommend brass instead of stainless. It's much closer to the hardness of wood than SS, which will be hard to sand flush.

Just grilled a big ole ribeye. Been craving one since Guyons post, so I had to make one. Man was it good. Gf wants me to go watch breaking dawn with her in a bit, so I'm considering pounding a few beers.

Better shoot some black tar heroin for that one, amigo.

Just sayin'.

That bastid makes me hungry too. Last time he posted the Bentons BLT on toasted bread I went out imediately and bought the fixins for the fam. I'm sure it wasn't as good as Bentons but it wasn't to shabby. I think his colorfull plates have something to do with it too. Its like they have magical powers or something. I don't know about that guy! ;)

I missed my traditional one Friday beer... still at the 'office'.
Had venison chili tho, so there's that.
