prefered knive carry when backpacking

I'd be lucky if I ever saw -5 here. Zero is about as good as it gets in winter. But I've been looking for a good thick wool shirt, maybe the Filson would be overkill though.
Ah well.

Akubras are great!

There are lots of pure wool shirts on the Filson site. They have a "Jac-shirt", which is like a light jacket or a thick shirt.

I usually carry my knife on my belt, occasionally round my neck or in my pocket. It's very rare I have a backpack on !

Regarding the wool shirts take a look at Woolrich, they might not be as good as Filson (just a guess)but they seem darn good to me, hell I vitually live in mine come rain or shine and for the price they are awesome !!!;)

Usually belt.

If it's my large chopper, I made the sheath to be convertible from a drop-leg rig to pack-side attachment with molle webbing. I like having options.

I guess my question is, "do you have to have it accessible"? I like to keep a fixed blade on my "first-line" for the worse-case scenario of having to jettison your pack. I have a couple of sheaths that can be worn comfortably under the pack's waistbelt and of course a few varieties have attachable "danglers" which are even more comfortable and make your knife accessible with your pack. Another option for a smaller blade is the neck carry or using a figure-8 of cord (ala MercHarness).

I mention "accessible", because you can wear most sheaths on your pants belt and under the pack belt (unless you find out it's too uncomfortable). I wear my pistol/holster like that...not quickly accessible, but it's secure, comfortable and out of site; just another option.

I really like Walkabout's simple baldric, as you can slide it under your arm to be out of the way or move it to the front to access.

I have a couple different horizontal belt sheaths that ride just below my pack's waistbelt and they work quite well yet still allow the waistbelt to sit properly.

Lots of different options, however you really need to try some out and see what works best for you.

What blade is that? I likee!
I like to carry mine over my shoulder and under my arm in a kydex sheath, much like a purse, I guess:o. The lanyard is right near my hand and I can yank it out in a hurry. (It is usually a farmer or a OHT) I hate having it simply around my neck.
Sort of like walkabouts but nearer my pocket and hanging straight down. Walkabout, what jacket is that? This may be an expensive thread for me. :D

That's a BRKT Colonial Patch Knife, sheath by Kiah. It's a great little light duty knife.

I typically carry a smaller knife like an Izula or SAK in my pocket with a somewhat larger blade (if I really need one, lots of woodwork or game processing) in my pack. When most of my backpacking is above treeline (which is usually pretty often) I will tend to just carry the Izula.

If you want to carry a larger fixed blade on you while backpacking and need it to be accessible, I think a dangler sheath is the way to go.

My pack doesn't have a waist belt, but then it never came with one. I tis a Swiss military Alpine rucksack. It actualy carries a LARGE load very comfortably without a waistbelt due to the way it is designed.

I always keep my knife attached to my person, as well as a sporran pouch which holds survival essentials. That way if I somehow become seperated from my gear I still have at least the essentials to survive.

Often I will have my kukri attached to the pack if carrying another blade. And if I carry an axe along it is always on the pack. But the knife which is my main survival blade on the outing will always be on my person.

SAK Trekker in my front pocket and my NWA 4" Scout Tek-Locked on my pack's waistbelt. When I arrive at camp I simply unclip the lock and attach it to my belt.

Recently a Spydero Bushcraft hooked right side on a dropped rig to avoid the pack belt. This way my knife doesn't come off without my pants. I will never leave my essential blade in the pack.

I got looking and most of my packs have additional nylon webbing on them on the main padded belt which would make it rather easy to attach a knife via tec lok, molle-lok, etc

you'd have access this way (w/ the pack on)

still like the idea of the knife/kit directly on my person though

When I'm on the move, I usually have a folder in my pocket, and leave the fixed blade/saw/hatchet or whatever else I'm carring in or on the pack

It changes constantly, but I usually have a folder in my pocket, and a fixed blade or two attached to my pack somehow. What I have attached to the pack depends very much on where I'm going and what I plan to do.

As an example, for a day hike on Saturday, I had a Spyderco Sage 1 in my pocket, and a RAT RC-3 clipped sideways to the belt strap of my pack. For a snowy hammock camping trip that didn't involve a long walk a month or three ago, I had a Busse NMSFNO inside my pack, a Swamp Rat Rodent Waki strapped to the outside, and a folder in my pocket. I probably had one or two more small fixed blades in the pack too, but that's because I was planning to do some comparisons of them. Very different situations, very different carry options.

I recently picked up an AARN Body Pack, which has large front pockets for carrying your heavier gear and balancing the load. The first time I tested it, I carried a Busse SJTAC, which is a pretty beefy and heavy blade for the length, inside one of the front pockets. It carried very well there, so I'm likely to do something similar in the future.

on a hike, i'll opt for a folder or small fixed, probably in the pack...on a backpacking session, i'll probably have the zt100 in its leg rig...

Small knife in my pocket, IZULA around my neck and my RC-5 on the outside of my pack.

Not the most flattering shot of me, but you can see on my left hip I've got an Ontario RAT-7 on a baldric. It works out pretty well with the pack.

Thanks :)

I'm not sure how useful the wool coat would be in Australia! It's pretty thick... much more so than my Swanndri wool jackets. It has to be about minus 5 (C) or colder before it's not too warm to wear :)

Edit to add: PS - I am enjoying my Akubra Tablelands hat!

I wear the same Filson Cruiser, even the Forest Green color. I live in Arizona

with some wild temperature swings in fall and winter. Wool has a wide comfort range. When it's cool I wear less underneath and when it's cold I wear a wool shirt or jacket. Sorry if this is off topic, but I love this garment. Stephen

I generally carry at least two knives when backbacking, a SAK and a fixed blade. Because I tend to loose things I always carry the knives in my backpack.

Once I establish a camp spot I will quite often carry one of the knives in a sheath attached to my belt, for quick access.
