prefered knive carry when backpacking

Walkabout,

#1 Cool wool shirt

#2 Good on you for getting your daus into the woods:thumbup:

On the knife thing I usually just carry it on my belt and the pack belt goes over it. I can take unbuckle the belt if I really need it.

I do have one sheath from Koyote for a Koster of mine that has a loop on it that will put it below my pack belt I've discovered.

Before I lost my Charley May Swamp Oak I had a neat JRE sheath with a belt clip and often I would clip the knife and sheath onto the horizontal loop on the shoulder strap that the hydration hose is supposed to go under.;)

Ouch. How did you do that, HD?

Well I had it in the sheath inside my pocket which is how I carried it a lot.

I was wearing a difft sort of pants with shallower pockets and riding as a passenger in my wifes car which is small and my knees are higher than my waist in that car.

All I can figure is when I got out to move to the front when my friend got out of the front seat it had fallen out and when I opened the door it fell out. It was late and I didn't realize till the next day:thumbdn:

I used to carry an old Benchmade Panther (zytel/AUS-8 linerlock) all the time in the woods because it's so light and a good size for whatever I needed it for.

More recently I've developed an appreciation for fixed blades and have carried my Mora Triflex Craftsman or Mora 2000 because they're light, a good size and completely replaceable. The sheath on the Triflex sucks rocks, but I've got no problems with the 2000.

V'nox Hiker or Recruit in a front pocket, and lanyarded to a belt loop. Spyderco Delica or Calypso Jr. ltwt. clipped in the pocket.
If I carry a fixed blade, it's usually inside the pack, or on a compression strap.

Not the most flattering shot of me, but you can see on my left hip I've got an Ontario RAT-7 on a baldric. It works out pretty well with the pack.

lol, got the same shirt :p

I carry a smaller fixed blade(mountaineer 1) and swisschamp survival kit on my belt. I carry a JK camp knife on my pack.

I recently bought a knife from Ray Laconico and had him make a kydex sheath for horizonal cross draw carry. He uses sort of a spring clip made of kydex to attached to the belt. The clip can also attach to the strap of a backpack (right side up) for easy access with a pack on. If I take the pack off I can easily move the knife to my belt. Once on the belt it is very secure because the clip turns back to form a belt slide so it is not just held by trension. Pretty slick.

It's a good shirt. It reminds a man to give Chuck the respect he deserves.

I carry my Busse Hack in a kydex sheath on the outside of my backpack

that sounds interesting- pics by chance?

I carry iwb. If i'm carrying one of my bowies i use the frog or stud on the sheath and this has great retention and moves with you. If im carrying my busse lean mean street it also goes iwb with the on scene tactical g clip. iwb makes for my edc too. Just never found the need to do it differently in the woods.:o

I carry an ESEE-3 on the shoulder strap of my maxpedition kodiak, verticle so all I have to do is yank down to get it out in a hurry. inside the pack, I have the ESEE-6, a leatherman pulse, a SAK rucksack, and a cheap folder. In my pocket I mostly carry my BM Grip, and on my neck, a custom wharny 3 finger necker.

When backpacking, I carry a SAK in my right front pocket with some kind of folder (Usually a Large Ritter Grip when I'm in the woods). I have a medium (4"-5") fixed blade in a side pouch on my Gregory, the axe/hatchet gets tucked behind there. I usually have a Victorinox Spirit tucked in the same pocket as the fixed blade. I don't see much use for anything bigger than a pocket knife while you are actually hiking.

The Wilderness Safepacker is always slung over my shoulder with my Sig P239 and two reloads in it...

At camp, the fun stuff comes out:

Here's how I carry mine. I slide the knife around more towards the back; it usually isn't very visible:

That's slick. I might have to steal that idea.

I carried a 30 pound pack on a 6 mile hike with a Swamp Rat Howling in a kydex sheath on one hip and a 4 inch 686 on the right and I can say I didn't notice it interfere with my hip belt at all. So, give it a try it might wok okay. My only thing was that I would have to undo the belt to use either. But for carry, it's better than leaving it in my pack IMO.

I just stick a Mora in the pack and keep my jackknife or Neckmuk in a pocket.

I'm not very hardcore, though :P

Folder or small fixed blade in one of my front pockets, or one in each, depending how I feel. Medium fixed blade on my right hip, or in my pack, depending where I am, usually on the hip though. Hatchet or saw, or kukri(rarely), in my pack. Riding on the hip doesn't really interfere with my pack belt.
