Preferences/Pet Peeves

I've had a question in my head recently..... I've been afraid to ask?
This might the right place with a good number, the well of knowledge.... :D

There is a certain "look" some makers have.
It's a crafted/handmade look. It must be.
Makers who use fancy machines, and CNC's don't seem to have the look.

i don't wanna call out any makers necessarily(i can but rather not), but I love that style...... I wonder if there is a name for that genre? What's that style called???

It always looks like a retro look. 80's and older looking even if it was made today

*fixed blade styles, I'm referring to

Simple initially in design, but the beauty is in the function.
often with paper micarta, or North American woods

Dated....... yet timeless. I think it's classy.
That's interesting. Could you plz post a pic of an example?

The more “complicated” a knife design is, the less I like it. A lot of “modern style” knives have way too much going on, aesthetically, for me. It’s a 100% subjective preference, I just like “simpler” looking aesthetics.
I watched a video of new customs knives that KnifeCenter has in stock. I thought each one was ugly. Everything has to be crazy colors and crazy handle shapes which offer nothing.

My biggest pet peeve is restaurants that don't serve dark beer ;)

With knives...I'm personally not a fan of deep carry clips. I do understand why many prefer them, and I don't mind it too much when they're executed well for a particular knife (the Adamas comes to mind), but for the most part I try to avoid knives that have them as the only option. I like a bit of my knife sticking out of the pocket, just personal preference.

I’m wearing my mini Adamas this week and I’ve noticed it is somewhat difficult to retrieve with the deep carry clip. Micarta (slick) handles not helping.

Would this be an example of a ridiculously large finger choil? If so, I like it! It might be one of the most comfortable knife handles I have had the pleasure of using.

I don’t believe this is a choil. It is stil kind of part of the handle.

Nah, I think that’s good in my book. A ridiculous choil awkwardly “eats up” some cutting edge and doesn’t give me a decent 4 finger hold unless I use the choil.

I've only had the full size (G10) which seems to ride a little less deep, but yes, that's exactly why I don't like them.

My dislike for deep carry clips stems from the time when they first seemed to explode in popularity, with every knife reviewer on YouTube seeming to call for them on every knife and loudly applauding them when they came standard. I felt like it was a situation where a loud minority had a significant influence in driving the trend, solving a problem that didn't exist for many while causing another (namely ease of retrieval). Furthermore, I have a particular disdain for the reasoning often used for preferring deep carry, which was to not offend those who would clutch their pearls a the sight of a knife. I know that's not the only reasoning, and I do understand that there are some environments where deep carry is more appropriate, but the idea of catering to people who use their irrational fear to judge others by what they choose to possess rather than their actions just doesn't sit right with me.

Again though, just personal preference. I would never want to lump everyone who prefers deep carry with those who use the above reasoning, it was just a reasoning often cited by proponents. In the end I believe we should all carry whatever we finds works best for ourselves. Also, I don't think there are any absolutes when it comes to things like this, there are always exceptions IMO.

Since that cut-out is on the ricasso: I don't know if it qualifies as a choil.
They're supposed to be part of the blade.

Naw, check your own post #55: The ricasso is an unsharpened part of the blade forward of the guard/handle. That particular knife just suffers from too short handle scales which do not extend to/form part of the guard. It does, however, feature a small sharpening choil/notch.

My name is Kyle and I hate choils. Why ruin a perfectly useful knife with a big choil ? No choils bigger than 3/16 please.

Thank you for letting me share.
