Premiere and Pre-order of the new blade is NOW!!!

Eric,

I think this could unintionally go unsaid, but is probably very much appreciated subconsciously by most around here:

THANKS FOR OFFERING PRE-ORDERING!!!!

Personally, I am sick of the stress and madness associated with the other F5 / GO GO GO - STAMPEDE THE TROUGH madness type of ordering.

There are so many benefits to pre-ordering including not having to put your life on hold for unknown number of hours camped out at your computer while stressing over upcoming orders.

Not having the scalpers screwing over regulars.

And many more benefits to the regular fans and Swamp Rat supporters around here.

Thanks!

.

Big +1 on that!

I've never been able to buy a new Busse, SW, or SY knife for that exact reason. It's actually really annoying to me that a knife company would sell knives in a way taht would restrict the buyers so severely and allow the scalping that so frequently takes place. Anyway, sorry for the rant. I really appreciate being able to preorder a knife from you guys!

Eric,
Will you offer a sheath to go with it?
Marc

I was just about to ask the same thing. It would be nice if a sheath was available at the same time as the knives.

RE: 154CM vs ATS-34. If my memory is correct, Bob Loveless was one of the first to use 154CM to make knives. The steel was developed to make the drive shafts in 747 engines. At the time, it was only available in round bar stock and had to be forged flat. I'm not sure of the time line, but I believe that ATS-34 came later and is the Japanese version of 154CM. (Disclaimer. As usual, I am probably wrong.)

5/11 minus 4/23 is. . . 19 days. Seems like 4-6 weeks already.

This may make me forget the SAR5. Dangit. It's what I'd consider doing to the SAR5 to make it a bit less butt-heavy.

The more I look at it, the prettier it gets.

Another sheath question: Will this fit a leather HRLM sheath?

This is a dumb question: are 154CM and CPM154 the same steel?

ATS-34 - 154-CM: The hottest high-end stainless right now. 154-CM is the original American version, but for a long time
was not manufactured to the high quality standards knifemakers expect, and so is not used often anymore. Late-breaking
news is that high-quality 154-CM may again be available. ATS-34 is a Hitachi product that is very, very similar to
154-CM, and is the premier high quality stainless. Normally hardened to around 60 Rc, it holds an edge very well and is
tough enough even at that high hardness. Not quite as rust resistant as the 400 series above. Many custom makers use
ATS-34, and Spyderco (in their high-end knives) and Benchmade are among the production companies that use it.

154CM

Carbon: 1.05%
Chromium: 14.00%
Manganese: 0.50%
Molybdenum: 4.00%

This stainless steel was developed as an improved version of 440C.
It has been overshadowed by CPM154 which has a similar composition
and is made using particle metallurgy.

CPM-154

Carbon: 1.05%
Chromium: 14.00%
Manganese: 0.50%
Molybdenum: 4.00%
Vanadium: ?.??%

CPM154 may be the best balanced stainless steel currently available.
It is easy to finish and sharpen. It also holds an edge well.

Other observations drooling over our single photo:

1. Squared butt vs. the HRLM. Probably inspired by the SAR project.

2. No way 4-6 weeks with Blade 08 coming up. Figure late July. :( ;)

3. I like the shallow but wide choil. Reminiscent of the original HR.

4. A bit smaller in the blade-size than a HRLM - but I don't think that will detract a whole lot. In between a HRLM and a GW in blade size it appears.

5. I love that blade shape. What's that spine look like?? Rounded?

COME ON - WE NEED MORE PIX ERIC!!!!!

It said the payment was due in 4-6 weeks. Who knows if the knife will be done that soon. One thing I've noticed is that Swamp Rat is pretty good about getting their knifes out in a timely manner.

Hi,

Nice knife.

I have a Chopweiler with micarta slabs. What's the difference between the G10 and micarta?

Thank you.

Thank you JerkeeJoe. A lot of people seem to prefer G10 than Micarta for a knife handle. Do you know why? More resistant?

Coupchoux,
Canada.

G-10 can have a smoother overall appearance, feel, and finish. This depends on whether it is shaped and smoothed or just a slab though, and even the standard slabs come in several varieties of surface texture. Micarta is iirc technically a little less wear resistant but the average user is not going to destroy either one, maybe just wear it down a little. Micarta is usually made with linen, canvas, or paper, and the final finish really depends on which one is used, how it was machined, and also bead blasting the scales can really even out the texture. If you look at Busse Micarta scales vs Swamp Rat scales you will see a few differences in appearance and finish.

On a larger working blade like a chopweielr I prefer the canvas/linen micarta scales because they provide a nice grippy surface. For smaller blades I prefer G-10.
