And thanks for saying that while continuing to promote your product without the proper membership level.

You brazenly ignoring the rules of this community that you agreed to abide by when you registered has changed my opinion of the maker you do PR for from " indifferent" to "strong negative." And that is without taking your comedic overpricing into account.

Same goes for you.... Don't wanna step on your nuts either!

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It's a new membership so, as I mentioned before, similar information will be handled differently as well as looking in to the proper membership level.

Are these full custom knives made personally by McClung or mid-tech production knives?

Quotes from his website:

All Mad Dog™ Knives are hand made by Kevin “Mad Dog” McClung, now at the VIM Knife Facility in Utah. McClung has full artisan control over his production, craftsmanship and materials

Mad Dog™ Knives should not be confused with factory or machine made knives. Mad Dog™ Knives are individually hand made in Utah utilizing all American made materials. Each Mad Dog™ knife is entirely hand ground and hand finished by the maker himself, so production is extremely limited

This photo was taken last week behind the new VIM Facility in rural Utah, as seen through the Shop window where Mad Dog makes his knives. You may be on to something there! Word is, Kevin amputated their horns, ground and snorted them :cheerful:

Why are they so expensive?

They are so expensive because there are people that pay those insane prices for a piece of coated O-1, G-10 and kydex. People with working brains ask questions like yours and spend that money else where. :)

I had a mad Dog knife several years ago. It was a great knife that proved itself time after time as one of the better actual use knives (as opposed to safe queens). It held an edge, sharpened to scary sharp easily and took a beating and kept on ticking.

But the prices, OMG!!!!!

Kevin needs to stop adding Platnum to the steel to make them more affordable.

As to the "politics" surrounding the owner, that was never any of my business. I collect and use knives, the behind the scenes fighting makes me nauseous.

Its a free market system, the man can charge whatever he wants. Clearly he feels there are people out there who will pay the prices. I have seen MDs sell for extraordinary sums of money so obviously there is interest. From what I understand they are very popular in the far east. As always, it's a question of supply and demand. I'm not sure why this business of pricing always comes up. Only you can decide whether you feel they are worth it or not. It's all relative at the end of the day.

It's baffling for sure. That's why I believe his market is elsewhere. Anyone who is a member of bladeforums and has read a bit about knives and what they cost would have the sense to look elsewhere.

That it is sir, and when a maker charges so much that the free market system looks elsewhere, the maker then reduces his prices or looks elsewhere for another market, hence the Far East.

I enjoyed my MD knife. It was a gift and when I decided to sell it the Giftor advised what price range I should ask. I thought he was on drugs when he suggested four figures.

So I did and the knife sold in seconds, with a couple of people E-mailing me and offering more than the selling price. There are die hard fans of mad dog, make no mistake.

Not me, a knife in the Mad Dog ranges need to say Loveless for me to consider buying another...........................or be a Bowie made by Nick Wheeler!!!!!!!

As was mentioned in this thread there were big in Asia with the rich, airsoft nansy boys. They all jump about with brand new DPM uniforms, molle vests and the like usually with a spanking new Mad-Dog or Strider fixed blade on them.
They are not knife people and just want something else expensive so they look even cooler, it's very much the done thing here. Those knives will never be used and are just part of the airsoft douche uniform. Quite a fitting end for them actually :p
