Price Increase for Benchmade and Spyderco Coming?

The more minimum wage goes up around the nation the more prices will reflect that. It may not be by alot but some items will be.
Gas prices for transport on raw material, finish product, to retail is a major one. It all adds up and has to be picked up somewhere.

I've already stopped buying the thread title company knives since a few years back, ...
It's silly how much the pricing has inflated... sorry I'm not paying nearly $200 for a g10 handled s30v blade.

They really are getting to the price point where customs are on par, and a far better value.
In some ways I'm glad they are pricing themselves out of the popular market, the BF blade smiths should see an increase in sales as a result.

My opinion is that the scare of price increases is a sales scare tactic. Don't fall for it; you'd just be enabling them to gouge us a bit more each year.

If I want a knife, I decide if I want it badly enough to pay the current asking price, whatever that price may be. If not, then I look used. If not, there are always lower priced alternatives (and of good quality, too) to Spyderco and Benchmade.

Well they aren't going to go down. Nothing does. Try pricing out a new pick up these days.

the only thing that doesn't go up is my pay check :(

Im quickly getting priced out of the hobby and have started contemplating lower end knives. Looking for those sleepers that are a big bang for your hard earned buck . Trying to stay American made but its getting more and more difficult

Don't forget good ol' Buck. You can get a G10-handled, S30V-bladed buck for under $90. (Vantage Pro) Good quality, too. Kershaw has a better action than Buck for the money, but styling is hit or miss and their blade steels don't seem to be on par, for the designs I like.

Ever since the MAP price changes, the price increases on these two brands have been quite a bit higher than the annual 2% inflation rate. Changes the whole landscape of looking for good buys.

There is no way Spyderco can sell all of their products at the price they are asking . The proof is in how many knives have been discontinued since they have gone to MAP . The only way they stay in business is by bringing new product every year and that they do but at the current prices it’s going to be hard to sell .

And let’s not forget we are about a year away from paying sales tax .

Even Mid-Techs are getting more expensive.

Years back, you could a Reate for around $200, even less...the exact same materials.

Strider, CKF, and others have experienced the same.

It's terrible. Most of it is just greed.

Nothing new to see here. It's called inflation. Prices on EVERYTHING are going to go up as time goes by. Question is, are you passionate enough about your hobby, whatever it is, to stay in it? These are knives, I also have a gun/shooting/reloading hobby that's way more expensive than knives. Guess what? Those prices ain't goin' down either. We'll all complain about price increases, but still buy. We're just gluttons for punishment.

I was away from the pickup market for about 16 years or until I had a fender bender and my little dependable Toyota PU was considered totaled due to its value (it was 20 years old at that point). Wife and I discussed our options and we decided to buy a new (versus our usual 4-5 year old PU). I was in for major sticker shock. Prices essentially doubled. The prices are frightening and even more so when you look at the better equipped model versions.

Knife prices are not something I worry about in the grand scheme of things. Oh, I make comments that I won't buy or consider this or that due to price. But when it really comes down to it (MAP or not), if I like the knife well enough and if there is a reasonable need/serious want, I'll buy anyway. I just try to reduce the numbers somewhat now. But still stay in the game.

The costs of materials goes up to the manufacturers. Labor goes up. Manufacturers cannot and will not just eat the increases. We're lucky the price doesn't go up in random times of the year. Most wait until the beginning of the new year. The buck 110 was 27.88 2 years ago with nylon sheath. Today it's 34.88 but includes a leather sheath. Not much of an increase despite the sheath upgrade and made in USA.

Back in the 70's and when I first really considered something larger than a regular slip joint, I considered the cost of the Buck 110 to be high. Generally speaking, I was not a Buck knife fan due to the hardness of their blades and being a pain in the butt to sharpen. I went with a Schrade 250T instead of the Buck. It cost about $20-$24 then and I was questioning whether I should have spent the money. My Case slippies cost that much....

Always enjoy thinking about the story behind the 250T acquisition back then.... I was in Laredo Texas and eating most meals in restaurants. Ran into the Schrade salesman at a 24 hr restaurant and after chatting, I got the 250T and never regretted buying it. I had absolutely no idea if the price was good or bad. I just knew that I needed a slightly larger knife for work and used it as my deer hunting/woods knife for years. For my needs, it was a great knife. It was so great that I bought a new USA one (at a show) a couple years ago just for the memories that knife brought back.

Manufacturers depend on increasing prices as generally their cost to do business increases over time. We pay the price. If the buying public starts to believe their products are over priced, eventually they fail as a manufacturer or they have to make some drastic changes. Schrade failed. Camillus failed.

DLT already has the newer BM Grips w/s30v steel for $119. The handles are still the same, just with s30v steel in them now. Things go up in prices each year, we can thank inflation for that.

Edit never mind I see em

Yup got too expensive for me. I stick to used knives now. The forum’s exchange, flea markets, the bay, the list, etc. The thrill of the hunt and fixing up a used knife has become part of the fun.

Both BladeHQ and Knife Center are offering some great free shipping deals and giving gift cards, so it's a good time to buy something you need or just want.
