Price Increase for Benchmade and Spyderco Coming?

Just picked up a mini grip 555hg in yellow. The hollow ground in 154cm is being discontinued. Got it for $77 on knifeworks. Maybe my new plan will be wait till this time of year and see what knives are being discontinued and purchase those.

That’s what I do.

Not for 100% of my knife purchases, but most of my knives have been bought during Black Friday or Canadian Boxing Day (Dec 26) sales.

I bought a Titanium Military (discontinued) from a Canadian retailer for about $160USD earlier in the week. Would have been well over $200US prior to the sale.

Unless I have to have a specific knife, I wait until Nov/Dec for the deals.

So, if I preordered a knife off Bladehq, for example, and it was X dollars but I just paid the $5 to preorder it, will I pay the price it was when I preordered it for or the new MAP price in 2019 when it finally releases?

My understanding of a preorder is that it is an agreement between a customer and a dealer that the former will pay x for an item y. Therefore the dealer should honor the price when that agreement is made.

The more interesting question is what if the price drops?

I find quite interesting what people dont mind paying 1k for disposable phone what will last 1-2 years , but paying 100-300 for good knife what will last you a life time is too much ?
I guess knife not considered important tool any more.

Have you read the news on the new IPhone . They are not selling Apple is giving out big insensitive to buy their phone . They have cut back on manufacturing because people are OK with the Phone they have and don’t want to spend 1k . I believed the phone bubble is bursting . People’s realize that they don’t need a new Phone every two years just because it has 1or2 new features.

most people in this forum don’t just buy 1or2 knife a year.

I agree. this seems to be my new plan also.

The folks who are willing to pay $1k for a phone are perhaps not the same folks who are paying $100-300 for a knife. Different strokes for different folks.

Very few knives I purchase brand-new/full price. Most I wait til clearance (or a special at KSF, etc.) or pick up off the exchange. Only brand new purchases for me have been midtechs or sprints.

I got a 15yr old flip phone I got for free..:D And my knife spending limit is under 100.00 these days..;)Never in my 60yrs did I spend more than 200.00 on a knife..:D

Interesting point. I pretty much refuse to pay $1000 for a cell phone. You know the brands that are priced in the $700 > $1000 area.... The only way I would pay that is IF there was no other choice available. I am luke warm on the $400+ folders regardless of their utility and pride of ownership.

Or a coke habit, a few hands of blackjack, a good bottle of Bordeaux, a wagu beef steak, an expensive pair of jeans, a good night out at the bar, etc, etc.

To each their own, but in a few years my $200 knife will be worth at least something if I ever want to sell it.

That's a damn good point!!!!

I finally broke down after having a previously owned beat up used iphone 5 and bought an Iphone 6 off the auction site for $150. didn't even want to spend $300 for an iphone 7 let alone a 10X!!! yet everyone around me has the 10X . I am considering going back to a flip phone . and I have also found as has been mentioned already better value for my dollar in the custom knife maker venue . Not necessarily contracting to have a specific knife made but rather watching and waiting for something to be made and offered for sale in a place like BF or some other site.

You can always take up a hobby that puts something in your PayPal. Or mow lawns for 25 each. A couple weeks you could have enough cash to buy that CRK knife you wanted but the budget wouldn't allow. Sell some crap you've had stashed away. Have a yard sale, There are multiple ways to generate a couple hundred bucks.

I have never broke the $200 ceiling. I think $160 is the most I've ever paid.

However, there are few knives that cost over two bills that I think I could enjoy.

I have been perusing some of the online retailers to see if there are going to be any last minute end of the year sales, but it seems to be the opposite. BladeHQ and Knife Center both have advertised last chance to get 2018 pricing suggesting there will be a price increase. Do you guys think that the price increase will be significant or will there be one at all? I've been in the market for a 940-02, and can't decide if I want to pull the trigger or possibly wait for a new model to come oro to drop the price of the G10 models. What's your opinion?
Most retailers try whatever they can to reduce inventory at the end of the year for tax reasons. ;)

Anyone trading their phones in after one or two years has WAY more disposable income than I do. I try to get at least four years out of a phone.
Knives last a lifetime.

They last until they break for the most part..... My cell phone cost me about $20 at Walmart new. Works just fine. Don't care if I have the latest and greatest smart phone. Same applies to knives although I do pay attention to what is being offered in the market.
