Price increases blown out of proportion?

To me, that is definately worth $219. Very cool knife.

I would preorder one right now if I wasn’t worried about it ending up in a Canadian Border guard’s pocket.

I'm also very eager for this model becoming available, but I had to make a correction to your post because this Lum model is NOT even available for preorder as you post suggests!

P.S. maybe that's why Danke42 said what he said!

Thx

I like the folding Lum tanto (but never got got the jade thing. I must be the only one, as they seem very popular).

Id like the folder to go with my Lum tanto;

.....also would like a Lil' Lum.

Its a friggin' addiction!

I really want a fixed Lum Tanto reissue in CPM154 (or better) and polished black G10 handles to go with my Darn Daos.

The burgundy paperstone was the one, I wanted (even though there seems to have been some issues with these scales).

IMO the burgundy looks even better than the other version.

The scales looks great and are in fine condition on my Lum tanto.

Im okay with 'super steels' but I most certainly also like VG10 and am fine with it (never understood the (slightly silly) snobbery in regards to dissing VG10 (not saying you are)).

VG10 works.

Big fan of the Spyderco-Perrins in VG10 as well, of which I have several.

In use, the VG10 knives are awesome.

All in all the Lum tanto is a winner in my book. A great knife and as mentioned; Id very much like the Lum tanto folder and the Lil' Lum.

Ahhh. Got it. :)

I'm glad I got the knives I did last year before the increase of both MAP percentage and MSRP, but I may still buy Spyderco products when the price seems worth it to me.

One factor that may influence my future purchases is quality of materials. Thus far I've been buying knives with steels of interest to me -- CTS-XHP, LC200N, M390 -- and although many of the new designs unveiled at SHOT Show are compelling, now that we've seen prices, I wonder if I want to pay $160-170+ for knives with S30V steel. I don't mean to knock S30V, and I'm far from a steel expert. I just mean I can get S30V on a variety of less expensive knives, and it would be nice to see perhaps more premium offerings at least as options if the prices are going up, anyway.

Same with handle materials: some of the traditional high-value models (e.g., FRN Delica 4) don't seem as great a deal as the prices rise.

One thing I like about MAP enforcement is that price can largely be taken out of the decision when comparing retailers -- at least the online stores. I'd prefer to deal with a group of reputable retailers with good service records, and I like that I can presume that a lot of them offer Spydercos at roughly the same price.

Because it's not a "flipper", because I"ve ordered other knives from Blade HQ without hassle, because if there was a seizure you receive a notice and an option to return to sender.

I try not to focus on stuff that's never going to happen.

Sal Glesser Sal Glesser a question in regards to MAP as I understand it in general MAP only limits what is openly visible and search able so if a site/vendor has a way to not show or advertise the price they can sell below MAP correct? I am not advocating that vendors just start hiding all thier prices for your or anyones products but I can think of a select vendor and reasons for a vendor to use such methods. If I am correct I think vendors taking advantage of those select reasons or circumstances of how the vendor may operate it would help alleviate some peoples issues and/or concerns with MAP.

Hi Pirate,

Your analysis is essentially correct. Anyway we look at it, it's a compromise. We do our best. If one takes a step back and try to look at the big picture, it makes more sense.

Minimum Advertised Price

So Sal, are coupons and "add to cart for price" once again open game?

Many dealers used to have coupon codes and have special prices once added to cart. Will you enforced MAP prices on vendors who start doing that again?

I have a feeling there is a gentleman's agreement involved here, otherwise... theres no reason for the best priced dealers to not do what they always did for years and years.

Sooo...it's not really MAP is it.

S Stays Sharp thats essentially what I am getting at which is something I see often just rarely see with knives but it would be nice to have options to snag some "great deals" the vendors don't need to and probably shouldn't run it like that all the time unless that vendor only sells in batches as they get them ie MassDrop.

Why would the vendors sell them at below they are the ones who asked for the increase .

Companies use coupons and deals all the time to bring in customers. They hope they'll buy something else or remember their name and shop there the next time.

Spyderco is in the business to make money, they make a good product. They can charge whatever people are willing to pay.

When every other thread on the Spyderco forum is "DID I BUY A FAKE", that's a sign Spyderco may be charging too much where MANY people will knowingly take the risk of buying a fake at lower prices from questionable sites.

I also would not take Sal's words as gospel, I happen to read one of his posts many years ago (ca be Google if anyone's interested)where he talked about how China is able to sell knives for low low prices because the exchange rate is 1 to 7, therefor they are artificially depressing their currency 7 times. Really Sal? By that same logic many African countries are depressing their currency by tens of thousands folds. Sal make great knives but he's also in the business of making Spyderco survive and profit, I wouldn't take everything he says like the God given truth so many fan boys seems to do. After all, self interest trumps all in business and if you think other wise you are more idealistic than the average joe.
