Price increases blown out of proportion?

Generally speaking I think the cost of much of Spyderco's catalog is now getting to be expensive....on the other hand, I don't know how you import skilled production items from Japan and virtually hand-made ones from Taiwan, as well as manufacture more and more high quality knives in the United States, and introduce thoughtful, innovative designs and materials, backed by a stellar warranty, produced by happy folks who are treated well and paid a living wage.....and not charge a premium price.

I totally understand Spyderco (and other companies) have to make money and prices will increase. However, just yesterday I was browsing the 3 online dealers I usually buy from. I was a bit blown away by the pricing of a lot of the Spydies. I will not be buying anything additional Spyderco this year. Just too big of a hike for my wallet.

I feel the same way.

Here is a quick breakdown... Obviously there are many models I don't have listed. I just don't consider most of these a good deal anymore.

Spyderco Pricing

———————————

Model - 2017 - 2018

Chaparral FRN - $80 - $87 - (still good deal)

Sliverax - $150 - $167

Shaman - $150 - $181

Salt 2 - $83 - $90 - (still good deal)

Sage 5 - $137 - $150

Para 2 (black blade) - $137 - $150

Military (black blade) - $167 - $187

The Shaman main one I am put off by but I was also never terribly interested in it myself I would maybe reevaluate some but most aren't on my list or the change already hasn't knocked it off my list. I will be looking more for exclusives and sprint runs than for production models.

A related question how is Spyderco's direct pricing when at a show ie Blade Show?

Each person is different, but we all have a point in which we say 'naaah'. At $150 I was really looking at the Shaman. At $180, it is now priced out of my interest. Hopefully there are more people that still really want it, otherwise Spyderco will have to discontinue or lower the price.

For me, the entire market is getting blown way up price wise. I'm going back to basics and searching for really awesome knives that are under $100. There are still tons out there, just not as many with Spyderco, BM, or ZT. Other companies are picking up the slack, and so we continue this ebb and flow.

I definitely understand the way you feel. Always hate to lose an old friend.

Dunno about you guys but I like to buy quality. I'm supporting spyderco because of it. I like other knives and brands too.

I'll continue to buy quality from quality manufacturers. But one thing is for sure is of my collection of many spyderco has to be the most used and loved and that's due to the quality... As well as being a company that strives for thin behind the edge slicing tools. Long development times to make it well worth the releases as things are tweaked until first release... But cqi makes it even better from community input. The values of this company is proven and trustworthy.

Spyderco vs anything else? I vote quality and I'll support that. I tend to buy sprint runs over standard versions though. But if the quality is there price doesn't matter. I'd not buy vg10 for those prices though so I can see some complaints but the quality is there and those models are attractive tools.

For myself, the recent price hike was enough not only to stop using and purchasing a lot of Spyderco models, but stop recommending them also. I mean, knives like the Delica, a knife I used to recommend all day long, now passes the 100 dollars mark in Canada; we are talking about a mass produced, sub 3" VG10 bladed lockback with a plastic handle that is made overseas... sorry but no... just no.
For years people mentioned the "butterfly tax" when speaking of knives from a competing company, well, I'm afraid now the term "spider tax" will start to appear.

Sorry you feel that way Floatingby. As we've discussed before, only Chinese manufacture will give us an opportunity to lower prices because the Chinese unfairly devalue their Yuan. Try to purchase a coffee pot, blender or washing machine made in the US or Canada for that matter. A 6/1 Yuan is a 3rd world country dollar value....for a country that puts people in space and builds island in the sea?

I guess "fair" is an American word.

When everything is made in China (almost there now) many will be ....?

sal

The US made Manix2, PM2 and others are great values.
There is still competitive manufacturing in the US and Spyderco is a good example.

What do you recommend instead now that's made in Japan with a super steel and composite handles for less than $100 CD?

Dealers are their main customer now. End users only purpose is to get feedback from them on the forums and knife shows on what will sell.

MAP is price fixing if we want to talk about China price fixing. I am always ok with Spyderco making more on their knives but dealers who cant sell their knives will have MAP at 15% soon enough if people keep supporting it.

Online sales is NOW. You will not bring back JC Penneys and knife stores in this country by price fixing and penalizing end users.

It's funny how often people call MAP price fixing. It's not price fixing. Look up what that term means. Price fixing is illegal. It's when competitors collude to set pricing.

It’s even funnier when MAP is used as a form of price fixing instead of Minimum ADVERTISED Price and dealers are supposedly able to still sell product at any price they want when they clearly cannot (especially online). So much for free market.

National Knives sells lower than MAP.

But that's not price fixing either. Maybe this will help -
