Probably asked before cannot find it, tempering 440c steel in home oven.

Allright 2 questions:
Can somebody tell me with what kind of grit i can compare this wax with?

And with what grit do I sand the Micarta handles?

Thanks John, yeah I couldn't find anything about that wax either.
Thanks for trying to find it.

Any advice on the Micarta?
What do you think of the dagger so far?

Semper Fi!
Barry

Looks good so far, The rounder you make the handle the better the micarta will look, you will get better contrast between the layers, if you decide to buff the handle, make sure to use a clean wheel and the gray compound, otherwise anything dark will soak into the fiber mat and create dark spots, also i would recommend using a sanding stick of some type when you get close to the final shape, this will smooth any dips and dives

I must have missed it. What was the heat treatment that you did on your Roman?

Bo T,
I haven't send it yet for HT, I want to make 2 more knives so I can
Send more knives instead of one for the same price.
I just (almost) finished the handle and than that Roman is done, I am going to make
2 more Stamina2's.
I liked the dagger to make it but it almost takes me
Twice as long than a Stamina.
Not that I am in a hurry (not at all) but I think I need to be
Proviciant in making those first before I can
Make a Roman
Not that this Roman is bad, (maybe for some experts) I think it
Turned out good for a first attempt,
But I can do better, I know I can.

But I will update very thing I do, also when they go for HT.
And I will order new steel soon, this will be wider steel
Than this 440C that I have and it will be 1084 so I can make
A Stamina1 and so I can HT myself in my forge.

Semper Fi, Barry.

All right it has been quite for a while, busy at work and other stuff.
I made My second stamina an i need to finish the handel but i just wantend to post a picture of it.
After this one i am going to make another one and than they Will be send for HT.
I didn't do much on the dagger. But that Will be send for HT as well.

So here is My second Stamina.

So, you're going to have them heat treated with the handles on?

No.., of course not.
they are not glued on yet, i will take those off and make new brass pins once they come back from HT.
is this wrong than?
that i make it in this order.

It's not wrong. It just seemed that you were going to finish the handles first.

All right took a while but the blades have been send for HT
So now I am thinking of ordering new steel.
1084? 1085? 1090?
Something I can HT myself in my forge.
Anybody advise on this?
And if you do have an opinion, please do tell me
Where I can order that steel.

I was gone for a while, duty called.

Semper Fi,

1084 is your best bet if you are using a forge to do your heat treat. You can order it from Aldo at new jersey steel baron

Thanks, Shane....
Why is 1084/1085 so hard to come by?
And @ New Jersey steel a bar of 1084 is 230$ but I don't need a 48" piece 24" would be more than enough.
Isn't there a place where I can can get shorter pieces?
And when I see a bar of steel somewhere it I says for example: 3/16"x 1-1/2"x 12".... I am a metric guy, but what is the 3/16"? Thickness? And how many millimeter is that same for 1-1/2" is that width?
I want thick & wide steel.
The 440C that I had was ok but it might be a little bit thicker and wider...( it was: 3/16" x 1-1/2" x 12")

And why do people say that 1084 is easier than 1080? Isn't 1080 created to replace 1084? Less? More? Carbon, and how does less or more effect the steel, and HT it?
Any advise and comments please, but Barney style please

Semper Fe,
Barryblade?

You need to look at Aldo's pricing again. You would have to buy a mighty big piece to spend $230!

Thank you Shane, i did that and I know now how much mm it is....so the first number is thickness, second number is width and third number is length.

And Bill I will have another look, but that is all i could find a 48" piece for 230$

but I will look again.
