I have a knifemaker contacting my customers when he sees them buy a knife in the exchange and derride them for buying my knives. It is infuriating, and I feel helpless to stop it since it is all being done privately. One of my customers sent me a copy of his message. Have you guys ever experienced this? What I find ironic is that the maker in question is one that I consider to be above my skill level (most everyone is). So why bother with lowly me, a mere apprentice, and not even smelling journeyman level. (IMHO) Now, there is some history. This knifemaker got pissy with me because I wouldn't share the secret of 3D Spalted Steel with him. He wasn't polite in his innitial hissy fit, and I wasn't polite back.

I've never experienced behavior like this in the knife community. Also, as I don't really see recourse, I know I just need to accept it and move on, but it is really infuriating, so I thought I'd share.

Wow man that sucks. Maybe let us know who is doing it and after people berate him enough he'll stop. Not sure of legal recourse. Good luck.

Wow, that's just plain odd.

Seems to me he would realize that it's going to make HIM look bad to your customers (if they had been potential customers of his) and it sounds like he has too much time on his hands if he's following around your customers to email them like that.  :thumbdn:

My thoughts are to call him out on it (just you and him) and if he keeps it up then post it here.

I've already done my reactionary bashing of this particular guy in the appropriate public forum, so I don't want this to be about that. Plus he hasn't hurt sales so far. I'll pass on giving the name.

Well, I initially tried to communicate with him, but he refused to read my messages, so communication is not possible. That was months ago, and I don't save PM's. Actually, I've never posted anyone's PM publicly. I was glad my customer brought it to my attention though.

First what is "3D Spalted Steel " show me a pic, sounds cool

and

Forward to a mod or Spark and have him stop that foolishness, or be banned.

Perhaps if the knifemaker in question would spend his time improving upon his skill and technique rather than stalking your customers, he wouldn't need your trade secrets. Its a shame is what it is...... BTW, your humble statement regarding the issue was done with the poise and humility of a true gentelman. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations, it sounds like you have a stalker! LOL!

That kind of behavior has to be against some rule on BF. I imagine someone could get banned for that.

Personally, I'd list his name. He'll likely make a fool of himself, and never be heard from again.

*Edit*

I remember who you're talking about now. He's just jealous and immature.

Well I guess what I suggested did seem like a bad idea after I thought about it. Contacting the Mods might be a good way to handle it. But someone needs to mediate it if he won't respond to you. That definitely is bad business. And you do seem to be handling it appropriately. Good luck.

That's just sad. I tend to agree with some of the above suggestions. You can't make an irrational person rational through being rational. You can however expose him for he is and more than likely embarrass him out of here. I'm sorry you're going through this. I look up to you and your work. If you need some wedgies dished out, let me know. :D

I'm with them. name names and make this fool feel the pain for what he has done. (read in Mr. T voice.)

This is the action of someone insecure, envious and jealous. It is not the act of someone comfortable in their own skin and I would suggest that in the mind of this person he does not see himself as above your skill level at all. Actions speak and the actions here indicate desperation and/or desire to get even which are both acts of an immature spirit. Perhaps we should feel sorry for this person and ask that universe present him with wisdom to rise above such deeds.

Don't let such things as these sway your focus my friend. Stay on course and shine your light. I guarantee his is dimmer than yours proven by his actions.

Send him a link to this thread. Unless he is prepared for the dogpiling that can occur he probably will stop, or at least use a fake name and email to continue his obsession with you.

Keeping it classy!!! That's awesome. Congratulations on your humility and convictions. You my friend are obviously enjoying your life.

Just means your good at what you do and others are taking notice. Kudos to you for rising above it!

I know a big name maker who jumped all over a friend of mine for making a style of knife that the big maker didn't think he should be. It got kind of looney, really. Some folks equate being "big" with being "right".

Knife making is like any other community, we've got our share of weirdos. Becoming as high profile as you have as quickly as you have, you're probably making some old timers feel a little insecure. I've heard of some pretty weird stuff.

You keep doing what you know you need to be doing and don't worry about the weirdos, because surely this guy won't be the last.

Hopefully he'll read this thread and think about things.
