Problem with Knifemaker

when i first started to make knives i experimented with heat treating before i made my first knife and i had a few pieces of steel that look like andys. i'm not sure if the steel had the exact same pattern and i'm not saying what i did to get that pattern but it is pretty low for someone to contact your customers the way this person did.

FWIW- I think you have to heat the steel up and hammer on it to get a Js stamp. ;) :p :D Just mess'n with ya Andy, you know I dig your stuff!  :)

This is true. Its a shame there isn't an organization for grinders where they can earn status levels. Still, I'm left to judge for myself, and IMO, still an apprentice.

Before I started making, I was very quick to jump on anybody's butt. (Didn't matter if they needed it or not) I finally found something that I could really focus on. My kids tell me that I have mellowed out so much in the past few years. They just don't understand.

I know that aging takes care of a lot of daily frustrations, but by focusing on making the best knife that I can, I no longer worry about the small sh*t. Now, I only want to commit mayhem when ........... Oh, never mind....... Almost every day, but its still better than it once was.

Life is short my friend. Enjoy each moment and don't let the occasional potholes in the road of life cause a detour on your destination.

Robert

Thanks Robert. Life is definitely better as a knifemaker.

Robino. Thanks for your opinion. I'm not attacking it. I believe you bought a Bushcrafter Jr. I stopped making that model before I hit 50 knives. I am sure it is rough. I offer a free clean up, re-grind and re-mark service just for this. If you send it to me, it'll come back with an updated grind, re-shaped handle, and looking new as I can get it. I've made over 800 knives now. They have progressed a little bit. I still don't put myself up against better makers and try to seem superior, but please don't judge me by my first work.

Chin up, Andy. This kind of underhandedness almost always comes back to bite people in the ass.

Brother you got a nut case who has a bad case of penis envy complex. Meaning he ain't got the coho-nos to make his wood get stabilized. Thank you that diagnose is going for cheap today for the going rate of $250.00 pr./hr., please resume lying on the couch as we have another hour before I kick your worthless @$$ out of here and you have to pay for it!:rolleyes:

I have to look at it this way you are taking the high road when you don't give out his name. If you have more problems about the only thing you can do is go to your contacts and tell them the story. If you get all pissy you just put your self on his level. Tell your clients about the reason that this has all came about and let them make the decision as to who is right and who is wrong! I have to respect a mans decision not to share a trade secret!:D

I wanna know who! Somebody PM me!!!!

Like Ray and Lemmuhj -- I don't have a clue .
PLEASE someone PM me the link from June? ---- no need to give me a name , sounds like I'll be able to put the peices of the puzzle together easy enough.

I want to MAKE SURE that I don't buy a custom knife off a "back-stabber" who would get in touch with another makers customers and badmouth the work.

Hi all,

Andy, as others have said. Your work is very, very good. That fellow is letting his pride get in the way and it will come back to bite him.
What goes around really does come around.

Keep up the great work in your knife making.

Bryan

Instead of harassing your customers and buying new ovens, he should spend his time and money on 3D spalting lessons

I showed an interest in making some Loveless style knives and was offered assistance by the maker in question. I saw a couple of other posts that gave me a feeling that his assistance would be a waste of my time.

There are very few shortcuts in life. Keep up the good work, Andy.

Oh, I forgot to mention that NASA is interested in how you do your 3D spalting. ;) :D

Chin up, Andy. This kind of underhandedness almost always comes back to bite people in the ass.

+1 on that one.

I've never said it here before, but I've always been a firm believer that everyone gets exactly what they deserve.

morrowj_98 said "I guess you didn't start reading on page 1 of 2. Look at post #9."

The question was, what is it, not what does it look like.

The answer is " steel with a finish " Do I win ? :D

LRB is the go to guy for a really nice antique finish IMHO . Andy's is very interesting .

Next time, just tell me your secrets and I won't have to resort to this.

Ha!

You want I should make him regret his current course of action? Lemme know.

Rick

Andy,
My table was close to yours at BLADE. I was the other guy with the give away bandaids. I am certainly no one to judge, but I was impressed by your set-up, your work (first time I had seen it in person) and the way you and the rest of your crew treated your customers. You seem to be providing excellent knives (better than you give yourself credit for) and have developed a very loyal and growing following. It seems to me that you are doing it all right. I don't know who the other person is and it is not worth my while to go back thru the previous thread and figure it out. I would say just keep doing what you are doing. It seems to worry him for some reason and everyone else seems to love it and really appreiates your efforts and attitude.
Just my opinion,
Kevin

My 9yr old daughter is getting into knifemaking. She also has a proprietary finish she refers to as "Burl L6"...

I applaud you taking the high road and not outing this individual (note I did not say "man") on the forum board. As my father used to say "Always be a class act." Your work appears to be excellent from what I have observed although I don't own any of your knives...yet. I've witnessed this kind of backstabbing pissyness in the corporate environment and it typically comes from an insecure and envious person. Ignore him unless he does create problems with your customer base then I would take it to the powers that be at BF so they can deal with him appropriately.

Rick thinks he is being nutty, but he has it right. There is no such thing as spalted steel. Fungus spores won't rot steel like it does wood, obviously. Its just a name that I call my blade finish. But just so no one is confused as to whether it just looks like a piece of overheated steel...

There is no such thing as burl micarta either. But it looks kinda close, and it sounds cool.

That's crazy. Does he drink and post, do you suppose? While I appreciate Marchand for telling me generally how he does his etch, I realize now that gun blue/bleach etching is a "tool in the toolbox" for knowledgable makers - and I've since passed the info along to anybody that asked about it after seeing one of my few knives. Whatever it is you are doing, Andy, may someday be just as familiar - but for now it is unique to your knives and obviously a controlled custom process. I believe that is worth protecting, much like companies in any other industry will protect or patent a process or tech that is their own design or intellectual property. Tell him to check back in 10 years when the patent runs out! :) Maybe if you were making as a hobby, you might feel free to spread around a fun new process....but kids can't eat emails from other makers thanking you for the neat idea, even if you print them out! If you want 3D Spalted (and I do, dear sweet Baby Jesus, I do!) you gotta buy Fiddleback. I think it's fine, and my attitude toward the other fella just went from indifferent to embarrassment.

As for the big picture...I'm don't know what you can really do about him spamming your customers...but surely he will recognize that he's hurting only himself. You aren't even competing for the same market, since your styles are different. There's an old saying, found in a Book, "A soft answer turns away wrath." REALLY hard to do sometimes..
