Problem with Knifemaker

How did you guys figure out who it is? I wanna know too but I'm no good at figuring things out!

I agree with what has already been said and I figured out who it is too.

I will say this Andy, I would buy a knife from you ten times over before buying one of his. Even before finding out he pulled this crap. You are a top notch, cutting edge maker in my book and an inspiration to many wannabe knife makers, myself included. I guarantee he is only doing it because he is jealous of many things.

Boy was I surprised when I went back in your posts to the middle of June. I have seen his work and wanted to pick up one of his Loveless designs but now that is very questionable. I meet you at Blade and own your personal blade that you opened bottles with in the shop and have to say very solid blade. Very sorry to hear this because you have talent and don't need this stuff in your world. Keep up the good work and become a duck and let this run off your back, the knife community has your back.

I don't know who the fellow in question is, and I'm not sure I want to know. But I do know that my already high esteem for Andy and his work has only increased.

wow! i was shocked when i found out. his knives have such class......too bad he.......

and agreed with everyone! your knives have always been on my lovely list!

The 3D spalted steel looks like a finish that Marv Palmer used to use before he started working in Damascus steel.

Wow! Andy that really sucks. Sorry to hear about this unnecessary thorn in your side buddy :( Amazingly bad behavior from one of the few poor sports in this industry.

Talk to you soon, brother

andy, if you demand satisfaction I will gladly stand as you second be it blades or pistols, other wise success is the best revenge

so , he pissed you off and you pissed him off and now you are in a cat fight . But contacting your customers , way out of line . If it is who I think it may be and you are reading this , I just lost ALL respect for you .

I have a knifemaker contacting my customers when he sees them buy a knife in the exchange and derride them for buying my knives. It is infuriating, and I feel helpless to stop it since it is all being done privately.

I was gonna stay out of this gossip thread, but my conscience won't let me, it strikes me as odd what you're saying here, I bought a couple knives from him recently, and when i asked about a small bushy, he referred me to your website. You didn't have any in stock and i ended up buying a slightly used mini bushcraft Fiddleback on ebay.
I'll refrain from giving my opinion on the quality of the knife for the price I paid (about a hundred less than what retail price is) but i'll agree with you on your own comment "the maker in question is one that I consider to be above my skill level".

One of my customers sent me a copy of his message. Have you guys ever experienced this? What I find ironic is that the maker in question is one that I consider to be above my skill level (most everyone is).

While i'm not questioning your claim, it doesn't make sense that he would 'bad mouth you' to your clients, when he referred me to your website and this was pretty recent, about a month ago. Check your emails you'll see I wrote you a couple times asking about specific models you sell (zremy007@yahoo.com)
Personally, having had knives from both makers, the quality difference is noticeable...not to mention the price difference is huge. I've seen a LOT of used Fiddlebacks f/s - it could mean that you just sell a lot of knives.

I am not one to hide my feelings or thoughts, i usually speak my mind and that tends to get people's panties in a bunch but at least I say it like it is. Maybe the guy did the same thing, you know...asked you to share a secret and when you declined he probably told you how it is, and here you are all upset.

I'm pretty new here but for a bunch of burly blacksmiths you guys are pretty damn sensitive, lol.

I'm off this thread, please no death threats, lol - i'm just an honest customer

Sensitive, because it is food on the table, and because this kind of very personal work becomes part of who they are.

I think it's good that the problem got brought up. I think it's good that you brought up another point of view. Andy isn't looking to hurt anyone but he has to wonder if someone is trying to hurt him. He works too hard to shrug that off.

I'm real interested to see what "he" says for himself I looked at a bunch of his posts including the ones referenced and don't see anything too bad. Maybe a lacking in tact? I'd hate to join in the bashing w/o evidence. I am a little confused as you guys have different market niches.

I totally remember the thread and the 3 D spalted question, looks like I may have to dig further to satisfy my own sick and twisted curiosity.. :)

Really sorry to hear this is happening to you, regardless how trivial it may seem I think its absolutely shameful and would get under anyone's skin..

to me this shows your character and I say sir you're one stand-up individual, it takes a lot to stay cool when someones slamming you like this..

take care,

The first rule about the "place which shall not be named" is............ With that said, pissing down each others leg in a quasi-private forum is one thing, but e-mailing customers and telling them what a poor buying decision they made because you are butthurt is another kettle of fish altogether. The situation has gone from dick waving to something marginally actionable.

Hello Andy...and Friends,

I have admired your work and business persona for some time now! Isn't is cool how a path that requires the honing of a discipline, such as knife making, drags one's whole soul along for the journey?! Owning your part in the initial monkey business is a case in point. I tip my hat to you for making a great step in tempering your temper! That is no small feat. I believe really learning to LIVE the golden rule is fundamental toward evolving a true humanity. I usually get it backward. It is not, treat others as they treat you. It is, treat others as you wish to be treated. It is not a simple thing to remain respectful when being disrespected. Again, my hat is off to you. I truly wish you the best of luck in finding compassionate resolution to this. It is possible a heart-to-heart communique (rather than confrontational) might clear the air. I find when I make such efforts they are always nourishing to me personally--even if they end up falling on deaf ears and stone hearts--and they often really do clear the air.

Aloha, Phil

I'm not always a class act guys. During the first incident with this fellow, I lost it. I shouldn't have let it get to me. I battle my temper. Its a weakness. Before I had knifemaking to pour passion into, it was worse.

I'm assuming Andy is talking about me.

You've got some nerve, pal. :thumbdn:

Okay, fine, I admit it. I contacted his customers because I felt they had made a mistake, and I .............. oh wait, I'm not a knifemaker........ha ha ha....:D

Okay okay, I admit it, it was me. :( :foot:

Haha! Just kidding ;)

One good thing, is the few times I've checked this thread today on coffee breaks, you've had about half the board looking at it, add to that the gracious way you handled it, and I'd say it's adding up to some more good press for 'ya buddy. :)

FWIW- I think you have to heat the steel up and hammer on it to get a Js stamp. ;) :p :D Just mess'n with ya Andy, you know I dig your stuff!  :)

No, No, we know it was not you Nick......Some where in his post Fiddleback said this guy was a better knife maker than him, so that rules you out........;) (just kidding).

I found the dude you are talking about, and I can tell you Andy, I would much rather buy one of your knives. (and of course Mr. Nick Wheeler's too!).

Geez, contacting another knifemakers customers is poor form.

Funny thing though, the guy in question does not have a problem calling others out for supposed bad behaviour. Talk about double standards...........
