Production Wegner fixed blade?

Ghecko,

You can find the Talon for about $200 and the Cetan in the same configuration would be $275 if you could get one. And rockspyder is correct. I talked with Rob and was the last on his list. BTW, the Talon has always been cheaper than the Cetan...I own both and I know. You are right though that a Talonite version of the Wegner would put it out of range of many-a-folk.

Guess it's dead, eh? I guess I'll shut up after this, then.

Like the specs that Tim has proposed, but would also like to see a Junior version.

The Junior size would be my first choice as well. Tim indicated a 4 to 4.5" blade as the "right" length for the piece. I would certainly not like to argue with Tim, as it is his knife carries his name.

If the knife is to be a purpose built big game hunter, the blade length question sort of goes away, but the knife looses a lot of it's general utility value.

To be a Utility/Hunter the blade should be no longer than 3.9" 3.95" range, as 4" seems to be a fairly common length mentioned in laws and regulations. For the knife to sell as well as possible it needs to be legal for casual carry in as many places as possible.

I just liked to give my vote as well for a Spyderco Wenger fixed blade. I'd like to see it as close to Tim's design as possible and can live with a FRN handle (Moran style). I'd buy both versions but a junior version would be used more by me.

Just to cast my vote in the size category: I'd rather have the 4.5 to 5 inch version. I'd probably buy the under 4 inch as well, but the 4+ incher would be higher on the acquisition list. FWIW

I'm in the process of acquiring a sample from Tim as Tim thinks it should be. We'll do some testing and some input gathering.

I really appreciate the time and effort all of you have put into this question. I realize that you, as an average, know more than the general ELU and your opinion is valued.

Sal,

Are you still thinking about this one?

If you are done thinking about it, what did you decide you thought about it?

Price is not an issue cause I've never paid too much for a Spyderco. Always value for money in my pocket.
Kydex or Concealex for a sheath and Tek lock of course.
Micarta with inlaid rubber sounds great but then so does just micarta scales. I'd like the scales to be removable for cleaning or replacement etc.
Of course we'd take a few downunder.

Sal has a custom sample of Weg/fixed blade as we speak. I'm sure when he gets done working with it, he will take a minute out of his hectic schedule to post a reply as to when this project might be put on thier busy production list for the future manufacture.
Thanks!
Tim

Outstanding idea. Just read this thread, guess I'm a bit slow. My vote for length: 4 1/2 to 5". 4 3/4 is my ideal, but Wegner's is 4 1/2. Even I wouldn't quibble much about the 1/4.
One note about the 4"... a lot of people on the net seem to think that fixed blades under 4" are "legal" and over are not "legal" in a lot of places. A lot of the impetus (not all, of course) for little fixed blades seems to come from this notion. Ain't necessarily so.
In my home state (Kansas) and I suspect, many other 4" states, it's legal to carry an ordinary (non-auto)sub-4" FOLDER in your pocket or otherwise concealed without running afoul of the concealed weapons statute. And you can carry as big a blade as you please as long as it's open carry. Sure, some folks may look at you funny unless you're hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, etc...but you are legal.
Micarta...nice stuff but not worth an extra 40% to me. I'd be using the bejeebers out of this blade, don't need to be fancy.
Thanks. Ed

Ed has a point... there are so many variations of knife laws that it is hard to say that under X" or over X" is legal or illegal for a majority/minority of the areas of the country. Much less the world. And so many places do not care so much about length as they do about type. Here in MD, to the best of my knowledge, a 2 inch fixed blade is as illegal as a 7 inch fixed blade, just easier to get away with. Meanwhile, is appears that as long as it folds, it is legal. So, I carry what I want.... same as any other tool. Well, I rarely carry a chainsaw, since that really raises some eyebrows... especially in the post office...
