Promoting knives to art collectors

JD -- do you mind giving the name of the maker?

Has he attended or plans to attend any of the Bladesmithing schools related to the ABS? Will he attempt to work his way thru ABS via JS and MS?

Does he have a website with examples of his work and knives for sale?

Perhaps he can be encouraged to come to this forum and perhaps become a member of the CKCA.

sorry to hear you are not attending shows as I'm sure many collectors would love to see your current work.

Murray,
Indeed Paul Cooper is one of my best proteges, but not the one one I refered to in my post. The young man's name is Andrew Meers and he is just coming around to the idea of joining and advancing through the ABS, only after YEARS of coaxing on my part! As to seeing my new work; I regularly post it on the various forums. For me, Shows just don't work as an earning proposition. Too much money out before a single dime is taken in. I'd rather work with a small group of dealers and gallery curators. I've worked out very advantageous arrangements with them. And every piece I make sells and sells quickly.

Fashion with function. Sounds great to me. Bently, Mercedes, Caddilac, Holland and Holland Shotguns, Purdey Rifles, and Leer jets.

We need more "potato peelers".

By the way, Josh, I am on my Leer Jet, RIGHT NOW - getting served hand and foot! Going to England or France, haven't decided first yet, for "holiday".

In the meantime i collect art. ( let the rest of You guys eat cake. )

Sounds great. I'm sitting by the fire in Montana actually eating cake. This really is the life.

Stawberry, extra whip cream and a David Darom great collections book. Again that's cake, hot cup of coffee, hot fire in the stove, Sunday night football, three sleeping children, and a Darom book.

Who needs money? :D

Hello Josh,

Thanks for the compliments.... It is my vision coming true....

I do the same with one of my books every evening too.
The only differences are that down here we don't have fire-places
and our youngest boy is 33 yrs old with 1.5 children of his own...

Wait till you see my next two productions..... You will find it difficult
to choose, maybe a different volume for every kind of cake?

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Plane crashed, into the Eiffel Tower, then hopped on a flight home, it went down over the Atlantic, swam w/ one arm- keeping cell ph. dry, to uninhabited island. No cake. Lots of birds.

-I couldn't resist. If i was rich, I'd buy David Darom's books too. ;)
David

Sorry guys if I too contributed something to the
side stepping of this thread....

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Just one question. When you talk of art knives why is C Gray Taylor left off most of your list? I have followed his work for sometime and if it is not art some of those mentioned should be left off the list. Confused!!

I'm confused too  Is there a list of "art knife" makers in this thread?

I didn't see one. From what I saw on his site, Mr. Taylor makes art knives with a bit of tasteful "bling" and they still look like functional knives. Those are one good example of what I was thinking the "art collector" might like.

I guess he's talking about the 4 or 5 makers I said I thought made blades that are good examples of "art".... looking at Mr. Taylor's site he makes beautiful "art knives".

It would be a very long list indeed if we were to try to include all the guys and gals that are making knives that would possibly appeal to art collectors.

Very true. And a good many of them would NOT be what the average knife knut considers to be a maker of "art knives" I suspect.

true indeed. I dont think Fisk makes "art" knives

It all depends on a person's definition of what art is when it comes to custom knives.

So, What is the difference between "A work of Art" and a "Art Knife"?
I have many knives in my collection that I consider to be works of art, but I am not sure that "Art Collectors" would be interested.

There you go thinking again. ;):p:)

Jerry has actually been making what most consider "art knives" for some time.
He's currently working on a beautiful sword (the damascus blade that I have seen anyway) where he will travel to Europe to create a Crystal Handle at the Swarovski factory. I understand the collector will pay around $35,000 for it when finished.

Here's some previous examples of pieces myself and other may consider Fisk "art knives":
