OK, Before the 303 idea goes off too much let me discuss it a little.
When the BCCI 301 project started BCCI VP Larry Oden (who serves as a Buck sales representative to the club) was talking to Buck HQ about special knives for BCCI. It was mentioned they had a "small amount" of BG 42 they could make a few knives with for the club.
Larry proposed the possibility of a 300 style folder and they had no issue with that. Larry then talked to me a few times about it and it was discussed at a meeting. At first we discussed a set of 301/303 made the same. But on investigation the amount of steel available would limit any issue to 200 knives or 100 sets. So, discussion was then would it be better to get 200 of one than just 100 sets. We all felt 200 was the deal so every BCCI person who wanted one would get one. So in the end we had to vote to get 200 knives we had to just call for 303 or 301 size. The discussions seemed to lead to the conclusion that the 301 would have the most universal appeal to club members. So 200 301s in BG 42 were talked with to Buck. If results of this sale is a representative of our decision then it fell half way inbetween both, as about 150 sold since we offered them in March with 50 or so bringing up the rear.
Thats how you got to where we are today. I will investigate what the potential of the whats and whens of a future issue of a special 303 and how it might work. I would strongly guess that BG 42 would not be a part of that but we can see. You can write me if you wish to discuss it. See, what I was hoping for is that we would sell out of the 301s so fast and the outcry for more be so large, that Buck would consider issuing there own special run, in the catalog, of a special 303. Likely it would be s30v but I could live with that. But, alas the fast and furious purchasing did not occur and if you can't sell a ninty dollar folding pocket knife to collectors the general public will likely not be interested. I will state that the BCCI will have their ears open to members and you other 300 Vikings will help me to always be a promoter of a nice 303. PS If we can't get one that is a copy for a set I then lean toward very nice jigged bone, you know the kind like old Schrades and Old Timers sort of lighter in color on the ends.
See, if the world was perfect we would have to make the decision of how many 303s in plain, etched and etched on back to order....ha.
I will keep you 303 people posted if new possibilities arise.
