Proposed customized BK14

Hey Dex, Thanks my friend. Feel free to use any custom feature I do to a knife for your own work. You do my work honor.

How the crap do you do it?! I can never polish like that. Not trying to rush you but MORE MORE MORE MORE

So far, the metal work was relatively easy. My goal for this knife was to make a small, last ditch, survival/fighter. With that in mind, I decided to keep the black coating and recoat the remodeled portions. I have different thicknesses of black micarta for the scales.

I hope I dont piss everybody off by offering a little constructive criticism, but I have one major concern with this one. First off, let me say that I love Hawkheads projects. The thought and the level of craftsmanship he puts in his projects is inspiring to me and several of you I'm sure so let it be known that I mean no disrespect, but, The area where the finger gaurd has been ground forward is a major saftey threat to your index finger if the knife should slip in your hand. There is nothing to protect your piggy from that sharp edge. I understand that this was necessary to make the handles bigger which is a common complaint for this knife, but cutting that finger gaurd that far forward is asking for trouble as far as I'm concerned. Granted, it is one of the most handsome 14's I've seen, but if it cost me a finger injury it wouldnt be worth it.

Not a big Mora fan, I take it... you're not gonna like my full axial taper knives one bit, either ;)

It's a valid point, for certain. If you're going to make knives with no guard, you really have to remember to use them with a bit of extra care. They're definitely not for stabbing things.

I've always loved and admired the simplicity of the design of the Mora's but yes James your right. that very aspect has kept me from ever purchasing or using one.

Check out the new ESEE. It's very similar. I think once he puts the scale on it will be fine.

Hi Todd and James,
I for one am always glad to receive any criticism. When men of your ability are willing to teach me something, rest assured, I am listening and grateful for the help. In the world of knives, pretty doesn't always cut it. I have been going over my old drawings of my own designs to rethink form, function, proportion and balance.

That portion of the blade is dangerous as is the pointed edge of the ricasso. I have been rethinking that portion of the blade and there is a small radius incorporated to minimize injury. It is visible in the profile picture with the blue background. It may need to be a larger radius. I will see when I fit the scales. The pointed portion of the ricasso needs a radius in two planes, along the height and length. The Esee knife Dex pictured avoids the ricasso problem by having the gradual radius to the plunge cut. The BK14 is a 90 degree plunge which leaves a sharp corner.
Thanks again for the extra eyes on the project.
It just goes to illustrate that customizing another design brings on new problems.

Hawkhesd...i suspect you being from an other world...i ve been watching your threads and man,you have a vision! As a "designer" of some sort myself i only can enjoy your post and your work... Please keep posting,it's good for my soul

This is incredible. As someone who could never dream of accomplishing something like this, I just have to say: well done! Very beautiful so far. Look forward to seeing the finished product.

Thank you everyone for the comment and critiques. I rough cut the micarta for the scales and have not proceeded beyond that. Due to my ongoing physical issues and a death in my family, right now mutual family support is the priority. Will be producing soon.

Totally understandable Hawkhead. Sorry to hear about the loss in the family. How is the shoulder doing? Is it healing?

Sorry to hear of your loss Hawkhead. Smoke and Prayers headed your way.
Godspeed on your recovery.
